ANÁLISIS: CAUSA ROMERO CON CELERIDAD MODERADA

El estudio del progreso de la causa de beatificación de Mons. Romero publicado en este blog nos hace pensar que la idea de una obstrucción al proceso es una impresión falsa: 97.5% de los procesos de canonización iniciados desde 1980 no han culminado, solo el 1.5% de las beatificaciones del Papa Benedicto han sido casos posteriores al año 80 y la duración promedia de estos procesos ha sido de 94.30 años—una espera tres veces más larga de lo que hemos esperado en el caso Romero. Más esperó el Papa Juan XXIII para ser beatificado, a pesar de la pretensión de varios cardenales de beatificarlo por “aclamación” al final del Concilio Vaticano II. En el análisis que publicamos aquí, analizamos casos abiertos desde el 80, las canonizaciones y beatificaciones completadas por el papa actual, y cinco casos sobresalientes.

Si bien el caso de Mons. Romero es insólito, no es del todo inédito. Los seguidores de Mons. Romero son los primeros en recordar que el ejemplo más parecido es el del mismo Jesucristo: de un magnicidio producido por motivos de índole religioso o teológico, mezclado con motivaciones netamente políticas. Pero, para traer el asunto al ámbito humano, de los mortales, debemos hablar de un martirio que se da dentro de una convulsión política, en medio de la “neblina de la guerra”. Y estos casos no son raros. Tenemos tres grandes ejemplos de la historia reciente: 1. los mártires “cristeros” de México (de los 1920s), 2. los mártires de la guerra civil de España (de los 1930s), y 3. los mártires del fascismo de la II Guerra Mundial (de los 1940s). Las víctimas de los nazis fueron beatificados en promedios de 45 años, los españoles en 50 años y los cristeros en 60 años. En cada uno de estos casos, fue necesario que las autoridades eclesiales estudiaran los entornos históricos de estas situaciones para poder discernir las vicisitudes políticas del momento y luego poderlas separar de las actuaciones cristianas de los mártires, y anti-cristianas de sus perseguidores. Ha sido necesario contar con expertos historiadores que elaboren informes y que estos pasen por un proceso de escrutinio pericial antes de ser aceptados al expediente y ser tomados en cuenta por teólogos que opinan sobre los aspectos religiosos del caso. Esto es lo que está sucediendo con el caso Romero.

Uno de los puntos más contundentes del estudio surge de la comparación del caso Romero a los procesos del Beato Juan Pablo II, la Beata Madre Teresa, San Josemaría Escrivá, San Pío de Pietrelcina, y el Beato Juan XXIII. Lo que vale la pena resaltar es la celeridad con cual el caso Romero arrancó en su inicio—cuando muchos aseveran que hubo bloqueo o desinterés del Vaticano de admitir su beatificación. En realidad, el tiempo que corrió desde la muerte de Mons. Romero hasta el decreto Vaticano aceptando el informe de la investigación diocesana sobre su martirio—17 años—se compara favorablemente con los otros casos. Por ejemplo, el caso del estigmatizado Padre Pío corrió esa misma trayectoria en 22 años, un plazo que supera la extensión de tiempo en el caso Romero. Otro ejemplo: en la causa del Papa Juan XXIII, ese tramo duró 25 años—¡más todavía! La pronta aceptación del caso Romero es aún más impresionante teniendo en cuenta el contexto histórico del suceso. En 1992 se pactó el final de la guerra civil salvadoreña. En marzo del 93 se publicó el informe de la Comisión de la Verdad de la ONU, responsabilizando a Roberto D’Aubuisson por la autoría intelectual del crimen y en septiembre del mismo año el Vaticano otorgó el «Nihil Obstat» autorizando la incepción de la causa. La investigación diocesana en el caso Romero se hizo a la velocidad de la luz. El proceso local duró un poco más de dos años y medio (compárese cinco años y medio para San Josemaría Escrivá, siete años para el Padre Pío y siete años para Juan XXIII). Desde todo esto podemos desprender sin lugar a duda que el caso de Mons. Romero despegó como rayo al empezar.

Con este discernimiento podemos apreciar que es en la segunda fase—en la investigación romana—donde la causa de Mons. Romero ha encontrado una demora apreciable. La siguiente tabla ilustra esto. En este cuadro se nota que la primera fase del caso Romero fue apreciablemente más corta que algunos de los otros casos que han concluido con más celeridad (el azul); mientras que la fase romana en el caso Romero ha sido hasta la fecha un poco más larga que la más larga de las demás (en rojo).

El análisis practicado no nos dice cuánto durará el proceso, pero de sus lineamientos se desprende que la trayectoria que lleva hasta la fecha está dentro de lo normal para casos “fast track” que se han extendido hasta entre 31 (Padre Pío) y 37 (Juan XXIII) años, y de los mártires de los conflictos históricos del siglo XX cuyos procesos han durado hasta medio siglo antes de ser beatificados.

ROMERO, A PILGRIM’S PROGRESS*

Neither progressives who complain that Archbishop Romero’s canonization cause has moved too slowly—or not at all—nor traditionalists who respond that these things take hundreds and hundreds of years are entirely confirmed in their views by a study of the Vatican’s beatification files. An analysis of the causes of saints submitted 1980 and thereafter, as well as an assessment of the beatifications and canonizations under Pope Benedict’s pontificate and a targeted review of five high-profile causes, show that Archbishop Romero’s cause has progressed substantially ahead of most others, but lags behind a privileged group of candidates for the sainthood.

I. INTAKE

The study examined and cross-referenced information available online from the Congregation for the Causes of Saints (CCS) and the Index ac Status Causarum, as reflected in the Hagiography Circle and Giga-Catholic Information web sites, to glean the broadest possible window into the internal workings of the Church’s “saint making” function. The analysis identified 372 canonization causes for would-be saints who died 1980 and after—including, Archbishop Romero. Among those proposed candidates for the sainthood, the great majority have not advanced as far as Archbishop Romero’s cause, which has completed the first phase of study in the local church and been passed on to Rome for final examination. 262 of the causes started since 1980 have not yet moved to the second, Vatican phase of the process, according to the information. Only 72 of these causes have received a Vatican decree certifying the validity of the Phase I inquiry. Archbishop Romero’s is one of them. The number of causes that has gone on to the next step after that is even smaller: only 38 of the 372—just about 10% of them—have had a Positio or final report accepted by the CCS in Rome. And a rather miniscule selection—ten causes, representing about 2.5% of the causes submitted since 1980—have gone on to the beatification of the candidate proposed for the sainthood. (See, Fig. 1.)

Archbishop Romero places in the top 30th percentile of the causes started since 1980, in terms of the level of advancement achieved within the bureaucratic and legal process by which the Church names its saints. This is hardly evidence of “foot dragging” or of a “blocked” path to the sainthood, as some characterize it. But the fact that 10 people who have died after Ab. Romero have been beatified ahead of Ab. Romero certainly suggests that his cause has not advanced at the highest rate of progress of which the CCS is capable. The faster progress by other candidates raises eyebrows because Ab. Romero is proposed as a martyr, a type of beatification process designed to be shorter and swifter (requiring no miracle for beatification). None of the ten candidates who were beatified ahead Ab. Romero were martyrs. For example, Blessed Chiara Badano, who died in 1990 at age 18, was beatified by Pope Benedict on September 25, 2010. María Isabel Salvat Romero, who died in 1998, was beatified a few days earlier, on September 18, 2010. But these cases are anomalous and, as noted earlier, represent 2.5% of these causes. More typical is the case of Cosme Spezzotto, killed in 1980 in El Salvador, still pending acceptance of the Positio, or Dorothy Day, who also died 1980 and is still awaiting her Phase I investigation.

II. OUTPUT

Looking at the causes submitted after 1980 allows us to look at the intake side of the sainthood “pipeline,” but another useful perspective is the output end of the process, for which we look to the canonizations and beatifications approved during the last seven years—Pope Benedict XVI’s pontificate, to date. The current pope has approved 839 beatifications and, as noted above, 10 of those were candidates who died after Ab. Romero. Stated mathematically, beatifications of candidates who died after Ab. Romero represent 1.2% of the blesseds approved under the current pontificate. Therefore the percentage of beatifications who “cut ahead” of Romero is small. While it has been 31+ years since Ab. Romero was killed, the 839 persons beatified by Pope Benedict had to wait an average of 94.3 years for their turn. (See, Fig. 2.) But one dramatic disparity in these results is the disproportionate number of Europeans canonized and beatified under Pope Benedict (118) versus the Latin Americans (19).

Some blesseds beatified by Benedict had inordinately long waits: Bb. Petrus Kibe Kasui and his 187 martyred companions from Japan had to wait 369 years before being recognized as “blesseds.” Spain’s Bd. Juan de Palafox Mendoza was beatified after 351 years. It was 306 years for Bd. Stanislaw Papczynski of Poland. But the notion that beatifications take hundreds and hundreds of years to process is the exception rather than the rule. Besides, the long drawn-out cases are cancelled out by the fast-track prodigies: Bd. Lindalva Justo de Oliveira was beatified 2007, in fifteen years; Bd. María de la Purísima Salvat Romero was beatified 2010, in eleven years; and—of course—Bd. John Paul II was beatified 2011, in just six years. The truly lengthy processes were not beatifications (the first step in the path to sainthood), but canonizations (the final step). St. Bernardo Tolomei was canonized by Pope Benedict in 2009, after 660 years. Under that standard, we would not expect to see Ab. Romero canonized until the year 2640!

III. “SUPERSAINTS”

Finally, after looking at the intake end and the output end of the canonization process, it is useful to look at the in-between, and for that purpose, we examine five exemplary cases: (1) Pope John Paul II, (2) Mother Theresa, (3) Opus Dei founder Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer, (4) popular stigmatist Padre Pio and (5) Pope John XXIII. All have been beatified; and nos. 3 & 4 have completed the process in its entirety, having been declared saints of the Universal Church. Fig. 3 below tracks the amount of time each cause took to move through various steps of the process, compared to Ab. Romero, and the chart shows that Romero actually out-performed all of these “fast-track” saints during the Phase I investigation, taking merely 1 year to complete this early part of the process (compare 6 years for Msgr. Escrivá and 8 years for Padre Pio). The chart also shows that Ab. Romero encountered delay in the Roman phase (everything from Positio). It is in comparison to the superstars that Ab. Romero’s disadvantage is revealed: each of them was beatified in an average 19.4 years, while Ab. Romero is going on 32 years, still awaiting beatification.

In sum, all three measures demonstrate that Ab. Romero’s process does not reflect the same kind of celerity as the topper-most performers among the newly minted saints and blesseds. However, looking at the new causes introduced in the time of Romero, as well as the causes completed under the current pontificate, we see that Romero has moved along faster than the great majority of them. A targeted review of “super-saints” also reveals that, at specific moments in the process—especially at the starting gate—Romero’s progress was even better than the other superstars. One hopes that this kind of celerity will return when the current impasse is cleared.

LA HISTORIA DE RUTILIO GRANDE

Este año marca el 35° aniversario del martirio del Padre Rutilio Grande, amigo entrañable de Mons. Romero, cuyo asesinato marcó el camino del arzobispo, quien posteriormente se comprometió de manera decisiva con la causa de los pobres y los oprimidos. Algunos hasta han supuesto que el padre Rutilio era como un seña que nos ayuda a ubicar a Mons. Romero con relación a Cristo—el padre Tilo era un “Juan el Bautista,” cuyas denuncias serían mal entendidas, pero cuya muerte nos señalaría la llegada de un profeta aún mayor a este.

Su mensaje más recordado es el “Sermón de Apopa”. He aquí unos fragmentos:

Mucho me temo, mis queridos hermanos y amigos, que muy pronto la Biblia y el Evangelio no podrán entrar por nuestras fronteras. Nos llegarán las pastas nada más, porque todas sus páginas son subversivas. ¡Subversivas contra el pecado, naturalmente! Me llama la atención la avalancha de sectas importadas y de slogans de libertad de culto, en este contexto, que se andan pregronando por allí. ¡Libertad de culto, libertad de culto! ¡Libertad de culto para que nos traigan un dios falso! Libertad de culto para que nos traigan un dios que está en las nubes, sentado en una hamaca. Libertad de culto para que nos presenten a un Cristo que no es el verdadero Cristo. ¡Es falso y es grave!

Mucho me temo, hermanos, que si Jesús de Nazaret volviera, como en aquel tiempo, bajando de Galilea a Judea, es decir desde Chalatenango a San Salvador, yo me atrevo a decir que no llegaría con sus prédicas y acciones, en este momento, hasta Apopa .... Allí por Apopa lo detendrían. Quién sabe si llegara a Apopa, ¿verdad? Mejor dicho, por Guazapa, ¡duro con él! Se lo llevarían a muchas Juntas Supremas por incostitucional y subversivo. Al hombre-Dios, al prototipo de hombre, lo acusarían de revoltoso, de judío extranjero, de enredador con ideas exóticas y extrañas, contrarias a la ‘democracia’, es decir, contrarias a la minoría .... Sin duda, hermanos, lo volverían a crucificar.

ARCHBISHOP ROMERO & THE NEOCATECHUMENAL WAY

In November of 1979, as the political situation in El Salvador deteriorated dramatically after an ill fated military coup d’état, Archbishop Romero retreated to a spiritual center in the hills above San Salvador with followers of the Neocatechumenal Way, a Church movement started in Spain in 1964, focusing on adult Christian formation, which has been promoted as a path for wayward Catholics to return to the Church, but which has been controversial because of its nonconventional celebrations—particularly, its Saturday night communal Masses in which adherents sit around a banquet style table and share unleavened bread (not the wheaten Host), and take turns expounding on the Gospel. In January 2012, Pope Benedict XVI definitively endorsed the movement, delivering three key messages to its adherents:

“The Church has recognized in the Neocatechumenal Way a particular gift aroused by the Holy Spirit.”
The Neocatechumenal Way should “contribute, with new impetus and ardor, to the radical and joyful rediscovery of the gift of baptism and to offer your original contribution to the cause of the New Evangelization.”
The Neocatechumenal Way should “seek always a profound communion with the pastors and with all the components of the particular Churches and the very different ecclesial contexts in which you are called to operate.”

Benedict’s themes correspond dramatically with the message Romero gave the Neocatechumenal communities of San Salvador and Santiago de María three decades earlier. Like the Pope, Romero recognized the movement as an expression of the Holy Spirit, saying, “I am happy that in our country, but more specifically in these two dioceses, the movement of the Holy Spirit is flourishing.” (November 22, 1979 Sermon.) Romero also recognized “The Way” as “an institution that is intimately linked to our evangelization” (Pope Benedict, in fact, announced several new evangelization projects entrusted to the movement), and which nourishes the sacrament of Baptism: “For so many people the sacrament of Baptism is nothing more than a social ceremony in which godparents have to be found and a fiesta prepared, but so few are aware of the fact that Baptism signifies the incorporation of their child into the life of Christ, into the death and resurrection of Christ.” (Romero’s Sermon, ibid.)

Importantly, Romero, like the Pope, also encouraged the followers of The Way, not to be a separate, insular institution, but to steer catechumens (i.e., the baptized) back to the sacramental and community life of the Church. “I assure you and with all my heart I ask you as Pastor,” Romero said, “there wherever you go, in whatever parishes you are living, please be concerned about making the catechumenate a part of the Christian life of the people of that area.” He went on, “This catechumenate should consist of Biblical reflection, a sense of the sacraments, a Christian commitment to build community, but not a community that is closed in upon itself or comfortable with its own life,” he warned, “but rather a community that is Church and that leads people to Jesus Christ.” He concluded, “A catechumenate should never be far from the sacramental life, from that encounter with Christ in the Eucharist or Reconciliation or from all of the other holy sacraments.”

As his Church found itself in an hour of crisis, followers of the The Way, Romero suggested, should join in solidarity with the situation of the church, and be with that Church, “a community that exists to serve the world, a community that enlightens itself with the light of Christ in order to share this same light with the surrounding community, a community that is each day more committed to Christ, more committed to the redemption of Christ that becomes present in the midst of people and the world.”

In this sense, Romero reflected, the Way, which harkens back to the worship of the early Church, provided an important infusion and renewal to a Church seeking to be more authentic and radical in its commitment. “The Church,” he said, “must continue to be faithful to the apostles who spoke about carrying this treasure in fragile vessels and extending this treasure through creating new communities and by living together in community.”

PLAZA ROMERO EN LOS ÁNGELES

El concejo municipal de Los Ángeles aprobó nombrar una intersección de un vecindario mayoritariamente centroamericano de esa ciudad en honor a Mons. Romero, según reportaron los periódicos angelinos L.A. TIMES y LA OPINIÓN. La esquina de South Vermont Avenue y West Pico Boulevard, dos calles principales del sector informalmente conocido como la “Pequeña América Central” ahora será llamada “Plaza Mons. Óscar A. Romero” (foto de Google EarthView).

El concejal Ed Reyes, quien presentó la propuesta de nombrar la plaza en honor a Mons. Romero le dijo al L.A. TIMES que, “Esta es una manera de reforzar la historia y celebrarlo a él, dada su estatura heroica en su país y en la comunidad”. La nota en LA OPINIÓN señala que el consejo aprobó la propuesta, “Con una votación unánime”, y que “Una escuela intermedia de Los Ángeles en esa zona ya lleva su nombre”. El L.A. TIMES agregó que, “Una clínica de la zona también lleva su nombre”. En años recientes, el concejo angelino ha aprobado el reconocimiento del 24 de marzo como un día para conmemorar a Mons. Romero.

En El Salvador, el nombramiento de la plaza hizo noticia en los medios locales. Mientras tanto, el recuerdo de Mons. Romero estuvo en las palabras de la premio nobel por la paz 1992 Rigoberta Menchú, de Guatemala, de visita en el país. Según una nota de prensa, “Menchú aseguró que los años de guerra han dejado duras lecciones al país, como el dolor, y resaltó la figura de monseñor Óscar Arnulfo Romero, asesinado durante el conflicto armado en El Salvador”.

The scene was Policlínica Salvadoreña on Monday, March 24, 1980. While a “pieta” in Western art is a reverent scene of the soon-to-be-resurrected Christ, attended by the Virgin or by holy women and angels, in martyrdom of the 20th century, the reality is grittier. Archbishop Romero is surrounded by mourners, journalists and on-lookers.

In this clip, the young doctor on duty at Policlínica matter-of-factly answers a journalist’s questions and sets forth the base facts of the raw reality that night. (Super Martyrio Translation.)

And see, Mgr. Romero came in with a bullet wound—fatal, you know? Lodged in the left, fourth interspace of the thorax. It penetrated into his heart and that was the cause of death.

Was he alive when he arrived at the hospital?

No. No. Um, we did everything that humanly could be done—medically—but Monsignor arrived, well, dead, almost, one might say, you see. But all that was done—medically, the correct things were done—but nevertheless he could not recover.

«SE COMPROMETIÓ EN FAVOR DE LA PAZ»

Aunque Mons. Romero no vivió los tiempos de los Acuerdos de Paz de El Salvador, sí está muy ligado con el proceso de la paz: se dice que su asesinato el 24 de marzo de 1980 hizo estallar la guerra civil salvadoreña, y de manera simbólica al declararse la paz, el pueblo se aglutinó masivamente enfrente de la Catedral Metropolitana de San Salvador adornada con la imagen de Romero (foto). Como que si la ausencia de Mons. Romero—desde su asesinato hasta su reaparición en aquel estandarte en Catedral—coincidía con la ausencia de la paz. De hecho, Mons. Romero—en las palabras del Papa Benedicto XVI—“se comprometió en favor de la paz” (Conferencia de prensa, 7 de mayo del 2007).

La paz salvadoreña encontrada aquel enero de 1992 nos hace pensar la exhortación de Mons. Romero en enero de 1980, el domingo de la Epifanía: “ábranle el campo a Jesucristo, dejen que entre el Rey de la Paz, sometan ante él, con la humildad de los magos, el corazón humilde buscándolo, y encontraremos de verdad la solución de nuestro país”. (Homilía del 6 de enero de 1980.) Pero seguramente, las palabras más alusivas de Mons. Romero por la paz se habían dado el Domingo de la Epifanía de 1978, cuando dijo que:

la paz no es el producto del terror ni del miedo, la paz no es el silencio de los cementerios, la paz no es producto de una violencia y de una represión que calla. La Paz es la aportación generosa, tranquila, de todos para el bien de todos; la paz es dinamismo, la paz es generosidad, es derecho y es deber en que cada uno se sienta en su puesto en esta hermosa familia que la Epifanía nos ilumina con la luz de Dios.

Mons. Romero predicó la paz, y sobre todas las calumnias de la derecha y las tergiversaciones de la izquierda se deben imponer los tres extremos de la formula que Mons. Romero nos dejó para lograr la paz:

En primer lugar, Mons. Romero rechazó la violencia: “La violencia no es cristiana, la violencia no es humana, nada violento puede durar ... No es contestando violentamente a la violencia como se va a arreglar la paz del mundo”. (Hom. 11 de mayo 1977.)

En segundo lugar, Mons. Romero rechazó el odio y el rencor, haciendo “un llamamiento a la reconciliación con Dios y con los hermanos [que] nos deje en todos los corazones la satisfacción de que somos cristianos y que no quedan huellas de odio y de rencor en el alma. Que seremos firmes sí en defender nuestros derechos, pero con un gran amor en el corazón.” (Hom. 19 de junio 1977.)

Y en tercer lugar, Mons. Romero insistió en hacer justicia, precisamente porque es el cimiento más seguro sobre cual se puede establecer la paz: “Sólo la justicia puede ser la raíz de la paz”. (Hom. 27 de agosto 1978.)

Muchos se han preguntado qué diría Mons. Romero sobre una situación u otra, incluyendo las vicisitudes de la vida política de El Salvador, ya sea la situación social en general, o alguna parte de esta, incluyendo los altos niveles de violencia en la actualidad. No nos gusta especular o sacar a Mons. Romero de su cauce histórico para desplazarlo a nuestro capricho para pretender que se pronuncia sobre una realidad que no fue la que él vivió, pero sí dijo algunas palabras cuya relevancia parece ser aplicable a primera cara. “La paz no es ausencia de guerra”, advirtió: “Tampoco es paz el equilibrio de dos fuerzas adversas”—como quien dice ARENA y el FMLN. (Hom. 3 de julio 1977.) Sólo hay paz, “cuando todos los hombres pueden disfrutar sus derechos legítimos, cuando hay libertad, cuando no hay miedo, cuando no hay pueblos sofocados por las armas”, y en El Salvador se puede argumentar que esas condiciones no existen cuando la ciudadanía no ejerce la plenitud de sus derechos porque vive sofocada por miedo a la delincuencia y las armas de la criminalidad.

Pero no es necesario del todo especular, porque Mons. Romero habló sobre el futuro—lo que ahora es el presente de nuestra realidad. Gaspar Romero, el hermano de Monseñor, recuerda que el arzobispo predijo, “mirá, la guerra no la detienen ya ... lo que viene va [a] ser terrible, pero lo más terrible es lo que vendrá después de la guerra”. (Valencia y Arias, EL FARO.) En el registro público, Mons. Romero expandió: “Las violencias seguirán cambiando de nombre, pero habrá siempre violencia, mientras no se cambie la raíz de donde están brotando, como de una fuente fecunda, todas estas cosas tan horrorosas de nuestro ambiente”. (Hom. 25 de septiembre de 1977.)

Y la solución para la violencia—sea cual sea su nombre—siempre es la misma fórmula de la paz que predicó monseñor.

El Papa Benedicto XVI habló sobre la justicia y la paz a los dirigentes y al personal del Inspectorado de la seguridad pública del Vaticano el 13 de enero del 2012. El Santo Padre hizo como eco de Mons. Romero diciendo que la paz no es sólo la ausencia de guerra o “el resultado de la acción de los hombres para evitarla”, sino sobre todo “un don de Dios que hay que pedir con fe y que en Jesucristo encuentra la vía para alcanzarla ... La paz verdadera, pues, es una obra por construir cotidianamente con el aporte de la compasión, la solidaridad, la fraternidad y con la colaboración de cada uno”. Agregó, adhiriéndose aún más a Mons. Romero: “Está profundamente relacionada con la justicia”, y advirtió que no puede haber justicia “cuando, en nombre de una presunta justicia, dominan los criterios de la ganancia, del provecho y del tener, [y] se puede incluso pisotear el valor y la dignidad de la persona humana”.

URIOSTE'S PRAYER

On the night of March 24, 1980, Msgr. Ricardo Urioste entered the Divine Providence Hospital Chapel in San Salvador, and stood before the altar where Archbishop Romero had been assassinated earlier that evening and, after receiving an update from the nuns that run the hospice, he led an impromptu prayer of the mourners at the chapel. The whole scene is captured in this remarkable video (in Spanish):

Msgr. Urioste, who had served as Archbishop Romero's vicar general, fought back tears to compose the following prayer (presented as the answer to a reporter's question) as mourners spontaneously gathered around him (Super Martyrio translation):

Well, I think all the people of El Salvador are in mourning. I mean, all the good people, because there are people who are not good, part of our Salvadoran family who is not so, unfortunately.

And I think our first thought is a thought of giving thanks to the Lord for having given us an archbishop of such great worth. For letting us have him for three years. For his having been so profoundly Christian, so profoundly a priest, such a lover of justice and peace. And that's the reason for his murder—having loved righteousness and wished for peace.

So I repeat that all the good people of El Salvador are in mourning. Some are not, some are rejoicing. That is a dark grace. That is the greatest sin that has been committed in this country.

With him, we think of so many Salvadorans who have been killed, who are being killed, and we think this magnicide of our archbishop who was so dear, who was so much admired, who was such a man of faith, who was such a man of prayer ... Something I wish to say at this juncture is this: no one prayed as he did, in this country. With what simplicity he prayed his Rosary! With what simplicity he knelt before the Blessed Sacrament! With what fervor he prayed his Breviary!

There was a man of prayer, there was a man beloved by all, whom we will not be able to replace. But the Church wants everyone to know this clearly: the Church does not depend upon one man. The Church will move forward. She knows what her mission is, because it is not the mission of a single man. It is the mission of all of us in the Church. And this Church led by her Pontiffs, driven above all by the Gospel, is, thus, directed, and it will always continue to concentrate on God, on man, and on that very same Church.

I would invite the whole country at this time ... This is the saddest death that has occurred in the country. All deaths are sad, all deaths are painful. I know there are many who stand with the Church at this time, because many have suffered martyrdom in their loved ones. Those who have suffered martyrdom in their loved ones know what the Church is now suffering. But we always remember the Gospel. The gates of hell shall not prevail against her.

I would conclude by inviting everyone to a prayer—a prayer for him, who, like all human beings, needs our prayers. We know he stands already before God, that he has appeared before Him and declared, “Mission accomplished, my Lord. Here I am. Like You on the Cross, here I am, too, after completing my mission as You asked me to do, and as You wanted.” I would like for everyone, then, to say a prayer—a prayer for him and a prayer for the country. A prayer for the just men of this country and a prayer for the wicked men of this country.

Msgr. Ricardo Urioste was schooled at San José de la Montaña Seminary in San Salvador and at Comillas University in Spain. He felt called to the priesthood at age 22, and he studied canon law in Rome, where he was ordained. Early in his career, he was the pastor at St. Francis parish. Starting during Archbishop Romero's years, he served as the archdiocese's vicar general. Later, he was Pastor of the Christ the Redeemer Parish in upscale Colonia Escalón, where he worked to generate solidarity of the wealthy parishioners for the poor. After the 2001 earthquakes, he raised funds to rebuild 126 homes of the poorer residents. He set up clinics where the indigent can see a doctor for $3 and receive free medicine. He also set up a co-op to allow parishioners to buy discounted food, and a credit union that provides micro loans. In 2002, Msgr. Urioste received a doctorate, honoris causa, from Central American University. He retired from active ministry in 2010 at age 85. He continues to be president of Fundación Monseñor Óscar Arnulfo Romero.

PERSPECTIVAS DE BEATIFICACIÓN 2012

El 2010, este blog clasificó el estado de la causa de canonización de Mons. Romero bajo “luz amarilla”, es decir, que experimenta una demora que no le permite avanzar de manera apreciable, y este año nuevamente mantenemos esa misma lectura del estado de la causa. En resumen, la causa se encuentra en un nivel avanzado y ha superado ya unos obstáculos mayores, con importantes factores que favorecen. Sin embargo, se detecta una detención que la mantiene en compás de espera; cuando se de la “luz verde”, se cree que avanzará con rapidez.

Nuestro análisis se confirmó por el Canciller Hugo Martínez, después de su entrevista con el Postulador de la Causa de Canonización, Mons. Vincenzo Paglia. El informe Martínez reportó que: (1) “El proceso de beatificación se encuentra ahora en la Congregación para la Doctrina de la Fe”; (2) “que hasta la fecha no ha encontrado nada en contra de la fe profesada por Óscar Arnulfo Romero y su labor pastoral”; y que (3) “Una vez haya una conclusión de esta Congregación, el proceso iría a una etapa final en la Congregación de la Causa de los Santos”.

Como se había reportado en este blog, el desvío a la Congregación para la Doctrina de la Fe ocurrió originalmente en el año 2000, cuando cuatro cardenales latinoamericanos, incluyendo el ex presidente de CELAM Alfonso López Trujillo (Q.D.D.G.), exigieron una revisión de la ortodoxia (la doctrina correcta) de Mons. Romero. A base de ese examen, el año siguiente, una comisión de expertos de la CDF concluyó que Mons. Romero “no era un obispo revolucionario, sino un hombre de la Iglesia, del Evangelio y de los pobres”. En el 2005, cuando el proceso estaba a punto de pasar a la etapa final, los disidentes pidieron se hiciera un estudio de la ortopraxis (la práctica correcta) de Mons. Romero. Este estudio tampoco generó inconvenientes a la beatificación de Mons. Romero.

Para entender que podría enlentecer un proceso cuando los requisitos formales no constituyen un impedimento, es necesario entender las políticas o consideraciones prudenciales de la Santa Sede en el manejo de estos casos. El vaticanista John Allen ha nombrado cinco factores que pueden acelerar el progreso en casos de alto perfil, como lo han sido la Madre Teresa y el Papa Juan Pablo II. Sin embargo, un estudio de los factores de Allen nos deja rascándonos la cabeza, porque varios de los factores parecen favorecer el caso Mons. Romero. Por ejemplo, Allen dice que “la mayoría [de los casos acelerados] tienen una organización detrás de ellos completamente comprometida con la causa, con los recursos y la comprensión política para avanzar la pelota”. En el caso Romero, la causa es apoyada por la Comunidad Sant Egidio, cuya influencia en la Iglesia ha sido recientemente alabada, llevando a uno de sus fundadores al gabinete de gobierno de Italia, y al mismo postulador de la causa de Mons. Romero (del mismo movimiento) a ser considerado candidato para patriarca de Venecia. (De darse, ese nombramiento también podría impactar en el proceso.)

Dice Allen, “varios de los casos del carril expreso implican un 'primero', generalmente para reconocer una región geográfica específica o a una población infrarrepresentada” y en el caso Romero, monseñor sería el primer salvadoreño elevado a los altares. Dice Allen, “hay a veces un tema político o cultural simbolizado por estos candidatos que presta una percepción de urgencia” y Mons. Romero sería el mártir más importante en una hora en que la Iglesia quiere acentuar el martirio, como también sería el exponente más importante de la doctrina social de la Iglesia. Allen dice que “los casos carril expreso disfrutan generalmente del respaldo jerárquico de forma aplastante, de los obispos de la región y en Roma” y a pesar de la mentada oposición de un pequeño grupo de cardenales, la fama de Mons. Romero ha crecido de manera impresionante en toda la Iglesia; el episcopado salvadoreño ha enviado una carta de apoyo al Vaticano, como lo han hecho numerosas conferencias de obispos de diversos países, y el apoyo de cardenales en altos puestos de la Iglesia mundial últimamente ha sido abundante.

El último punto de Allen es que “las causas logran el carril expreso porque el papa de turno tiene una inversión personal”. Este es un factor interesante. En un periodo de menos de un año, entre marzo del 2007 y febrero del 2008, el Papa Benedicto mencionó a Mons. Romero en tres ocasiones distintas—dos de ellas de su propia iniciativa, y dos de ellas en términos muy conmovedores. Sin embargo, después de estas referencias, el pontífice ha guardado un silencio abrumador sobre el tema. El primero de los comentarios lo hizo Benedicto en relación a la fecha del aniversario del martirio de Mons. Romero, y el segundo, cuando el papa volaba hacia Brasil en el 2007, y un reportero introdujo el tema comentando de que, “llegamos al continente de monseñor Óscar Romero”. Este año, Benedicto estará en tierras latinoamericanas para el propio aniversario. El 24 de marzo del 2011, el Papa estará en León, Guanajuato y el 25 se reunirá con obispos latinoamericanos, presuntamente incluyendo a prelados salvadoreños. Será interesante ver si Mons. Romero se hace presente en esos encuentros.

El canciller salvadoreño Hugo Martínez comentó a los medios el 8 de enero del 2012 que “hemos discutido a nivel de cancilleres en la región centroamericana ... la posibilidad de extender una invitación como región”, para lograr que el papa Benedicto XVI visite Centro América. Este blog ha comentado las ventajas que una visita papal traería a la causa de beatificación, y el Canciller Martínez ha demostrado su afán de verla prosperar.

CENTENNIAL COUNTDOWN

It’s 2012. That means that in five years, we will be marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of Oscar Arnulfo Romero—the Romero Centennial (or Centenary, as it were). Super Martyrio is asking all the Blog readers to think about what you would like to see the Romero Centennial celebrations to look like at an international scale, and to tell us what you will be doing to celebrate 100 years since Archbishop Romero’s birth on August 15, 2017, and throughout the centennial year.

To kick-start the conversation, here are some things that the Church, and institutions like Fundación Mons. Romero in El Salvador, the Archbishop Romero Trust in the UK, or some new Centennial Commission could consider organizing in 2017:

Rename the Salvadoran airport “Aeropuerto Internacional Mons. Oscar Arnulfo Romero.”

The Salvadoran American National Network launched this campaign a few years ago, but did not reach its goal by the intended date—March 24, 2010, the 30th anniversary of Romero’s assassination. Perhaps, with five years to do it, the goal may be attainable. On the other hand, maybe this is too easy and we need to think more outside the box …

Create a “ROMERO VIVE” sign on the San Salvador volcano (illustration).

A 'Hollywood sign'-style monument overlooking San Salvador would get a lot of bang for the buck, because it would be seen by all and not be prohibitively expensive. (For example, the Hollywood sign cost $21,000 in 1923, or about $280,000.00 in 2011 dollars.) The sign could even be established on a temporary basis for the Romero Centennial, and taken for a test drive. (Romero vive = Sp. for "Romero lives!")

A Pontifical Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica.

If we want to imagine the greatest tribute from the Catholic world, this one would be hard to top. Maybe we can make idea be the opening gambit, and if we have to settle for a Mass at St. Peter’s by the President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, attended (but not celebrated) by the Pope, or a festival at the Coliseum where the Pontiff makes an appearance, so be it.

Bono is a social activist whose humanitarian work has stood him in the good graces of Pope John Paul II, and he previously has sang about Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., and about “the Troubles” in Northern Ireland. Perhaps a FaceBook page asking for their assistance would get their attention, and also create publicity/discussion in the run-up to the Centennial.

Thinking about using economies of scale, it could be that a balloon release done in numerous countries would be a way to attract attention, since the balloons would drift across the skylines of major cities. It’s been done before, and there are regulations and guidelines to help you do it right, but it probably would not get much play unless it was done in large proportions.

These are some ideas that came to mind, but this is a project that numerous minds should contribute to, not just once, but over the next five years. This blog’s readers are requested to contribute their ideas in the comments section below, or by email, or any other way that you feel appropriate. Recent “centennials” for U.S. president Ronald Reagan, folk singer Woody Guthrie and even bluegrass musician Bill Monroe demonstrate that such celebrations provide opportunities to raise awareness and the profile of the subjects of the celebrations as well as demonstrate their existing cultural significance.

MONS. ROMERO Y SU CATEDRAL

“Imagínense”, dijo Mons. Romero, “que alguien les dice: esta Catedral tan hermosa se va a derrumbar, y no quedará piedra sobre piedra”. (Homilía del 13 de noviembre de 1977.) Si alguien pensara invocar a Mons. Romero en la polémica sobre el desmantelamiento de los espejuelos de Fernando Llort de la fachada de la Catedral Metropolitana de San Salvador, difícilmente encontraría una palabra simpatizadora en la prédica de Romero. En la homilía citada anteriormente, por ejemplo, monseñor se refería a la amenaza de Cristo de destruir el Templo de Jerusalén, que era “mucho más hermoso que nuestra Catedral”. (Ibid.)

En otra ocasión, Mons. Romero advirtió que fijarse en los aspectos artísticos de una catedral es pasar por alto el verdadero valor de la iglesia. Monseñor relata un cuento en que a tres trabajadores extrayendo piedra para una catedral gótica les preguntan por qué estaban en ese arduo trabajo. El primero cita razones económicas—este era “materialista”, dice monseñor. El segundo señala valores artísticos—este era “un poco más espiritual, pero no había llegado a la cumbre”, comenta monseñor. El que da la respuesta más acertada es el que contesta, “Porque es para una catedral, porque desde allí se elevarán muchas plegarias a Dios, y yo anticipo ya en mi trabajo la oración. Estoy picando piedras y orando”. (Hom. 10 de julio de 1977.)

Según el mito popular de “San Romero”, este optó decisivamente por no completar la obra de catedral para no restarle recursos a los pobres. En la actualidad, Mons. Romero impulsó la construcción de la catedral, interpelando en reiteradas ocasiones para recabar los fondos necesarios para sacar adelante la obra, y lo hizo en términos no ambiguos. “Ayudar a la Catedral es un deber”, dijo en una ocasión, citando el ejemplo de una persona que dejó un sobre con “una cantidad de dinero que corresponde a la décima parte de su salario como ofrenda a Nuestro Señor”. (Hom. 23 de julio de 1978). En otra ocasión, agradeció el aporte de una madre de un desaparecido que había enviado “su pobre ofrenda de 10.00 para nuestra Catedral”. (Hom. 1 de julio de 1979.) Seis meses antes de su martirio, Mons. Romero seguía suplicando: “Quiero pedirles, queridos hermanos, por nuestra Catedral, que está en un momento muy difícil y allá está la secretaría donde pueden ayudarnos llevando ayudas, ya sea en efectivo o en los materiales que ya pueden indicar”. (Hom. 30 de septiembre de 1979.)

El avance de la construcción fue impedido por las complicaciones de la vida política de El Salvador a fines de los años 70. Para fines de 1979, los esfuerzos habían llegado a “un impasse muy serio”. (Hom. 23 de septiembre de 1979.) La razón eran las constantes ocupaciones de la catedral por las organizaciones populares, cuyos derechos de participación Mons. Romero apoyaba, pero cuya táctica de tomas de las iglesias, le dejaban un mal sabor al arzobispo: “con las ocupaciones”, explicaba monseñor, “ha sufrido trastornos muy serios no sólo en su culto, sino también en su construcción”. (Ibid.) Pero no solo la izquierda impidió el trabajo: en mayo del 79 la organización ultraderechista Unión Guerrera Blanca se atribuyó el asesinato de Carlos Humberto Montoya Ortiz, quien trabajaba en la contabilidad de la construcción de la Catedral y en el Secretariado Interdiocesano Social. (Hom. 27 de mayo de 1979.)

Para salir de estos aprietos, la comisión de Mons. Romero buscó salidas practicas a la falta de recursos. “Vamos a ver como conseguimos el dinero que hace falta para terminar la cúpula, que es lo que urge”, dijo Mons. Romero, “y después, aunque sea en forma pobre, vamos a cubrir los ventanales y aunque sea sobre tierra ya podemos habilitar la Catedral, una Catedral de un pueblo pobre”. (Hom. 23/9/1979, Supra.) En su diario, monseñor relata cómo la comisión se rebuscaba para solventar la problemática: “se ofreció sacar del banco prestado sobre nuestras mismas cédulas hipotecarias, o pedir al padre Sáenz [Fernando Sáenz Lacalle, después arzobispo de San Salvador], a quien se le ha prestado un dinero para su construcción, adelante su devolución”. (SU DIARIO, 19 de septiembre de 1979.) Al fin, fue Mons. Sáenz Lacalle, el que logró la creación de la Fundación Catedral, presidida por el reconocido banquero Archi Baldocchi y conformada por los también empresarios José Alfredo Dutriz, Boris Eszerski, Roberto Llach Hill, Carlos Enrique Araujo, Francisco Callejas y Roberto Murray Meza, que recaudó 30 millones de colones para finalizar la construcción de la Catedral (C.G. Ramos, ENVIO), incluyendo la instalación del mosaico de azulejos de Fernando Llort (Carías y Vaquerano, EL FARO).

La catedral de Mons. Romero, según su arzobispo mártir, siempre ha tenido que ser controversial: “precisamente por ser el signo de la Iglesia tiene que ser el blanco de las contradicciones, objeto de muchas murmuraciones pero también objeto de mucha generosa colaboración”. ICONOCLASM?

The Archdiocese of San Salvador fumbled into controversy on Friday, December 30, 2011, when a work crew unceremoniously took hammers to the colorful facade of the San Salvador Cathedral, in whose crypt Archbishop Romero is buried and which was visited by President Barack Obama earlier this year, and by Pope John Paul II in 1983 and 1996. The decision to destroy the artwork decorating the facade, created by leading Salvadoran artist Fernando Llort was immediately criticized by Llort’s family and foundation, and condemned by the Salvadoran government as the destruction of a national heritage piece (it represented the Salvadoran peace accords, whose 20th anniversary is being celebrated next month).

According to Church officials, Llort’s tile mosaic was removed to make way for new decorations featuring the Divine Savior of the World (the Transfigured Jesus—San Salvador’s patron saint) and a bronze statue by an undisclosed artist, with which the Llort tiles did not match. Additionally, Church officials have said that Llort’s tiles were eroded and were coming off. Even to many who would have accepted that explanation (Llort’s tiles were not universally loved), the process did not sit well. Most Salvadorans were surprised when the unannounced plan was implemented on Friday, and the Llort foundation lamented the fact that they were not informed, much less given the opportunity to salvage the artwork. Instead, Llort’s children found themselves rummaging through piles of the shattered fragments of what they insist had been Fernando Llort’s central work.

Oddly, even the Cathedral web site extols the praises of Llort’s frontispiece. “Outside the Cathedral,” the web site boasts, “the facade has attained a very special importance.” The text comments on the specific styles of the facade, chosen for their local cultural significance. “As an element of contrast,” the narrative goes on, “that certainly brings a unique personality to the Cathedral, you can see a large ceramic mural created by Fernando Llort and his workshop ‘The Tree of God,’ which constitutes the most significant point of reference in current Salvadoran art.” Um, it did anyway, until we inexplicably and suddenly smashed it to bits.

To compare the actions to the Taliban’s destruction of the 6th century Buddhas of Bamiyan would certainly be overstating the case, but the example faintly crosses one’s mind as a reference point for a clerical lack of perspective. This is a Church which, as John Paul said during his 1996 visit, is “intimately allied with the joys and hopes of the Salvadoran people.” Archbishop Romero is buried here, and the Crypt where he is entombed was recently called the Sanctuary of the Salvadoran Martyrs. Salvadorans watched the Old Cathedral burn to the ground in 1951, and they have literally had to wash blood off of its steps because of massacres there in the 1980s. It seems the place deserves more reverence.

Afterword. On Sunday, January 1, Archbishop Jose Escobar gave the Church's long-awaited explanation for its actions. After apologizing to Llort for any hurt feelings and offering to have a smaller scale replica of the tiles installed inside the Cathedral, Escobar said that the removal was unplanned, but made necessary after a routine clean up and paint operation revealed that the tiles were irreparably damaged and were falling off, threatening the safety of passersby. On Tuesday, January 3, Llort held a press conference in which he said he accepted the archbishop's apology, but wanted a detailed technical explanation and the pieces back. For its part, the Funes government said it was going to court to press to make the Church restore the mural.

LOS SANTOS INOCENTES

Entre las celebraciones más coloridas de El Salvador figuran los festejos patronales en honor a los Santos Niños Inocentes del municipio de Antiguo Cuscatlán (fotos), que conmemora el pasaje bíblico en el que San Mateo narra la masacre de los niños inocentes por Herodes, para evitar el reinado de Jesús. Cuando Monseñor Romero presidió la celebración el 28 de diciembre de 1977 (oír audio), le quiso dar un toque de autenticidad a una tradición que data de la época colonial.

Mons. Romero comenzó recalcando la reseña histórica del relato de la masacre, señalando como el historiador judío Flavio Josefo, “nos cuenta que Herodes tenía un afán enfermizo de poder y tenía como sospecha de todo el mundo, por eso es que mató a algunos familiares suyos porque sospechaba que le querían quitar el poder; todo lo que era sombra contra su poder daba miedo, y así mandaba a eliminar”. (Ver también “Jesús, aproximación histórica” de José Antonio PAGOLA, en el que comenta que, “La memoria del comportamiento siniestro de Herodes hacia cualquiera que pudiera poner en peligro su poder está, sin duda detrás de la leyenda de la ‘masacre de los inocentes’ en Belén a manos de sus soldados”, edición en inglés, Editorial Convivium, 2011, pág. 34).

Después de direccionar la colorida tradición folclórica “para profundizar en el Evangelio”, Mons. Romero hace su proyección hacia la realidad no solamente del Israel de Flavio Josefo, sino también de El Salvador de 1977. Dando como un adelanto de lo que sería su “última homilía” del 23 de marzo de 1980, en la que declaró que “ningún soldado está obligado a obedecer una orden contra la ley de Dios”, en esta homilía navideña de 1977, Mons. Romero nos predica que, “Cuando un rey manda matar niños, matar gente, los soldados no tienen que obedecer. Es una orden cruel, inmoral, sanguinaria; sin embargo, las espadas serviles matan a los inocentes”. Las palabras de Mons. Romero como que eran también una profecía de las atrocidades que serían cometidas en lugares como El Mozote, donde 130 niños figuraban entre las víctimas de la horrorosa masacre, muchos de ellos matados a golpes y machetazos.

Pero, Mons. Romero, aquel exponente auténtico de la verdadera doctrina de la Iglesia, no podía dejar allí el tema, sino que lo adelantó un nivel más: “¡qué cruel Herodes! ¡qué crueles sus soldados!, pero sabemos que hoy mueren mucho más que aquel pequeño grupo de niños de Belén”, dijo desplazándose hacia otro tema. Mons. Romero comparó la masacre de los Inocentes a la matanza moderna de niños a través del aborto: “el pecado de Herodes se repite hoy también en esos campos donde se prostituye la facultad que Dios ha dado al hombre y a la mujer para engendrar hijos; no para el placer, no para usar de la carne, no como Herodes solamente por el egoísmo; es el rey y los demás le importan nada, aunque sean los propios hijos”. Mons. Romero termina con un motivo alentador, diciendo que de la misma manera que Jesús evadió las intrigas de Herodes, cuando este pretendía frenar su llegada desde niño, “el proyecto de Dios tiene que realizarse a pesar de los estorbos de los hombres, o mejor dicho, valiéndose de los mismos crímenes de los hombres que Dios ocupa también como instrumentos para hacerse sentir en el mundo ... These were the stories that kept Archbishop Romero in the headlines in 2011, thirty one years after his assassination. Even though there was no news on the canonization front, 2011 was a strong Romero year.

1. OBAMA VISITS ROMERO'S GRAVE

The L.A. Times called Obama’s tribute to Romero, “arguably ... the most dramatic gesture of his swing through Brazil, Chile and El Salvador.” The clamor and clangor of a presidential visit (Obama’s motorcade was said to consist of over thirty cars) led to silence and solemnity as Obama, accompanied by Salvadoran President Mauricio Funes, and Archbishop José Escobar, lit a candle in the Cathedral crypt. Activists fumed that Obama didn’t speak, but the symbolism said it all.

2. NEVER BEFORE SEEN ROMERO PHOTOS SEE THE LIGHT

Four hundred slides of and by Óscar Romero revealed the human side of a man known primarily for his clerical career. Apart from showing competence as a photographer, the pictures reveal Romero’s life-long concern for the poor, whom he presents with “a very special sensibility ... that not every priest is going to have.”

3. CANONIZATION OFFICE PUTS ROMERO WRITINGS ON-LINE

Over six hundred articles and commentaries by Archbishop Romero, written throughout his priestly and episcopal career, were published for the first time on the Internet on the canonization office web site. Like his photographs, Romero’s writings offer a glimpse into his evolving “preferential option for the poor” before he was Archbishop of San Salvador.

4. SALVIE PAPER FINGERS SUPPOSED ROMERO SHOOTER

National Guard Deputy Sargeant Marino Samayoa Acosta was the bearded man who pulled the trigger on March 24, 1980, killing the Archbishop of San Salvador, according to Diario CoLatino. The Salvadoran government announced that it “does not rule out” conducting an investigation.

5. SALVIE FOREIGN MINISTER MEETS WITH POSTULATOR

About the only glimpse into the secret workings of the beatification drive came when Salvadoran Foreign Minister Hugo Martínez called on Msgr. Vincenzo Paglia, the Postulator of the canonization cause, and apparently confirmed that the process is still with the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and not yet with the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.

6. NEW ROMERO DOCUMENTARY OUT

“El cielo abierto” ["The Open Sky"], directed by Mexican filmmaker Everardo Gonzalez, was the latest attempt to tell the Romero story anew. Daily Variety opined that, “this is a solid, moving treatment of a major late-20th century figure, and should see fest[ival] play followed by docu[mentary] channel rotation.” (Read more.)

7. SPANISH COURT: ROMERO KILLED FOR PROMOTING PEACE

In the cat and mouse moves between a Spanish court investigating the 1989 Jesuit massacre and the Salvadoran military officers accused of having perpetrated it, you might have missed the Court’s finding that the Romero's assassins acted out of fear Romero, as a peace maker, was an affront to their military careers.

8. WIKILEAKS: SALVIE GOV'T TRIED TO POLITICIZE CANONIZATION

Wikileaks revealed that the Salvadoran government had considered supporting the Romero beatification to get the Church to stand down on demanding an investigation of the crime. The leaked Sep. 2007 cable reported that “The [Government of El Salvador] is considering an approach to the Vatican to seek the Holy See’s support for dropping the case from the [Inter-American Commission on Human Rights] without derailing Romero’s beatification.”

9. CARD. TURKSON: ROMERO WAS "GOOD SHEPHERD"

After visiting El Salvador in Nov. 2010, Cardinal Peter Turkson of Ghana professed “a growing appreciation” of Archbishop Romero. He delivered the Romero Lecture at Notre Dame University in March. “My home country of Ghana was also beset by various types of conflict,” observed the cardinal. “Drawing near to Archbishop Romero … I feel encouraged in my role as as President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and a close-co-worker of the Holy Father.”

10. SALVIE PAPER GETS PRIZE

El Faro’s story last year had tracked down Cpt. Álvaro Saravia, thought to have organized the Romero assassination, in an unknown country, where now he lives in squalor not unlike that of the victims whom Archbishop Romero defended. “The worst misfortune in the world! Poverty!,” Saravia now admited: “How could a man not be a guerrilla if he saw his children dying of hunger?” Now the article has won a Latin American journalism award.

¿PATRIARCA PAGLIA?

Los medios italianos han publicado una especulación de que Mons. Vincenzo Paglia, el postulador de la causa de canonización de Mons. Romero, podría ser nombrado el próximo Patriarca de Venecia. Algunos comentarios se han atrevido hasta hablar de Paglia como un posible “papabile”, ya que tres papas del siglo XX fueron elevados al trono de San Pedro desde la “ciudad de los canales”.

Parece que los rumores sobre la supuesta elevación de Paglia comenzaron luego de que su cercano colaborador, Andrea Riccardi, fuera nombrado ministro sin cartera para la cooperación internacional en el gobierno de Mario Monti. Los dos—Paglia y Riccardi—son líderes del movimiento católico San Egidio, que ha tenido cierta simpatía por la figura de Mons. Romero. Otro miembro de San Egidio, Roberto Morozzo della Rocca, escribió una importante biografía de Mons. Romero que Mons. Paglia entregó al papa, y que el mismo Benedicto reconoció como una importante herramienta para restaurar la figura de Mons. Romero de la politización que la ha deformado, según la jerarquía de la Iglesia.

Además de ser consejero espiritual de San Egidio, Mons. Paglia también es obispo de la diócesis de Terni-Narni-Amelia en Umbría, Italia. También lleva importantes funciones en la conferencia de obispos italianos. En su papel de Obispo de Terni-Narni-Amelia, Mons. Paglia ha recién publicado una carta sobre la navidad 2011. En ella, Paglia escribe: “Es verdad que hemos edificado una sociedad poco justa y poco sana. La riqueza y el bienestar, por ejemplo, no son compartidos igualmente, los derechos humanos no son gozados por todos, los recursos no sirven para garantizar una vida digna del planeta … La opulencia y la abundancia de los pocos se paga, más y más con la miseria de las mayorías”.

Si Paglia es nombrado Patriarca de Venecia no está claro quién lideraría la causa de canonización de Mons. Romero.

ÓSCAR ROMERO AT EL MOZOTE

«Woe to him who buildeth cities with blood, and foundeth castles with injustice,» cries the prophet (Habakkuk 2:12). A condemnation “against genocide,” preached Archbishop Romero: “The prophet’s words seem to be written for our time.” (October 2, 1977 Sermon.)

It is estimated that 30,000 were killed in El Salvador between 1979 and 1981 (TimelinesDB chronology): “At the peak of the violence in late 1980, the monthly toll of politically motivated murders ran between 700 and 800.” (USLC Country Studies, El Salvador.) Therefore, approximately half of the death toll of the entire 12-year Salvadoran Civil War occurred during those dark years that saw such infamous crimes as the assassination of Monsignor Romero himself in March 1980; the Rio Sumpul massacre of some 300 civilians in May of that year; the rape and murder of the U.S. churchwomen that December; and several other massacres culminating in the El Mozote massacre, of some one thousand peasants from several adjoining hamlets, in December 1981. Archbishop Romero’s immolation is intimately bound with these massacres in three important respects: (1) Romero sought to be “incarnated” in the suffering of his people; (2) all these deaths have been brushed aside by a corrupt system that would deprive the dignity of their lives by denying them justice; and (3) Romero lives in the historic memory alongside the El Mozote victims, whose memorial reads: “They have not died; they are with us, with you, and with all of humanity.”

Archbishop Romero lived in the era of the massacre. A significant number of the thousands of deaths that occurred during the period were deaths resulting from mass slaughters, including of civilians. A Salvadoran newspaper has estimated that some 6,765 perished in documented massacres—like El Mozote—occurring between 1980 and 1983. Forty four people died at Romero’s funeral after soldiers reportedly fired at the crowd and at the casket. Archbishop Romero put himself in the killers’ sights when he advocated for the victims, publishing results of atrocities compiled by his own Legal Aid Office, staffed by young lawyers and law students. “It would be sad,” he said, “if in a country where murder is being committed so horribly, we were not to find priests among the victims.” (June 30, 1979 Sermon.) Then he added, “They are the testimony of a Church incarnated in the problems of her people.”

Of course, Archbishop Romero faced the same destiny as the victims of El Mozote when he, too, was subjected to an extrajudicial killing intended to silence and subjugate the Salvadoran people. He also shared in the victims’ fate when his murder was shelved by a judicial system determined not to seek the truth or, much less, punishment or redress for the crime. El Salvador passed an Amnesty Law, which “was a clear attempt to keep anyone involved in the murder of Archbishop Romero, the El Mozote Massacre, the murder of the Jesuits, and other crimes against humanity from facing investigations, charges or further publicity.” (Bethany Loberg, El Mozote: Seeking Justice in Spite of the Amnesty Law.)

But, official indifference was overcome by the popular clamor that has raised Archbishop Romero to an international human rights hero. “People around the world draw inspiration from Archbishop Romero,” stated President Barack Obama in a handwritten note in the registry book at Romero’s grave when he visited in 2011. “May we all follow his example in championing social justice and human rights.” In a recent commemoration of the anniversary of the UCA Massacre celebrated at Romero’s grave, the Jesuit provincial called Romero’s crypt the “Sanctuary of the Salvadoran Martyrs,” and the Dean of the Central American University said that it resounds with “the cries of children in El Mozote and the pain of all the massacres, rape, torture and impunity” so that “memory becomes hopeful, transformative identity and ethical potential for building a better society.” (Tojeira, National Sanctuary.)

“Ya se ha vuelto un lugar común entre nosotros la acusación cotidiana contra la iglesia y sus ministros”, se quejaba Mons. Romero. “En las páginas de la prensa diaria, en campo pagado o en artículos”, decía: “ya no puede hablar un obispo, cumpliendo su deber pastoral, sin que se le tilde de comunista. Ya no puede un sacerdote predicar la justicia social, sin que se le atribuyan tendencias extremistas”. Estos comentarios los hizo hace cuarenta años, precisamente en diciembre de 1971, cuando era todavía obispo auxiliar de San Salvador una década antes de ser arzobispo. Aunque estos años en San Salvador son recordados como un periodo de tendencia conservadora en Mons. Romero, sus publicaciones del año 71 en particular reflejan un verdadero esfuerzo de obedecer el mandato reformista de la conferencia de obispos latinoamericanos en Medellín tres años atrás—la que marcó y definió la “opción preferencial por los pobres” que Romero adoptaría con tanto esmero durante su arzobispado. Medellín, escribe Romero el año 71, debe ser aceptado como “una fuerte invitación a la conversión personal”. (OAR, A tres años de Medellín, ORIENTACIÓN, Nº. 1234 Págs. 3 y 8, domingo 5 de septiembre del 1971.) “Medellín es un verdadero Pentecostés en nuestro Continente”, escribe Romero. Como en el Pentecostés de las Sagradas Escrituras, el Espíritu Santo ha dado una revelación a los obispos del Sínodo de Medellín, dice Romero, para iluminar la realidad latinoamericana: “Cuando el Espíritu de Dios habla, sólo hay una postura correcta: oírlo y ser fiel a sus reclamos”. No hacerlo es “un pecado contra el Espíritu Santo y contra la Iglesia”. (Op. Cit.)

Si bien Romero consideraba a Medellín como una invitación “personal” a la conversión que constituía pecado desobedecerla, entonces la verdadera “conversión” de Mons. Romero se debe empezar a dar desde ese momento. Como predicaría en su arzobispado: “Esta necesidad de conversión ... la vive el Pastor y la predica como una necesidad personal de él ... Créanme, hermanos, que yo quisiera ir adelante de toda esa procesión de conversión que nuestra diócesis está realizando”. (Homilía del 18 de febrero de 1979.) En 1971, el año en que monseñor confiesa sentirse personalmente interpelado a la conversión, escribe varias notas en el semanario de la arquidiócesis que llevan un acento profético:

Denuncia el trato que reciben los trabajadores del campo y rechaza los pretextos económicos que interponen los patronos para no mejorar condiciones: “Para nosotros no vale el argumento de que la agricultura no puede soportar las cargas que supone el establecimiento de nuevas prestaciones sociales y un mejoramiento en los salarios de hambre que devengan actualmente nuestros trabajadores del campo”. (OAR, Los campesinos no son parias, ORIENTACIÓN, Nº. 1226 Págs. 3 y 6, domingo 4 de julio de 1971). Manifiesta que “el desarrollo de nuestros recursos es poco menos que inútil si sólo va a beneficiar a un grupo privilegiado de salvadoreños, sin abarcar a todo el hombre y a todos los habitantes de nuestra tierra”. En otra nota vuelve a tratar el tema. (OAR, Soluciones humanas, ORIENTACIÓN, Nº. 1241 Págs. 3 y 6, domingo 24 de octubre de 1971). Aparentemente los comerciantes habían respondido, argumentando reducciones en los precios de los productos agrícolas, y Mons. Romero de nuevo rechaza los argumentos: “En los negocios no siempre se gana ... Esto no quiere decir que cualquier empresa, para obtener ganancias, en lugar de pérdidas, va a sacrificar a sus empleados o a sus obreros”. Y amonesta: “El trabajador no es una mercancía, sujeta a los vaivenes de la economía, sino que una persona humana, que por el sólo hecho de serlo, tiene derecho a un salario justo, suficiente para cubrir sus necesidades materiales y culturales”. Finalmente, interpela, “Seamos conscientes. Seamos humanos. Seamos cristianos. La empresa se ha hecho para el hombre y no el hombre para la empresa”. (Op. Cit.)

Denuncia que “el 73 por ciento de los niños menores de cinco años son desnutridos” y que “la solución integral a este problema aterrador, solo se encuentra en la superación de nuestra condición socio-económica”. (A tres años ... Supra.) “¿No es un hecho espeluznante y una realidad trágica la que atraviesa la niñez salvadoreña?”, se pregunta, “¿No se conmueven los corazones de los ‘satisfechos’ que no quieren cambios de ninguna clase? ¿Seguirán llamando comunista a los discípulos de Cristo que, como su divino Maestro, sienten compasión por estas muchedumbres hambrientas y quieren remediar la situación de miseria que padecen?” Agrega, “Y no se trata simplemente de dar, como limosna, las migajas que sobran de nuestra mesa. Debemos”, escribe, “salvar a todos los hombres y a todo el hombre, en cuerpo y alma, atendiendo a sus necesidades materiales y espirituales, pero de manera especial a los niños”. (Op. Cit.)

Para fines del año, ya estaba sintetizando como una gran tesis: “Es un hecho incontrovertible que una porción mayoritaria de nuestra población vive en la miseria material espiritual y moral”, escribe. (Defendiendo Intereses, supra.) “Negarlo sería cerrar los ojos a la realidad o pretender tapar el sol con la palma de la mano”. Después profundiza que la Iglesia no es “enemiga de los ricos. Pero no puede constituirse en defensora de sus intereses, ni puede traicionar su misión de liberación evangélica. Por esto no puede callar, ni permanecer como simple espectadora indiferente a la vista de la injusticia y de la indigencia que parecen los pobres, los predilectos de Cristo”. (Op. Cit.)

ADVENT FOR ROMERO

More and more, people are talking about Óscar Romero. It is almost impossible to keep track of the different forums, good and bad. Most of all, it’s interesting to hear what is said in Church circles, and in recent days, the San Salvador Church has been talking up Romero in a tone that is more confident and uplifting than it had been previously. In the lead editorial in the archdiocesan newspaper Orientación, Vicar General Jesús Delgado Acevedo, draws upon the language of Isaiah 40 to present Archbishop Romero no longer as a prophet whose denunciations divide his listeners, but as the sainted Herald of Advent, who draws the people together:

The herald brings good news of liberation. He is a prophet who puts aside his attitude of denunciation, and assumes the role of an evangelizer. He now announces the Good News. He can whisper in your ear, he can say his word in a hushed tone, with love: He is speaking from the high mountain where the temple of God is found. He speaks in the name of God. His voice is heard in all directions and horizons of the earth: Archbishop Romero.

From heaven, the shepherd announces the arrival of God who comes back to dwell in the midst of a large family: the Salvadoran people ... The whole city is his. The hitherto unknown San Salvador, has become the capital of the world for all who seek justice and work for a fraternal society. From all corners of the earth, they come to pay tribute in gratitude, to the crypt in the temple of the city of God, to the herald of peace.

From the crypt of the San Salvador Cathedral, we hear a cry of love that says, «Behold your God!» He is the Savior ... The seed of salvation is planted in the crypt. The faithful of San Salvador and pilgrims from all over the world come to water it with tears of hope. Obama himself did the same, shedding the pomp of presidential power in the world to recognize with the simple heart of a grateful man, the greatness of one fallen in the battlefield of love and justice.

The message of the prophet Isaiah ends today with eloquent words: «He shall feed His flock like a shepherd; He shall gather the lambs with His arm and carry them in His bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.» (Isaiah 40:11) The figure of David, in the mind of the prophet becomes the figure of Romero in the heart of Salvadorans. Soon, we will be a people!

Even the Archbishop of San Salvador was speaking up about Romero. Archbishop José Luis Escobar was asked about a rumor that the conservative mayor of San Salvador was planning to change the name of a street named for Romero to the name of a founding father. Even though he was taken by surprise by information that later was denied by the mayor, the usually guarded archbishop let it be known that the information, if true, “is definitely not going to please the Church.” (Op. Cit.) He added, “for us it is very important that Archbishop Romero have a street dedicated to him—not just as a church, but as a nation.” Msgr. Escobar warned that such a change would be provocative and lead to conflict: “of course, as the Church, we will not agree with it, and I would say that a great part of the Salvadoran people would not agree with it.” (Id.)

Mons. Romero añora la auténtica navidad

Acerca de la celebración de la navidad, muchos cristianos están haciendo hoy precisamente lo contrario de lo que hicieron los cristianos de ayer.

El cristianismo antiguo logró, con la celebración de la navidad, cristianizar la fiesta pagana del sol. En cambio el neopaganismo de los cristianos de hoy está logrando paganizar la navidad cristiana. Jesús no nació precisamente el 25 de diciembre. La liturgia cristiana señaló esa fecha para darle un sentido cristiano a la fiesta romana del ‘Sol invicto’; los paganos de aquel imperio celebraban como el nacimiento del sol en la noche más larga del año. Aquella medianoche era considerada como el punto de partida de la marcha del sol que comenzaba a dominar las tinieblas. Resultó fácil para los cristianos cambiar el sol por Jesucristo, y hacer coincidir litúrgicamente el nacimiento de Cristo, ‘sol de justicia’, con la celebración pagana del nacimiento de sol […].

Lástima que toda esa inspiración cristiana con que nuestra liturgia bautizó una festividad pagana haya sido traicionada por muchos cristianos que hoy entregan al paganismo aquella victoria espiritual. Porque no es otra cosa que una cobarde capitulación de los cristianos al hacer prevalecer sobre el sentido evangélico de la navidad los valores del comercio y de las alegrías mundanas.

TABOO MURAL INSERTS ARCHBISHOP ROMERO

INTO SALVADORAN INDEPENDENCE STRUGGLE

Some works of art are revolting because of the subject matter they depict. An ancient Roman inscription showing the Crucified Jesus with a horse’s head was so offensive to Christians that it was labeled the «graffito blasfemo». A mural commemorating the bicentennial of the Central American “Cry for Independence” unveiled in San Salvador has raised howls because it depicts Archbishop Óscar Romero alongside the man widely believed to have ordered his assassination—Roberto D’Aubuisson (click here for detail). Oddly enough, the protests have come from D’Aubuisson’s sympathizers, in a row that reveals a lot about the politics of Archbishop Romero’s image in El Salvador.

The mural, entitled “200 years of struggle for emancipation in El Salvador,” was commissioned by the Salvadoran Culture Ministry to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the movement that led to El Salvador’s independence. The mural, created by Salvadoran artist Antonio Bonilla, recalls the scale and spirit of the murals commissioned in the U.S. by the Works Progress Administration during the Great Depression—especially, the works of Diego Rivera. In the mural, Bonilla posits, as the name of his work suggests, that the independence movement was not a discrete historical event that occurred 200 years ago, but a process that has occupied El Salvador for the past two centuries, and is still underway. Thus, the mural includes scenes of El Salvador’s founding fathers ringing their liberty bell, but also includes images of a 1932 peasant uprising, of the 1989 Jesuit Massacre, and of Archbishop Romero, in a polyptych (a work of art that is divided into sections, or panels) resembling an altarpiece with contrasting motifs: pre-Columbian and colonial themes, tradition and innovation, protest and repression.

The work’s principal critic—at least, the one to publicly come forth—is the retired colonel, Sigifredo Ochoa Pérez, a man of the right. Ochoa Pérez was himself a schoolmate of Roberto D’Aubuisson, and also was accused of complicity in a wartime massacre. Although he now stands as a candidate for the national legislature for the party that D’Aubuisson founded, Ochoa Pérez traditionally was aligned with a party even further to the right, and he broke ranks with the establishment in 1989 to finger higher ups who may have ordered the Jesuit Massacre. More recently, however, he sided with the Honduran government that overthrew the democratically elected populist president. “It’s a pity, because Antonio Bonilla is an excellent artist,” Ochoa Pérez told a Salvadoran paper. “I think he betrayed his ideological preferences,” Ochoa Pérez continued. “He painted with his left hand.” But what Ochoa Pérez objected to was really not the mural’s POV, which equates leftwing uprisings to the founders. “He made a mockery of our brothers in the armed forces,” Ochoa Pérez lamented, “and also of a man who had his warts like any other leader as is Roberto D’Aubuisson, depicting him in such a grotesque way in the mural.”

For his part, Bonilla defends the depiction of D’Aubuisson alongside Archbishop Romero, as an image of reconciliation—the juxtaposition of the lion and the lamb. In fact, for Bonilla, that image was not simply an act of provocation, a grenade lobbed at museum goers. It was a carefully planned composition. A video of the mural’s creation shows Bonilla methodically painting Romero before any other figure, and using a photograph to ensure accuracy, whereas all the other figures are painted freehand, as if by painting an accurate Romero, he could inoculate himself against any other falsehood. And though the right may not like Romero’s newfound prominence, they seem to begrudgingly accept it, as when the ARENA mayor of San Salvador quieted fears that he was planning to change the name of a street named after Archbishop Romero to the name of one of the founding fathers. It turns out that Archbishop Romero has his own place within the bicentennial of El Salvador’s struggle for emancipation.

MONSEÑOR ROMERO Y YO

Yo a penas llegué a conocer a monseñor Romero. Como en las viejas películas de “Ben-Hur” en que los héroes se encuentran por casualidad con Jesucristo en una escena melodramática que tiene poco que ver con la historia del film, llegué a rosarme con monseñor en episodios breves y transitorios de mi niñez. Pero algún día, si Dios me lo concede, podré atestiguar ante generaciones que no lo conocieron, de que sí lo vi, aunque a penas logré hacerlo.

Nuestra coincidencia en este “valle de lágrimas” fue un parpadear de ojos. Cuando yo nací en 1968, a monseñor ya solo le quedaba poco más de once años en su peregrinación sobre esta tierra. Y cuando él llegó a ser arzobispo de San Salvador, que fué la primera vez que pasó por mi conocimiento, a mi ya solo me quedaba año y medio en el país. Pero, su impacto fue tremendo, desde un principio.

Bien me acuerdo de la primera vez que ví su foto, en blanco y negro, en el “Diario De Hoy”, en 1977, cuando fue elevado a arzobispo de San Salvador . Leí la entrevista, y le seguí sus primeros y dramáticos pasos a través de la radio, oyendo sus impresionantes homilías dominicales, como el resto de la nación. Mi abuelita que me crió me llevaba a catedral en las fechas más importantes del calendario litúrgico, como la navidad, semana santa, y el día de la transfiguración del Divino Salvador.

Fue en este marco que presencié su apostolado profético en horas tan culminantes de su ministerio público. Fue en 1977 que asesinaron al padre Rutilio Grande, y al padre Alfonso Navarro unos meses después. Me acuerdo de asistir a catedral un sábado de gloria y observar una fogata de los Boy Scouts en la Plaza Barrios. Me acuerdo ver a monseñor Romero y algunos de sus sacerdotes en procesión alrededor del interior de la catedral, perfumando el templo con incienso, y rociándolo con agua bendita mientras que la feligresía cantaba, “Ya el Señor resucitó/Resucitó ya el Señor.” Me acuerdo ver camiones con soldados alrededor de la plaza y pensar que ellos estaban allí para participar en la misa, tal vez dando protección al rebaño de los fieles. Nunca se me ocurrió a mis nueve años de edad que sería más siniestra su presencia.

Pero, mis memorias más íntimas, y sacrosantas de monseñor Romero fueron encuentros más cercanos, aunque todos fuesen pasajes instantáneos. Son tres episodios los que prevalecen sobre todos los otros, y que han quedado grabados en mi recuerdo para siempre. Una vez, entró monseñor Romero, sin aviso por adelantado, a una misa que yo asistía con mi abuela en la Iglesia de San Esteban, en el barrio del mismo nombre. Ya que la misa había empezado, lo anunciaron con un parlante portátil desde atrás del templo, donde según me acuerdo, el iba llegando en un carro. Entró por la nave principal de la iglesia, con una casulla verde y su mitra episcopal, bendiciendo y saludando a los allí presentes, y pasando directamente enfrente de mí. Aunque fue ligero el momento, hoy me quedo impresionado de que San Esteban fue el primer mártir de la cristiandad. Para mí fue como un signo y una bendición vivir esa coincidencia.

En otra ocasión, habíamos ido mi abuelita y yo a la misa en la catedral, y al salir de la iglesia, vimos que monseñor Romero estaba saludando a la gente en las gradas de la iglesia, ante la Plaza Barrios. Aprovechando de un campito que se abrió en los gentíos que lo rodeaban, en un instante en que no había nadie, mi abuelita se le acercó y se arrodilló ante él para besarle su anillo. En ese momento el la coronó con una bendición pontífica. Por ser un poco tímido, yo no me acerqué mucho a él, pero mejor me quedé a un lado apreciando ese beatífico escenario. Para mí, mi abuela y Monseñor Romero han sido mis padres espirituales, y ese marco se me figura un retrato familiar.

El tercero encuentro es el más íntimo, pero en ciertos aspectos, también el más imprescindible y elusivo. Estábamos otra vez en catedral, posiblemente el mismo sábado de gloria indicado anteriormente. Entré a un vestíbulo con el motivo de confesarme. Hay un empañamiento del hecho, un misterio, que se envuelve con el misticismo y el espiritualismo del momento para convertir al episodio a algo más allá de la historia, y del tiempo. ¡Pero, al oír esa voz inconfundible, quedé con la indudable certidumbre de que monseñor Romero era mi confesor! Me acuerdo que sus preguntas me impresionaron por la falta de formalidad, de austeridad en su estilo de platicar conmigo: En vez de recitar las frases repetitivas de una confesión formal, me preguntó de qué parroquia venía, y otras cosas que no eran estrictamente parte de la obligada o acostumbrada revisión. Aunque sí estuve seguro de quien era, tomo cierto deleite en poder dudar si era él, porque le añade a la mística del momento, y verdaderamente, a la persistencia sobrenatural de su presencia en nuestras vidas. Monseñor Romero fue un ser espiritual, cuya presencia en la historia no se explica con la regla estéril de la ciencia, o la ciencia política, o la teología social. Fue una fuerza espiritual, como la sombra de Dios que flotaba sobre nuestro suelo.

Después de mi salida de El Salvador en 1978, seguí oyendo la voz del profeta gritándome al oído. En primer lugar, mi abuelita me mandaba cassettes con sus sermones, junto con la semita y el quesito “capa-roja” que me hacían sentirme en mi lugar cuando no lo estaba. En noviembre de 1979, me acuerdo de ver una noticia en la televisión hispana de que esperaban a monseñor Romero en Nueva Jersey . Resulta que estaba de llegar, pero tuvo que cancelar el viaje al último minuto, debido a que la situación siempre inestable de la vida nacional salvadoreña. En la catedral de San Patricio de Nueva York , donde esperaban que celebrara una misa, se reunió la comunidad que solo se quedó con las ganas de verlo.

En marzo de 1980, yo asistía al quinto grado en una escuela en Queens, Nueva York. La mayoría de los niños eran Afro-Americanos, y los únicos hispanos en mi clase eran de Puerto Rico y de Sudamérica. En el quinto grado, tenía un profesor muy estricto, un señor judío, con una barba gris, y cabeza calva y aceitada, llamado Mister Spatz. Mister Spatz me humillaba al dirigirme instrucciones en inglés, ordenándome a llevarle ciertos útiles, y yo le llevaba los equivocados. Su intención era a enseñarme el inglés, pero las carcajadas y las burlas de los otros alumnos solo me confundían más de lo que pudiese aprender.

El cuarto lunes de ese marzo, Mister Spatz me notó muy deprimido, y con bajos espíritus. Estuve muy callado todo el día y mi concentración estaba distraída. El día siguiente era el 25 de marzo y ahora Mister Spatz había entendido el por qué de mi depresión el día anterior (aunque yo no me había enterado sobre el asesinato de Mons. Romero hasta el siguiente día), y me expresó su pésame por la tragedia que indignó a todo el mundo. La bala que perforó el tórax de Mons. Romero me partió a mí el corazón, y he estado desde entonces tratando de rellenar la brecha, lo que da impulso a este blog.

ÓSCAR ROMERO’S THANKSGIVING

It is easy enough to give thanks for good and pleasant things, that we readily count as blessings. At the end of the first year of his ministry, Archbishop Romero reminded us (full text) also to be thankful for the trials and hardships that make us stronger, and to pray for those who test us.

This is the act of thanksgiving that we offer on this night as we conclude this year: we gather together and offer all the pain and suffering and injustice and abuse. As was said in our newspaper Orientación … we have perhaps lived the most tragic year in our history, yet for the Church this has been the most fertile and productive year ...

Let us give thanks to God for beneath the cross of 1977 we have seen the flourishing of seeds of hope and renewal and conversion and new vocations and faith. How many people have come to the Church and said that they had lost their faith, but thanks to the cross of 1977 they have recovered their faith! Yes it is also true that many people have distanced themselves from the Church. Those people separated themselves from the Church who had to be separated—like leaves of the tree that have changed color and are no longer able to withstand the strong winds ...

Let us give thanks to God, yes let us give thanks even for those offenses and insults, for just as the bloodied and beaten Jesus turned toward his Father and said: Father, forgive them, they know not what they do, so too this voice of Jesus during his passion has become the voice of the Church—the voice that asks for mercy for those who have offended her.

There is another reason to give thanks to God: the way in which we have tried to be faithful to the gospel and to the holy spouse of the Church, Jesus Christ. The Church has been very clear about her program: to be faithful to the gospel and in light of the gospel to analyze her life, her social relationships and her place in the world. Those things that can withstand the light of the gospel are authentic. The happiness of the children of the Church is true happiness when it is rooted in the gospel of our Lord, Jesus Christ who said: Blessed are those whose hearts are freed from the prisons of wealth, of selfishness, of hatred, and of rancor ...

At a time when we have seen so much bloodshed and hatred and evil may we call upon Mary to give us a new year and a new humanity. May the hearts of people be renewed. May the pains of conversion become pains of hope and the pain of the cross become a cross that redeems ... May all these criminal hands that have spilled so much blood be converted! May their pain be converted into repentance and may they become the builders of a better world ...

PIDE BEATIFICACIÓN DE MONS. ROMERO

El vicedecano del Colegio de Cardenales, el purpurado francés Roger Etchegaray, se ha pronunciado a favor de la beatificación de Mons. Romero, según reporta LA STAMPA de Italia. “Verdaderamente espero que Romero pronto sea beatificado por la Iglesia Católica”, el prelado dijo durante una visita a la iglesia de San Bartolomeo en Roma, donde se guarda un memorial a los mártires del siglo XX. El cardenal Etchegaray es un clérigo de alto rango en el Vaticano, que sufrió fuertes lesiones durante un ataque al Papa Benedicto XVI por una mujer trastornada durante la misa de Navidad en la Basílica de San Pedro (FOTO). Anteriormente, Etchegaray había sido el enviado del Beato Juan Pablo II para frenar la guerra en contra de Iraq, y ha sostenido altos nombramientos en la curia romana.

“La memoria de Romero siempre está aquí”, dijo Etchegaray, en referencia a una reliquia del mártir salvadoreño que se conserva en la iglesia, localizada en una isla del río Tíber. “Lo llegué a conocer bastante bien”, dijo el cardenal que también ha sido presidente de dos consejos pontífices (que asesoran al papa)—el Pontificio Consejo Justicia y Paz y el «Cor Unum». “Yo era Arzobispo de Marsella cuando él dejo a Roma para regresar a su patria y este fue su último y difícil viaje” (que incluyó la última entrevista con Juan Pablo II en febrero de 1980). 10 FICTIONS ABOUT ÓSCAR ROMERO

Good information is hard to find and, in this media age in which digital information is widely disseminated and consumed, Mark Twain’s musing has literally come true: a falsehood “can go halfway `round the world before truth gets its pants on.” Here are the ten false facts about Archbishop Romero that we run across most often.

Part I: Honest Mistakes

10. Archbishop Romero was killed at the Cathedral. Perhaps spurred by works such as Mario Bencastro’s “A Shot in the Cathedral” (a fictionalized work based on the Romero assassination), itself a reference to T. S. Eliot’s “Murder in the Cathedral” (about the assassination of Thomas Becket) and by cinematic depictions such as Oliver Stone’s “Salvador,” the location of Archbishop Romero’s assassination is often misstated. It is a natural mistake, since Romero was, in fact killed saying mass, and archbishops usually say mass in their Cathedral (and the Cathedral is a pretty dramatic locale, particularly on the big screen). Other variations of the mistake have Romero killed at the steps of the Cathedral, or during the famous sermon in which he commands the military to “Stop the Repression.” In fact, he was killed in a more low-key setting, saying Mass in the chapel of a cancer hospital on a Monday evening.

9. Prophets of a Future not Our Own. For some mysterious reason, this verse came to be known as “The Romero Prayer.” Bishop Thomas Gumbleton explains that, “The mystery is that the words of the prayer are attributed to Oscar Romero, but they were never spoken by him.” Bishop Gumbleton goes on to explain that the “prayer” was drafted by Bishop Kent Untener for a Mass given by John Cardinal Dearden in November of 1979. “They come from a homily he gave at a Mass for deceased priests.” It has elsewhere been supposed that if the prayer is not “his own,” it does belong to Romero in other ways: “It's his because it would not have the same weight or power that it does in association with him. Also, it's his in the way it seems to fit so naturally his call to service, his ideas.”

8. The Romero family was very poor. Again, the idea that the defender of the poor came from the extreme poverty that he would rise above and defend is alluring, “but that’s false,” says Archbishop Romero’s brother. “My father was from Jocoro (Morazán) and they transferred him to Ciudad Barrios because of his work as a telegrapher; my mother was a teacher,” Don Gaspar explains. Romero and his siblings grew up to become professionals—Gaspar worked in middle management in the state telephone company. “Ours was a modest home, without luxury, but we were not poor. Our home was in the very center of town, and we had coffee growing lands.” Romero’s childhood portrait reveals his family’s relative comfort—no one familiar with poverty in El Salvador would mistake this with an image of the marginalized poor.

7. Romero was shy. The movie “Romero” popularized the view of pre-San Salvador Romero as a bookish introvert. Raul Julia (photo), a large force on the screen, plays a timid, almost cowering Romero. As one critic has stated it, it is “unlikely that Romero was as timid and organizationally inept as he is portrayed in the film.” That critic reasoned, “Timid persons do not get named archbishop anywhere!” In fact, Romero had been a star broadcaster, holding radio audiences in rapt attention since his days as a priest in San Miguel, and he was controversial and outspoken during all of his episcopal career, as much a nuisance to the Left-leaning in the early part of the seventies as he would be to rightwingers after the end of that decade.

Part II: Defamations from the Right

6. Archbishop Romero supported/agitated for armed struggle. Over the years, rightwing Salvadoran politicians have gone as far as to say that Archbishop Romero is to blame for Salvadoran Civil War deaths because he fanned the flames of insurrection. The charge is plainly false, as Romero repeatedly and consistently denounced violence, as we have pointed out here, going as far as to tepidly endorse a military coup d’état in October 1979 to avoid greater bloodshed. He famously rebutted the accusation himself, saying, “We have never preached violence, except the violence of love, which left Christ nailed to a Cross—the violence that we must each do to ourselves to overcome our selfishness and such cruel inequalities among us.” Many are familiar with the famous appeal to the army in Romero’s last Sunday sermon to “stop the repression;” fewer are familiar with his appeal the Sunday before, “to the guerrilla groups,” in which he said: “I appeal to you and ask you to understand that nothing violent can be lasting.” There was still time to make peace, he insisted: “Above all else there is God’s Word, which has cried out to us today: reconciliation! God desires that we be reconciled and so let us be reconciled and we shall make El Salvador a land of sisters and brothers, all children of one Father who waits for us with outstretched arms.”

5. Archbishop Romero was a Communist sympathizer. Another related slander with which to assail and discredit Archbishop Romero has been that he was an ally of communists who wanted to undermine democracy and take over El Salvador. In the height of the Church persecution in El Salvador, the right was crass and audacious in its accusations, saying outright that Romero was a Marxist. They slandered him with the nickname “Marxnulfo,” an adulteration of his middle name, Arnulfo (which his parents gave him because he was born on August 15, the Feast of Saint Arnulf of Metz). As with the accusation that he was fomenting violence, Archbishop Romero consistently denied these characterizations and drew sharp contrasts between his preaching and the tenets of Marxism, which he rejected. As recently as 2008, then vice president of El Salvador Ana Vilma de Escobar told the Salvadoran newspaper El Faro that Archbishop Romero fomented class hatred by selectively emphasizing the repression of the right and turning a blind eye to the abuses of the left. In light of the UN Truth Commission’s findings that over 90% of the killings were the responsibility of the right, Romero’s emphasis seems to have been justified.

Part III: Manipulation of the Left

4. Reagan Administration policies contributed to the Romero assassination. This is a theory that is sometimes advanced, but it is easily and totally refuted: Archbishop Romero was assassinated on March 24, 1980; President Reagan was elected seven months later, on November 4, 1980, and began his term as president on January 20, 1981. So, no Reagan Administration policy could have contributed to or supported any Salvadoran government role in the assassination. In fact, Jimmy Carter was president during all of Archbishop Romero’s ministry, and it was to President Carter that Archbishop Romero directed his famous appeal for the U.S. to discontinue military support to El Salvador. There may be criticisms of the Reagan foreign policy to base on the Romero story, including that Reagan’s policies would have permitted gross human rights abuses like Romero’s murder. The problem that cannot be easily circumvented is that such abuses, including Romero’s murder, not only occurred under a Democratic administration, but they occurred under one which, as Romero chided Carter, had pledged to promote human rights.

3. Archbishop Romero was an adherent of Liberation Theology. This theory started with the right and migrated to the left. It was first advanced by Romero detractors such as Msgr. Freddy Delgado, but it was taken up with aplomb by followers of Liberation Theology who sought to add merit to their movement by claiming Romero as their own. In fact, Romero never cites or refers to mainline Liberation Theologians such as Leonardo Boff, Gustavo Gutiérrez, Manuel Pérez or Carlos Mugica. Romero never studies Liberation Theology directly, but reads about it from sources such as the Opus Dei theologian José María Casciaro, the Franciscan friar Buenaventura Kloppenburg, and the CELAM missionary Segundo Galilea. Instead, Romero draws up his views from his roots in ascetical theology, and in particular from the social doctrine of the Church as taught by Pope Paul VI (the “man who continually illuminates my thinking regarding these aspects”), Cardinal Eduardo Pironio (“a man who enjoys the full confidence of the Pope”), and the social teachings of the modern Popes. The postulator of his canonization cause, Bishop Vincenzo Paglia, maintains that Romero was not a dissident theologian but an faithful advocate of the orthodox social doctrine of the Church.

2. Pope John Paul II was hostile or cold to Romero. There is no denying that the Pope and the Archbishop wrestled with how to strike the right balance in El Salvador, and that John Paul was fed a lot of negative information about Romero that made the Archbishop feel he needed to set the record straight with the Pontiff. But Romero himself insisted that the tone of their interactions was respectful: “He did not scold me as some have said but rather it was a dialogue about criteria,” he said, “like when Paul went up to Jerusalem to speak with Peter about the content of his preaching.” They had two meetings: by Romero's own accounts, at their first meeting, John Paul leaned in and listened intently as Romero made his case, acknowledged the difficulty of Romero’s position and counseled “boldness and prudence” as Romero went forward and, at the end of their last meeting, John Paul embraced Romero and told him that he prayed every day for El Salvador.

1. His dying Eucharistic Prayer exulted “the Voice of Diatribe.” A glaring error in the Spanish language transcription of Archbishop Romero’s final sermon—the one during which he was assassinated—leads to a grotesque misstatement in the English translation. Namely, that, “To Christian faith, at this moment the voice of diatribe appears changed for the body of the Lord, who offered himself for the redemption of the world.” Except that, where the Spanish transcript says “voz de diatribo” (voice of diatribe), Archbishop Romero actually said “Hostia de Trigo” (wheaten Host). (The Word Remains: A Life of Oscar Romero (Orbis, New York, 1999), p. 244. The resulting error bolsters all the erroneous ideas about Romero as a dissident cleric and rebel rouser who equates the holiest sacrament with diatribes and sloganeering, rather than the spiritual minister focused on the religious rite.

La “Oración Patriótica” de Mons. Romero para el Bicentenario

El 5 de noviembre de 1971 el entonces obispo auxiliar de San Salvador, Mons. Oscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdámez, ofreció una homilía cuya pretensión era de ser una “Oración Patriótica … con motivo de la conmemoración del primer grito de independencia y día nacional de acción de gracias”. («Ningún bien es comparable con la auténtica libertad», Semanario Orientación Nº. 1244 Págs. 1 y 8, Domingo, 14 Noviembre 1971, disponible aquí.) Fue un sermón digno de estudiar en este bicentenario ya que la coyuntura histórica de El Salvador en el 2011 es aún más apta para el marco que monseñor comentaba que la realidad que el país vivía cuando pronunció aquel mensaje. En concreto, Mons. Romero predicó en aquella ocasión sobre la libertad, tomando como su referencial la historia de Israel y recordando que en la plenitud de su libertad, fue necesario la intervención de los profetas para interpelar al pueblo en libertad a ejercerla con fidelidad a la alianza con Dios.

Por supuesto, El Salvador en 1971 todavía gemía bajo la corrupción de dictaduras militares, y es la realidad de el Salvador de hoy la más pertinente para comparar con la historia de Israel después de toda la aventura de la esclavitud en Egipto, la liberación del Éxodo, la conducción del pueblo por Moises, el cautiverio de Babilonia y la entrada final a la tierra prometida que mana leche y miel, pero que necesita de la voz de los profetas para asegurar la fidelidad del pueblo a la nueva alianza con Yahvé. Entre líneas, monseñor admite que El Salvador de 1971 no era un modelo perfecto de comparación—reconoce que su libertad iba envuelta en elementos de la mitología: no es “más que una leyenda de nuestro folklore, la figura de aquel eclesiástico salvadoreño (José Matías Delgado) que agitó la campana de La Merced, en la aurora de este día, para anunciar la liberación de Centroamerica”, confiesa. Sin embargo, las exageraciones de la historia no le restan importancia al don de la libertad, predica monseñor, citando al Concilio Vaticano Segundo: “la libertad es el signo eminente de la imagen divina en el hombre”—y a José Simeón Cañas: “no hay bien comparable con la libertad”.

Después de dibujar la comparación entre el ejemplo prototípico de Israel, monseñor llega a inferir que tanto en el ejemplo bíblico como en la actualidad, es necesario ejercer la libertad con responsabilidad, porque la libertad es un don de Dios: “Pero también aprendió [Israel] que esta iniciativa divina está condicionada a la fiel cooperación de los hombres”. Las tribulaciones del desierto y el sufrimiento que Israel vivió son una escuela para inculcar los valores de una sociedad que es fiel a los valores divinos, dice monseñor: “La austeridad de los desiertos donde se templaron la voluntad de aquel caudillo y la fidelidad y solidaridad de aquel pueblo con vocación de libertad es la pedagogía de Dios para enseñar a todos los pueblos que la libertad hay que trabajarla en la austeridad en la solidaridad, en la búsqueda incansable y humilde, en el batallar contra todos los enemigos de esa preciosa dádiva” (compárese Hom. 24 febrero de 1980: “Que sepan unos y otros vivir la austeridad del desierto, que sepan saborear la redención fuerte de la cruz; que no hay alegría más grande que ganarse el pan con el sudor de la frente”).

En este sentido, monseñor predica unas palabras que llegarían a ser proféticas para su propio ministerio arzobispal y quizá puedan tener valor también para nuestro momento:

Era difícil ministerio de los profetas de aquel pueblo: mantener despierta esta conciencia de fidelidad, de cooperación, de solidaridad con el designio libertario de Dios; porque estas actitudes humanas condicionaban el regalo divino de su propia libertad. El reclamo contra las injusticias sociales, contra el libertinaje de las costumbres, contra el abuso del poder, contra el atropello de los derechos y de la dignidad de los hombres, se dirigía a todo el pueblo y llegaba, cuando las circunstancias lo exigían, hasta el trono de los reyes o los palacios de los grandes. No era un espíritu demagógico el que inspiraba aquel mensaje, ni eran desahogos de odios o de violencia inspirados en resentimientos sociales; no buscaba ventajas políticas ni lo inspiraban intereses subversivos. Era el grito de la verdadera liberación que buscaba extirpar los peligros de la verdadera libertad.

La mismas palabras se pueden aplicar ahora retrospectivamente al arzobispado de Mons. Romero y él lo supo anticipar en 1971: “Cualquiera comprende lo difícil de esta misión (profética) que más tarde el Evangelio de Cristo confiará a su Iglesia en medio de todos los pueblos”—incluyendo a aquel futuro Arzobispo de San Salvador.

En aquel momento, Mons. Romero recuerda la abolición de la esclavitud en El Salvador, pero profundiza sobre el tema y lo actualiza con una franqueza extraordinaria y analiza que “nuestra oración de examen de conciencia ... por la fuerza de la lógica y del contraste nos lleva a descubrir en la carencia de tantos bienes nuevas formas de esclavitud”. Y entonces hace la invitación a seguir el camino de la liberación: “nuestra historia”, dice, “con sus gestas libertarias, con sus luchas, sus fracasos y esperanzas, es camino y signo donde Dios se hace encontradizo con el gobierno y con el pueblo de El Salvador para reafirmar su pacto de trabajar en unión con él y con nuestros hermanos la libertad auténtica de nuestra Patria y conducirla a aquella plena liberación que sólo se consuma en Cristo”.

En efecto, en su sermón, monseñor ha sentado fundamentos para lo que será la pastoral de su futuro arzobispado: “Si el Señor no edifica la casa”, dijo, citando el Cantico de los Ascensos del Rey David, “en vano trabajan los que construyen, si el Señor no cuida la ciudad, en vano velan sus centinelas”. ROMERO CASE LANGUISHES UNDER FMLN

When Mauricio Funes Cartagena was elected President of El Salvador in 2009 promising to make Archbishop Romero his “spiritual reference point” for governing, many thought that his coming to power would mean, at long last, justice for the slain prelate, assassinated in March 1980, and overlooked by Salvadoran justice, which, bafflingly, has never brought charges. Such hopes were trimmed when Funes signaled, early on, that he would not seek to lift the protection of the blanket 1993 Amnesty Law, even though it has long been “seen by activists and United Nations experts as the biggest hurdle to achieving respect for human rights” (IPS report).

In fairness, the first leftist government to take office in the post-war period had a full plate of reforms and reparations to tackle, after 20 years of right wing rule in El Salvador, and many pressing current challenges to contend with. Additionally, the Romero legal case is just as thorny and complicated as its ecclesial counterpart (the cause for canonization). To bring a case, the government would have to conduct exhaustive investigations, which never have taken place in El Salvador. It would have to formulate a prosecution that skirts the aforementioned Amnesty Law, and is impermeable to challenges based on statutes of limitations (whereby the time to bring charges for particular violations may have expired), retroactivity (defendants cannot face liability under today’s laws for acts that may have predated their enactment), lost evidence (including witnesses who may have died or ‘disappeared,’ or may otherwise be unavailable or unwilling to testify) and other similar problems that can plague a delayed prosecution. Still, it is sobering to measure the Funes government’s handling of the Romero case against the actions of former governments, which were hopelessly conflicted and lacked credibility on the issue, as their party’s founder (Roberto D’Aubuisson) is the person widely believed to have ordered the assassination.

While the Funes government has made grand symbolic overtures, such as apologizing for the state’s involvement in the assassination, and promising to comply with orders stemming from OAS investigations, these measures are not a substantive departure from the policies of ARENA governments, which also attempted to use symbolic steps, such as petitioning the Vatican to transact Archbishop Romero’s canonization, while avoiding true reddress in the case. The shortcomings of the “change government”’s stances were recently laid bare by statements made by Attorney General Romeo Barahona when questioned regarding the likelihood that he would open an investigation now that a Salvadoran newspaper has published what it claims to be the identify of Romero’s killer, for the first time since the assassination. (Other reports have alleged the involvement of “grand capitalists who today live from their riches as though they did not have hands stained in blood” in ordering the assassination—LA TIMES 3/24/2010) Despite being handed what could be the most significant new evidence in the greatest break-through in the case, Barahona would only say that he “does not rule out” opening a new investigation, but that, “With the information on hand, we would have to analyze and see if it is possible to steer toward a new investigative hypothesis.” (CoLatino 9/28/2011.)

In the aftermath of the revelations about the identify of Romero’s killer, there were calls for the case to be reopened. Archbishop Romero’s brother stated what can only be characterized as a truism when he said in an interview that, “It is necessary, just, and legal for the Attorney General’s Office to investigate,” the shooter in the Romero assassination. (CoLatino 9/27/2011.) The Salvadoran Church has been analyzing whether it should formally ask for a new investigation to be opened. “The Catholic Church would like for the justice system [of El Salvador] to work as in other countries,” said the current Archbishop of San Salvador, Jose Luis Escobar Alas. “I make an appeal for there to be justice, that the responsible institutions operate fully and gain credibility,” he said. (CoLatino 9/26/2011.)

Despite such appeals—and Msgr. Escobar Alas’ words were not constrained to the Romero case alone, but to other crimes from the war period—Attorney General Barahona has made it clear that he takes a much narrower view. After the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court recently ruled that the Attorney General had to answer a lawsuit for the non-investigation of a civilian massacre from 1981 (La Prensa Gráfica 10/21/2011), the Attorney General responded that he would remand the case to the old justice of the peace who had original jurisdiction over the case when it arose. Presumably, a justice of the peace also had jurisdiction over the Romero assassination and other war crimes. It is unclear whether the individual functionaries are still around or how well the Attorney General’s strategy would advance the cause of justice in these cases (the Judge originally assigned to the Romero case fled the country after receiving death threats).

DESPUÉS DEL DILUVIO...LA ALIANZA

Los Grandes Sermones de Mons. Romero

Cuando el sol salió sobre El Salvador después de diez días de lluvia continua en “el diluvio del 2011”, la homilía que predicó Mons. Romero el primer domingo de cuaresma de 1979 parecía muy aplicable a la ocasión. En aquella homilía, monseñor predicó sobre la alianza que Dios hace con Noé después del diluvio universal, una alianza que nos esmera a componer, entre otras cosas, la “ruptura fatal” entre el hombre y la naturaleza. En esta homilía y otras posteriores que siguieron los temas en ella plantados, monseñor desarrolló también el sentido ecológico de la fe.

Recordando el diluvio del libro de Génesis, Mons. Romero explica que el epílogo del diluvio universal “es una expresión bíblica para decir cómo le pesaba a Dios la infidelidad de los hombres”. El diluvio llega como consecuencia negativa de la ruptura de la humanidad con su dios, predicaba monseñor. “La explicación es muy sencilla. Según la revelación de Dios, todo pecado es ruptura. El que peca, desobedece una ley. Esa ruptura con el Legislador Supremo -nuestro Dios-, la desobediencia a sus diez mandamientos, trae consigo consecuencias de rupturas, de consecuencias bien trágicas”. La ruptura con Dios, explica monseñor, conlleva una ruptura con el resto de la humidad, y además una ruptura en el interior de cada persona contra sí misma. “Hay, todavía, otra ruptura fatal: la ruptura contra la naturaleza”. Esta ruptura se remonta hasta el principio de la historia alegórica de la Biblia: “Recuerden cuando Adán, antes del pecado ... dominaba la creación, pero cuando cometió pecado, el desorden de sí mismo, le hace sentir miedo y siente miedo también a las fieras que ya no le obedecen. Toda esta trágica relación del cosmos es consecuencia del pecado”. Aquí Mons. Romero señala cómo el tema se repite en el Nuevo Testamento: “Esto es lo que San Pablo recuerda más allá en la plenitud de los tiempos, que la naturaleza creada por Dios, gime bajo el pecado”, explica.

En contraposición a la ruptura del pecado, después del diluvio, Dios presenta un pacto con la humanidad, cuyo signo es el arco iris que aparece después de la tormenta: “cuando pasa este castigo, Dios siempre ama a pesar de que castiga”. La alianza es una harmonía entre Dios y la humanidad que, “se puede resumir en aquellas palabras que le dice al pueblo dirigido por Moisés: «Yo seré vuestro Dios y vosotros seréis mi pueblo»”. Pero no es una tregua incondicional, sino que conlleva “relaciones recíprocas entre dos partes con los deberes y derechos que se siguen de tal reciprocidad”. Por tanto, el arco iris que señala el Creador como signo de la alianza es un signo que dice: “no volverá a haber más diluvio en la tierra, conservaré la naturaleza pero es necesario trabajar para que haya más justicia”. Desde ya, la humanidad está siendo responsabilizada para llevar adelante sus obligaciones bajo esta alianza: “el recuerdo del arco-iris, como señal de la alianza cósmica de Dios con la humanidad, nos está llevando a revisar cómo utilizamos los bienes de la tierra”.

En la homilía del domingo siguiente, Mons. Romero fue aún más explícito en su explicación de nuestros deberes baja esta alianza: “esa alianza del arco-iris, esa alianza de Dios entregándole al hombre una naturaleza purificada del pecado por el castigo del diluvio, es una alianza que le exige al hombre un respeto a la naturaleza”, detalló. “Ustedes saben que está contaminado el aire, las aguas”, aseveró monseñor: “todo cuanto tocamos y vivimos; y a pesar de esa naturaleza que la vamos corrompiendo cada vez más, y la necesitamos, no nos damos cuenta que hay un compromiso con Dios: de que esa naturaleza sea cuidada por el hombre”. Continuó diciendo que, “Talar un árbol, botar el agua cuando hay tanta escasez de agua; no tener cuidado con las chimeneas de los buses, envenenando nuestro ambiente con esos humos mefíticos; no tener cuidado donde se queman las basuras; todo eso es parte de la alianza con Dios”. En esto, llegó a un punto muy preciso, “en El Salvador tenemos la tasa de población más densa”, y por tanto el riesgo a base de la vulnerabilidad ecológica es especialmente tajante. (Homilía del 11 de marzo de 1979.) Esta predicación profética de Mons. Romero ha sido confirmada por recientes estudios que “dejaron al descubierto la enorme vulnerabilidad que existe en El Salvador”. El mismo año que Mons. Romero planteó estas ponencias, el Caribe y América Central fueron azotadas por el huracán David en septiembre de 1979. Lamentando las perdidas en El Salvador por esa tragedia, Mons. Romero pronunció que, “El huracán tuvo entre nosotros consecuencias muy trágicas”, y en su sentido de historiador, hizo un fiel resumen de ellas. Y después de hacerlo, dijo categóricamente: “Todas esas víctimas, hermanos, no sólo son del temporal, sino que lo triste es que es una situación que delata nuestra manera pobre de vivir”. (Hom. 9 de sept. de 1979.) Esta última observación ponía punto final a lo que había dicho aquel primer domingo de Cuaresma de ese año: “Todos somos causantes del mal que está sufriendo el país. Sólo queremos echar las culpas a otros y no nos miramos [a sí mismos]”.

Post Datum: El domingo 23 de octubre, el obispo auxiliar de San Salvador, monseñor Gregorio Rosa Chávez recogió el tema de la vulnerabilidad del país, señalando que El Salvador “debe luchar contra la vulnerabilidad económica reflejada en la pobreza inmerecida, la vulnerabilidad social caracterizada por la injusticia social y la vulnerabilidad ecológica, de la cual gran culpa recae en la ambición desenfrenada que se enseña contra la creación de Dios”. En un editorial, el P. José María Tojeira, estuvo de acuerdo en que, “la falta de prevención, el desprecio objetivo a la vida de los pobres, la marginación y exclusión en la que se les mantiene, ha sido el factor con mayor peso en el desastre”. UNA HERRAMIENTA NUEVA

Desde ya advertimos que el “Homiliarium” que presentaremos el 18 de octubre y el 20 de noviembre no será una maravilla tecnológica como los “apps” creados por Steve Jobs, pero sí brindará una herramienta para navegar más cómodamente una densa información en nuestra era cibernética. La imagen en la parte superior presenta una idea del formato que tendrá la tabla al relacionar la fecha litúrgica (1° domingo de Adviento, 2° domingo de Adviento, etc.) con el ciclo correspondiente del leccionario (A, B, C). Para cada fecha (por ejemplo, 11/27/1977) habrá enlaces al texto de la homilía de Mons. Romero (en este caso, para el 1° domingo de Adviento en el Ciclo A del leccionario litúrgico) en español, en inglés, al audio original, y a sitios con los textos bíblicos para ese día, en español y en inglés.

Ofrecer estos elementos no será en si un gran aporte: todos estos elementos ya están en línea en otros sitios web. De hecho, el “Homiliarium” no hará más que enviar a las personas que pulsen sobre sus enlaces a aquellos sitios que ya ofrecen ese contenido: Servicios Koinonia para los textos de las homilías en español; la británica Romero Trust para los textos de las homilías en inglés, y los audios también; Easterbrooks Catholic Calendar para las lecturas correspondientes en inglés, etc. (De hecho, Servicios Koinonia ya tiene un Calendario Litúrgico que incorpora homilías de Mons. Romero a su agenda de lecturas.) La diferencia será que el “Homiliarium” presentará la información completa en su solo lugar, integrando textos, audios, y lecturas en dos idiomas—y tal vez en un futuro, otras lenguas también—en una sola tabla universal.

Este esquema cuadra con la filosofía de este blog de ser una antesala para otros sitios que ofrecen materia prima, fuentes oficiales y sitios autorizados. Este blog no pretende ser más que un pobre intérprete de la información que esos otros sitios más fidedignos pueden aportar. Esperamos agregar esta nueva herramienta a las otras herramientas que ya hemos desarrollado para llevar adelante nuestra pretensión. Estas otras herramientas incluyen el sistema de farolitos de color para indicar el progreso de la causa de beatificación; nuestro balance anual del progreso de la causa; nuestro análisis de las siete últimas homilías; nuestro análisis ocasional de los “grandes sermones” de Mons. Romero; nuestra evaluación anual de las 10 noticias sobresalientes; el índice del blog, etc.

Pero aún así, nos atrevemos a atribuir alguna ligera importancia a esta iniciativa. Como preguntaba Mons. Ricardo Urioste, ¿en qué otro caso más que el de Mons. Romero se puede concebir que “la gente esté estudiando las homilías de un obispo que ha estado muerto 25 años?” (Robert McClory, Romero llamado un ‘profeta de la esperanza, NATIONAL CATHOLIC REPORTER, 15 de abril del 2005.) Con esta nueva herramienta, la gente no solo podrá estudiar las homilías de Mons. Romero, sino también compararlas con las homilías de sus pastores cada domingo, y estos podrán consultar las homilías de Mons. Romero sobre cada lectura bíblica que les toque comentar, de antemano, como también los fieles podrán comparar lo que Romero predica en tres ciclos diferentes de la liturgia—y todo esto desde una sola tabla que contendrá tres años de predicación accesibles en un solo vistazo.

Nos sentimos muy conformes con nuestro proyecto e invitamos todos sus comentarios y sugerencias para mejorar el diseño y alcance del mismo mientras preparamos las tablas correspondientes.

COMING ATTRACTIONS

In the next couple of months, this blog will publish a new tool for studying Archbishop Romero that will collate and correlate already-existing online sources in one review tool to allow a new way of looking at Archbishop Romero’s sermons. We are calling the new index a “Homiliarium” and it will be in essence a table that indexes the homilies from Oscar Romero’s three years as archbishop into a single chart of the liturgical cycles that those homilies correspond to. This will allow the reader, for example, to compare Romero’s Easter 1977 sermon to the Easter 1978 and Easter 1979 sermons by clicking on links in a table with matching items next to one another.

The Homiliarium will permit homilists, scholars and anyone who is interested, to find Romero’s sermon’s for a particular Sunday or for an appointed reading from Scripture and thus, show, in ways not shown by previous arrangements, the ordering schemes and thematic progression of Romero’s preaching. The initial table will be published on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 (the Feast of Saint Luke the evangelist). This table will contain Romero’s Sunday sermons arranged by liturgical cycle. The Church divides all the lectionary readings into three cycles—A, B, and C—which coincides with Romero’s three years as archbishop, such that the entirety of his opus would fill three complete cycles and thus provide a homily for every liturgical occasion.

A Supplement to the Homiliarium will be published here on Sunday, November 20, 2011 (the Solemnity of Christ the King), which marks the end of the current liturgical cycle and this will complete the publication of the project. The Supplement will be an index of miscellaneous homilies which do not fit into the Sunday sermon pattern—including funeral services and masses that Archbishop Romero said for other occasions. Both the Homiliarium and the annex will contain links to the texts of the sermons in English and in Spanish, links to audio of the sermons where available, and links to the appointed readings for each date in the index. So, if someone wanted to compare what their pastor said on Sunday to Romero’s preaching on the same Sunday readings, or—more importantly—if a preacher wanted to refer to Romero’s homily ahead of time in preparing his sermon—the Homiliarium would provide an easy reference tool for looking up any homily from Romero’s magisterium as archbishop.

In creating this reference tool for everyone, we are following the maxim that it is far better to do something about a problem than to simply gripe and complain about it. The “problem” here is the perception among some Church leaders that Romero followers do not pay enough attention to the spiritual aspects of his ministry, and the related concern that, despite their being available online both in English and in Spanish, Romero’s sermons are still overlooked by many. On both counts, the Homiliarium will provide a tool to address these concerns. First, the Homiliarium will make it plain for all to see how Romero’s preaching was driven by a liturgical calendar and the assigned readings from Scripture in the lectionary, and will allow the faithful to read Romero not just as a sociological exercise, but in conjunction with their spiritual practices. Secondly, the Homiliarium will provide quick thumbnail view over all of Romero’s sermons at once and a method for navigating them.

¿QUIÉN MATÓ A MONS. ROMERO?

Tanto la información generada por informes históricos como aquella revelada por investigaciones periodísticas más recientes revela el esquema del complot para asesinar a Mons. Romero. El mayor Roberto D’Aubuisson, fundador del partido ARENA, y Mario Molina, hijo de una familia del partido PCN (ambos de derecha), impulsaron el operativo, con personal del equipo de seguridad de D’Aubuisson, incluyendo al organizador, el capitán Álvaro Saravia (equipo D’Aubuisson) y al tirador, el subsargento Marino Samayoa Acosta (equipo Molina). Pero todos estos detalles nos remontan a la sencilla pregunta: ¿Quién mató a Mons. Romero?

Según información aportada a los medios, estos personajes ya conocidos solo representan el frontispicio de la confabulación secreta para exterminar a la máxima voz de denuncia en la era de las dictaduras militares en que personajes como el mayor D’Aubuisson, el subsargento Samayoa, el capitán Saravia, y el coronel Arturo Armando Molina eran los centinelas de un grupo de poder dispuesto a defender su privilegio a toda costa. El periódico L.A. Times publicó declaraciones que han sido poco publicitadas, pero que merecen mayor escrutinio ante las más recientes revelaciones, por un ex miembro del equipo de seguridad de D’Aubuisson. Según este auxiliar anónimo de D’Aubuisson, el ex líder de los escuadrones de la muerte habría recibido las ordenes de ultimar a Mons. Romero desde “los sectores económicos más poderosos del país”. (A. Renderos, El Salvador reconoce asesinato de Mons. Romero por primera vez, L.A. TIMES, 24 de marzo del 2010.)

De acuerdo a ese informe, D’Aubuisson “recibía, casi a diario, desde las elites financieras, una lista de personas que querían que fueran eliminadas”, y “el mayor siempre estudiaba la lista detenidamente antes de dar la orden de ejecutar”. Esto no quiere restarle responsabilidad o importancia al papel protagónico que jugó D’Aubuisson en el complot, ya que según la fuente D’Aubuisson hizo el análisis final: “El mayor estaba claro que asesinar a Romero tendría un alto costo político”, y no obstante, optó por dar la orden de asesinar. Pero la fuente anónima insistió en que la conspiración alcanzó a los más altos niveles del poder económico del país: “Estos son los grandes capitalistas que hoy viven de sus riquezas como si no tuvieran las manos manchadas de sangre”.

La participación de un grupo de personas extenso en la miserable conspiración puede explicar la falta de voluntad en las cúpulas del poder por hacer una investigación en un caso de interés universal, y todas las trampas y obstáculos que se han puesto ante cada esfuerzo de llevar a la justicia. Como también le presta profundidad a la frase que TIME Magazine atribuye a Mons. Romero en el instante de su muerte: “Que Dios tenga misericordia de los asesinos”. HOLY ‘WHODUNNIT’

In which we ask: If a martyr is killed, does the killer’s actual identity matter for the purpose of raising the martyr to the honor of the altars? It matters in the case of Óscar Romero, according to Bishop Gregorio Rosa Chávez, a Salvadoran cleric familiar with Archbishop Romero’s beatification process. “When we were starting the process,” Bishop Rosa says, the Vatican “asked us three questions: who killed him, why, and the context in which he served as Archbishop of San Salvador.” He adds, “Who killed him was the only question we were unable to answer,” at the time. New information published in El Salvador in the last days would answer that question, purporting to establish that National Guard Deputy Sargeant Marino Samayoa Acosta was the shadowy figure who pulled the trigger on that fateful evening of March 24, 1980, having been selected for the job by a man named Mario Molina, who was the son of Arturo Armando Molina, a Salvadoran army colonel who assumed the presidency under widespread allegations of fraud. The new information appears to complete the factual findings in Saravia v. Doe, a 2004 U.S. federal case in which Capt. Álvaro Saravia was found liable, in absentia, for his “role in coordinating and planning the assassination of Archbishop Romero,” and in a U.N. Truth Commission Report which found that, “Former Major Roberto D’Aubuisson gave the order to assassinate the Archbishop and gave precise instructions to members of his security service (including Saravia), acting as a ‘death squad’, to organize and supervise the assassination.”

But, why does the killer’s identity matter for purposes of canonization? The canon law requirements to establish a martyrdom can be boiled down to three elements: (1) a cruel or violent death; (2) that the victim freely accepted; (3) imposed out of hatred of the faith («odium fidei, uti fertur»). WOESTMAN, Canonization: Theology, History, Process 143 (St. Paul University, 2002). In the Romero case, the first two points are undisputed and the sticking point is «odium fidei», which happens to be the most important element. To some observers, the Romero assassination is factually indistinguishable from an ordinary political assassination, and church leaders complain that the lionization in some quarters of Archbishop Romero as a purely political hero does nothing to dispel that impression.

The Church recognizes that “the cultural contexts of martyrdom and the strategies” of the persecutors in modern times “seldom explicitly show their aversion to the Christian faith … but simulate different reasons, for example, of a political or social nature,” for their killings. (Pope Benedict XVI to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.) Nevertheless, it is still “necessary” to prove the element of «odium», “directly or indirectly but always in a morally certain way.” (Id.) The killer’s identity might help establish the existence of this «odium», since the question nowadays almost invariably turns on expert studies of the circumstances of the martyrdom. WOESTMAN, supra, 58. Presumably, the existence of hard, established facts would enable the experts to pin their hypotheses on solid foundations so that their conclusions are reliable and withstand scrutiny as well as the test of time. And this explains Bishop Rosa’s invitation to Romero’s killer to approach the Church and provide details of the plot. “I encourage this friend, this brother, that we should try to reach the end, for the good of his conscience. He needs to be at peace with himself and with God, and at peace with the nation,” he said.

“The Church has forgiven all, but the truth we cannot do without.”

MONS. ROMERO y JOSÉ MATÍAS DELGADO

El Presbítero y Doctor José Matías Delgado es conocido como el más venerado de de los próceres de El Salvador, declarado “Benemérito de la Patria” por la Asamblea, y la Orden Nacional José Matías Delgado es la condecoración más destacada que sea otorgada por la República de El Salvador. El sacerdote Delgado, quien vivió entre 1767 y 1832, se destacó como un líder nacional en los días de la independencia, en un sentido impresionantemente similar al cual Mons. Romero fue un clérigo destacado en los tiempos del conflicto armado de la historia reciente de El Salvador, y que es ahora reconocido como “el salvadoreño más universal”. Todo esto lleva a un comentador a preguntar (sobre Delgado, y nosotros extendemos la pregunta al caso Mons. Romero)—“¿Por qué un cura, no un general, está en la cumbre de tantas menciones nacionales?” (Roberto Turcios, Delgado, EL FARO, 29 de mayo de 2011.)

Las similitudes entre los dos personajes encajan desde el hecho de que los dos son hombres de la Iglesia quienes se prestan en su momento a las necesidades de la historia del pueblo y al hacerlo rompen esquemas, asumiendo un rol similar al de los grandes liberadores nacionales. Pero después de las similitudes vienen las diferencias, y la más importante de estas es que, José Matías Delgado abiertamente aceptó posiciones políticas en el gobierno de su república rebelde, y agitó como un líder en un movimiento netamente político (firmó el Acta de la Independencia y fungió como intendente de San Salvador y presidente del Congreso Nacional, entre otras), mientras que Mons. Romero, no obstante las acusaciones de sus detractores, se limitó a una actuación pastoral. “La Iglesia no puede identificarse con ningún partido político ni con ninguna organización de carácter político, social, cooperativo”, insistía. “La Iglesia no tiene sistemas, la Iglesia no tiene métodos, la Iglesia sólo tiene inspiración cristiana … yo no soy director de ninguna organización política. Yo no soy, ni mis sacerdotes deben de ser, líderes de estos grupos”. (Homilía del 16 de abril de 1978.) Mons. Romero no llegó al nivel de participación activa de José Matías Delgado y, así, evitó la reprimenda que dio el Papa a Ernesto Cardenal por su participación en el gobierno sandinista en contravención de las prohibiciones vaticanas.

Quizá más importante aún, José Matías Delgado trató de impulsar su ambición de ser obispo de San Salvador a través de sus conexiones políticas, e intentó superar la oposición del arzobispo de Guatemala por medio del derecho de patronato, o sea por el apoyo de las familias de poder locales. Fue solamente cuando el Papa le mandó una carta amenazando con declararlo cismático que el sacerdote Delgado abandonó su afán por llegar a ser el obispo encargado de San Salvador (que el siglo siguiente correspondería a Mons. Romero). Mons. Romero, por otra parte, predicaba que, “El verdadero obispo, el verdadero párroco, el Papa auténtico y único, es aquel que haya entrado por la puerta que es Cristo”. (Hom. 16 de abril de 1978, Ibid.) Para Mons. Romero, la piedra de toque para medir la autoridad de un clérigo era muy sencilla: “Si estoy en comunión con el obispo y ese obispo está en comunión con el Papa, no hay duda”. (Hom. 25 de noviembre de 1977.)

La última distinción entre Mons. Romero y José Matías Delgado es el alcance de la liberación que buscó cada uno de estos gigantes. “La historia de El Salvador, con sus próceres, con su política, con sus propias lacras, con sus propias cosas buenas”, predicaba Mons. Romero, “es donde Dios quiere encontrarse con los salvadoreños y salvarlos”. (Hom. 7 de agosto de 1977.) Pero, para Mons. Romero, la Independencia de los próceres, “el primer grito de independencia” era como “el primer grito de un dolor de parto, porque no acaba de parir la verdadera libertad”. Los logros de la revolución “no llamaríamos independencia, pero sí que marca en la historia un punto de partida hacia una verdadera independencia”, consideraba Monseñor. El periódico salvadoreño DIARIO CO-LATINO ha publicado una nota investigativa en la que señala al subsargento de la extinta Guardia Nacional de ese país, Marino Samayoa Acosta, como el francotirador responsable del asesinato de Monseñor Óscar A. Romero el 24 de marzo de 1980. Según la nota, el francotirador fue sugerido por Mario Molina, hijo del Coronel Arturo Armando Molina, que fue presidente de la república entre 1972 y 1977. Este último dato concuerda con lo dicho por el capitán Álvaro Saravia en otra nota periodística publicada el año pasado.

Según la nota de CO-LATINO, el periódico recibió la información de “fuentes que estuvieron próximas a los círculos de[l Mayor Roberto] d’Aubuisson”, fundador del partido político ARENA, y el acusado de ser el autor intelectual del crimen. Aunque varios datos sobre el asesinato han sido revelados por investigaciones llevadas a cabo por entes internacionales incluyendo una Comisión de la Verdad de la ONU, la falta de una investigación penal judicial en El Salvador ha impedido el descubrimiento de algunos hechos principales, incluyendo la identidad del tirador que con un solo disparo certero acabara la vida del popular arzobispo. A través de los años, se han ventilado varias teorías sobre la identidad del pistolero, y el tiempo dirá si esta nueva hipótesis llega a ser aceptada.

Uno de los conspiradores, Amado Garay, había dado una descripción del tirador como un hombre joven, barbado, de entre 25 y 27 años, quien le reportaría a Saravia, “misión cumplida”. El hombre señalado por CO-LATINO nació el 8 de octubre de 1949 y por ende tendría 30 años de edad a la fecha del asesinato, y 61 años hoy día. El reportaje investigativo del periódico salvadoreño EL FARO del año pasado que reveló el paradero del capitán Álvaro Saravia, así como mayores detalles de su participación en el asesinato de Mons. Romero, quedó en segundo lugar para el Premio Latinoamericano de Periodismo de Investigación, 2010-2011, que organiza el Instituto de Prensa y Sociedad (IPYS) y Transparencia Internacional. De esta manera, el periodista Carlos Dada, de EL FARO, autor de “Así matamos a monseñor Romero”, puede reclamar un premio de $10,000.

El reportaje publicado el 22 de Marzo de 2010, reveló cómo se planeó y ejecutó uno de los crímenes políticos más impactantes de la historia de El Salvador a partir de las confesiones de uno de los perpetradores (Saravia). Se necesitó de una gran persistencia para ubicar y convencer al prófugo de la justicia, que había sido ya sentenciado por un tribunal estadounidense a pagar un monto millonario por su participación en el asesinato, para que confesara cómo se fraguó el crimen. “Para encontrar a Saravia hay que bajar al infierno”, reportaba el periodista Dada al describir el miserable escondrijo del otrora matón e imponente. Ahora, Saravia “vive en una pequeña casa de bahareque, con ventanas de madera sin vidrio y con apenas tres prendas de vestir colgadas de una pita que atraviesa el cuarto”, seguía el reportaje.

Irónicamente, Saravia se había convertido en uno de los hombres miserables y pobres a quienes Mons. Romero murió defendiendo. Dada citó a Saravia estas escalofriantes palabras: “¡La peor desgracia del mundo! ¡La pobreza! ¿Cómo no iba a ser guerrillero el hombre si estaba viendo que sus hijos se estaban muriendo de hambre?” Y procede Saravia a desempacar el rollo de revelaciones:

La publicación del reportaje estremecedor en pleno trigésimo aniversario del asesinato conmovió a la sociedad salvadoreña. El sitio web de EL FARO se cayó por tres días por la sobreabundancia de visitas al sitio. El reportaje fue traducido al inglés y difundido por varios medios. Desgraciadamente, igual que la justicia salvadoreña el periodismo local ha ignorado casi totalmente el caso Mons. Romero, y en ese contexto “Así matamos a monseñor Romero” ha sido una obra magna, contundente y abrumadora. Ojala que el galardón esmere a otros a intentar un periodismo audaz en el futuro.

According to a front page story in a Salvadoran newspaper, T-shirts bearing the likeness of Archbishop Romero are second only to those with the emblems of the most popular soccer teams in terms of sales in El Salvador, and the reporters were able to visit six factories churning out Romero tees for the local markets. Jaime Ulises Marinero, Empleos, negocios e instrumentalización ideológica en nombre de Monseñor Romero [Jobs, businesses and ideological manipulation in the name of Archbishop Romero], LA PÁGINA, August 29, 2011. The article cited a merchant in a downtown market who said that, “The image of Archbishop Romero is imposing. It is rare these days to find a Christmas crèche that does not include his figurine. The people demand it.” The story quoted an economist as saying that at least a thousand Salvadorans earn their living from working at ONG’s bearing Romero’s name.

Archbishop Romero also is present in people’s conscience as El Salvador faces a wave of gang related violence. A recent piece in an influential paper cataloguing the bloodshed began with a haunting Romero quote: “The name of the violence will change,” Romero had said, “but there will always be violence as long as we do not change the root that sprouts such horrendous things into our reality.” Roberto Valencia, Yo Violada [I, violated], EL FARO, July 24, 2011. More recently, the same newspaper published an extended interview with Archbishop Romero’s younger brother, Gaspar. Roberto Valencia and Mauro Arias, “Como decía mi hermano, monseñor Romero: yo quisiera cumplida y pronta justicia” ["As my brother, Archbishop Romero, used to say—I should like complete and prompt justice"], EL FARO, August 8, 2010. Coming around the time of Romero’s would-be 94th birthday, and the Salvadoran Supreme Court’s ruling that the suspects of the 1989 Jesuit Massacre in San Salvador need not be held for extradition, the sentiment had special resonance. Gaspar Romero also provided a prophetic message from the archbishop on the current crisis: “he told me, ‘The war cannot be prevented ... what is coming will be terrible, but what comes after the war will be even worse’.”

But, it isn’t only in El Salvador that Romero is remembered. In a new documentary called “El cielo abierto” ["The Open Sky"] (click here for trailer—in Spanish), Mexican filmmaker Everardo Gonzalez attempts to paint a fresh depiction of Archbishop Romero’s story. “Gonzalez paints an absorbing portrait of the prelate's exceptional heroism,” states one review, “using a large number of talking heads, edited together with a wealth of chilling images.” The Open Sky, reviewed by Jay Weissberg, VARIETY magazine, May 26, 2011. And in Italy, Ettore Masina has published a third edition of his 1996 original biography, “L'arcivescovo deve morire” ["The Archbishop Must Die"]. Masina paints Romero as a meek man, armed with an iron will, who conducts a lonely struggle against the indifference and even hostility of his fellow churchmen, to denounce the massacres of his people. Throughout the year, this blog has discussed important developments in the understanding of Romero stemming from the publication of previously unknown photographs, of previously unpublished Romero articles and op eds, from a Wikileaks cable, and from historic U.S. Embassy cables published this year. All together, all the activities and developments surrounding Archbishop Romero (oh, and did we mention that a U.S. president visited Romero’s grave this year?) underscore that something is happening with Romero: his figure is seeping into the popular imagination in ways that we may not fully realize.

CORTE SUPREMA DE JUSTICIA

En 1978, Mons. Romero tuvo un fuerte enfrentamiento con la Corte Suprema de Justicia de El Salvador sobre la falta de seguimiento que la Corte daba a los atropellos de los militares, y por la mala fe con que la Corte interpretaba la ley para favorecer a los victimarios. (James BROCKMAN, Romero: A Life [Romero, Una Vida] (Orbis, Nueva York, 1989), págs. 121-125.) Monseñor expresó su indignación por que la Corte dejara en la impunidad los asesinatos de sacerdotes:

¿Hasta cuándo vamos a estar soportando estos crímenes sin ninguna reivindicación de justicia?. ¿Dónde está la justicia en nuestra patria?. ¿Dónde está la Corte Suprema de Justicia?. ¿Dónde está el honor de nuestra democracia si han de morir así las gentes como perros, y se quedarán sin investigar las muertes como la del P. Rafael [Palacios]?

El choque entre la denuncia de Mons. Romero y la indiferencia de la Corte había explotado un año atrás, cuando Monseñor había lamentado el vacío notable en el rol de la Corte como una agencia de justicia ante los atropellos. “Yo pienso, hermanos”, comentaba Monseñor, “ante estas injusticias que se ven por aquí y por allá, hasta en la Primera Cámara y en muchos juzgados de pueblos, ¡ya no digamos jueces que se venden! ¿Qué hace la Corte Suprema de Justicia?” Esta llamada de atención molestó tanto a la Corte que su Secretario giró un oficio al arzobispado insinuando que Mons. Romero había difamado al Tribunal, y dejando abierta la posibilidad de alguna consecuencia legal para Monseñor por la supuesta infracción.

Mons. Romero contestó a esta maniobra en su Homilía de Pentecostés de 1978. En su respuesta, Monseñor hace un equilibrio delicado entre lo jurídico y lo teológico, evitando caer en una trampa legal que sería manipulada por sus detractores, y aprovechando del suspenso creado por el enfrentamiento. “Yo sé que es grande la expectativa, ¿qué va a decir el Arzobispo ante el emplazamiento de la Corte Suprema de Justicia?”, reconoce Mons. Romero. (Hom. 14 de mayo de 1978.) “Por de pronto quiero decirles que la Suprema Corte ha sido hoy el signo de Dios para atraer la atención del pueblo”, dijo, introduciendo el tema.

En palabras mesuradas y respetuosas, Mons. Romero no retrocedió de su crítica, la que tildó de llevar sentido de «animus corrigendi» (espíritu de corregir), y reiteró su denuncia. “¿Dónde está el papel trascendental de una democracia de este Poder que debía de estar por encima de todos los poderes y reclamar la justicia a todo aquel que lo atropella?”, preguntó de nuevo—citando textualmente sus palabras en la Homilía que había molestado a la Corte. “Yo creo que gran parte del malestar de nuestra Patria tiene allí su clave principal”, decía Monseñor. “En el Presidente y en todos los colaboradores de la Corte Suprema de Justicia, que con más entereza debería de exigir a las Cámaras, a los juzgados, a los jueces, a todos los administradores de esa palabra sacrosanta: LA JUSTICIA, que de verdad sean agentes de justicia.”

Elevando un poco el tono, Monseñor censuró el “desprecio absoluto de la Honorable Corte Suprema de Justicia, por las obligaciones que la Constitución Política le impone, la cual todos sus miembros se han obligado a cumplir”. Aquí, Mons. Romero rechazó implícitamente la argumentación de que los abusos se deberían olvidar para fomentar la paz, declarando que la paz solo puede surgir a base de la justicia: “esta Iglesia del Espíritu Santo viene proclamando desde los lejanos tiempos de Isaías, y hoy lo repito con la renovada juventud de este Pentecostés, en medio de la dramática realidad de nuestro país «La Paz sólo puede ser el producto de la justicia» (Is. 3 2, 1 7)”. Repitió la frase en Latín, que era el lema de Pio XII: «Opus justitiae pax», y aseveró que, “si verdaderamente existiera un interés social en el manejo de la cosa pública los hechos serían investigados exhaustivamente, con el fin de lograr un verdadero y auténtico bienestar social, así como para sentar precedentes”.

Mons. Romero volvió al tema de la justicia en su “última homilía” en la que rechaza “las visiones falsas de la tierra que el hombre ha tenido según sus intereses”, incluyendo “las que hacen de la Seguridad Nacional [que transforman al hombre a] un servidor del estado como si el estado fuera el señor y el hombre el esclavo, cuando es al revés, no es el hombre para el estado sino el estado para el hombre”. (Hom. 23 de marzo de 1980.) “La ley”, decía, “tiene que ser un servicio a la dignidad humana y no los falsos legalismos con los cuales se pisotea la honradez, muchas veces, de las personas”. Puntualmente, insistió: “No queramos, por salvar la Constitución del país cuando se ha pisoteado por todos lados, llamarla; y a ella se le quiere usar más bien para defender nuestros egoísmos personales. La ley para el hombre, no el hombre para la ley.” (Id.)

Al siguiente día fue asesinado y hoy, desde su martirio relegado a la impunidad, Mons. Romero sigue denunciando el “desprecio absoluto” de la Corte Suprema de Justicia al clamor de las víctimas por una reivindicación.

THE SUN OF THE TRANSFIGURED ONE

On August 6, 1978, Archbishop Romero preached the sermon on the Feast of the Transfiguration, the Church's commemoration of the moment when Jesus reveals his messianic mission to his closest disciples, becoming enveloped in divine light while meditating on the top of a mountain. (Matthew 17:1-9) It is the national patronal feast of El Salvador.

“It seems to me that never before has the nation been more beautiful than today when she is bathed in the light of the sun of the [Transfigured] One,” Romero said, alluding to the Gospel account (“His face shone like the sun”). “We remember first of all the primary origin of this beautiful landscape of our country,” he said, describing the pre-Christian El Salvador like an Eden, beautiful, but untamed. “The sin of humanity submitted nature to slavery, selfishness and passions,” he said, “but in Christ we find the hope of restoration.” By allowing Salvadorans to view their country's original, natural beauty through a moral filter, Christianity's guiding light, Romero said, “enables us to see as never before the marvels of our volcanoes, lakes, rivers, plains and seas.” In the Transfigured Christ, Romero prayed, “we find the true meaning of our life, for you guide our history. You are the Word through whom God created all things and in whom God redeemed the enslaved world.”

That introduction to his Sermon on that August Sunday (the same day that Pope Paul VI passed away in Rome) summarized Romero's preaching on the Feast of the Transfiguration, which he would later call his “Transfiguration Theology,” and which we have offered as an alternative and more accurate description of Romero's social teachings than the phrase “Liberation theology.” In Romero's exegesis, Christ calls on his followers--including nations--to be transfigured; to be lifted up from sin and material desires to the dignity of the Children of God, and accept suffering and sacrifice as the birth pangs of a more just world which does not represent Heaven on earth, but the antechamber to Paradise.

“No me cabe duda de que su persona merece la beatificación”, dijo el Papa Benedicto XVI (pontificado: 2005-presente) al ser preguntado sobre la causa de canonización de Óscar Romero. (Il Papa e la Santa Sede [El papa y la Santa Sede], Radio Vaticana, 9 de mayo del 2007.) “Ciertamente, monseñor Romero fue un gran testigo de la fe”, aseveró el pontífice, “un hombre de gran virtud cristiana, que se comprometió en favor de la paz y contra la dictadura, y que fue asesinado durante la celebración de la misa”. Como papa en su carta encíclica «CARITAS IN VERITATE» (2009), reconoce que “la doctrina social de la Iglesia ... es anuncio y testimonio de la fe” (CIV, ibid., ¶ 15); que “se ve impedida en muchos casos por prohibiciones y persecuciones” y que es “atestiguada por los Santos y por cuantos han dado la vida por Cristo Salvador en el campo de la justicia y la paz” (Ibid., ¶ 11).

El Papa declara que la persecución de un campeón de la doctrina social de la Iglesia puede conllevar al martirio no obstante que “han cambiado los contextos culturales del martirio y las estrategias ‘ex parte persecutoris’ [de la parte persecutora], que cada vez trata de manifestar de modo menos explícito su aversión a la fe cristiana ... La Iglesia no se fija en los pretextos que interponen los asesinos, sino en “el motivo que impulsa al martirio”, que “sigue siendo el mismo y tiene en Cristo su fuente y modelo”. (Mensaje, Ibid.) Mons. Romero encaja perfectamente en el concepto de martirio expuesto por Benedicto, incluyendo todo el discurso de lo que es y no es una expresión válida de la liberación cristiana. They were two laborers in the vineyards of the Lord; one born in a sleepy corner of one of the tiniest countries in the New World and, the other, born three years later in an emerging Central European Old World town. Yet God had a plan to bring them together, when history catapulted both to the world stage at the end of the 1970s when Karol Wojtyla of Wadowice, Poland, emerged as the Blessed John Paul II (pontificate: 1978-2005) and Oscar Romero as Archbishop of San Salvador. This is a series on Romero’s fidelity to the popes and their social teachings.

The Salvadoran martyr and the Polish pope were the “two ships”—of Longfellow’s poem—“that greet each other with flashing lights and then sail off into the night.” Much has already been written about the historic encounter when John Paul emerged from a Church oppressed by the totalitarian Left and encountered Romero, persecuted by the oligarchic Right, and compared notes. Or, as Archbishop Romero characterized their tête à tête: they “dialogued about criteria,” like St. Peter and St. Paul (February 10, 1980 Homily.) The first time John Paul met Archbishop Romero, he had been Pope for six months, and the information he had been given was heavily biased toward a negative assessment, reflecting the views of Romero’s government critics. The two met a second time less than a year later, leaving Romero feeling that the Pope had heard him out. John Paul would soon become convinced that Romero had been a true servant of the Church and, later, a martyr.

Despite having received the backing of Pope Paul VI (“You are in charge!”), Romero knew that his enemies were bombarding the Vatican with a damning view of his spiritual leadership of the San Salvador Church. Romero moved quickly to reach out to the new Pope—an outsider—sending a six page letter less than a month after the Pope was installed. Despite his “ ‘conservative’ inclinations,” Romero wrote John Paul, “I believed it my duty to take a positive stand in defense of my Church and ... at the side of my oppressed and abused people.” (James BROCKMAN, Romero: A Life. New York: Orbis Books, 1989, p. 145). He also laid out before John Paul the doctrinal bases for his pastoral line. “In all of my actions,” he wrote, “I have prayed for much light from the Holy Spirit so as not to depart from the Gospel or the guidelines of Vatican Council II or the authorized documents of Medellin.” (BROCKMAN, Ibid.)

In 1979, Romero traveled to Rome to attend a beatification ceremony and greeted John Paul at the Pope’s weekly general audience. “When I told him my name and my responsibility here in El Salvador,” Romero recounted, “he told me that he hoped to speak with me in private.” (May 13, 1979 Hom.) A few days later, “the Holy Father showed me his goodness by receiving me in a private audience,” Romero said. (Ibid.) At their face to face meeting, John Paul gave the embattled Romero “his words of consolation and comfort,” telling him, “ ‘I understand that the situation in which you have to carry out your ministry is very difficult, very difficult’.” (Ibid.) John Paul heard Romero out. “A gesture of his has remained engraved in my heart,” Romero said: “the attention with which Pope John Paul II listens: When he had finished his sentences and I began to speak, he ... leaned closer to me to listen to my words, to understand what I was saying.” (Ibid.) He also gave the archbishop candid advice: “ ‘Be prudent! Be careful! But also have the courage to denounce those serious situations! You must also do this’.” (Ibid.)

Still cognizant of the one sided reports John Paul was getting through official sources, Romero handed the Pope four reports of foreign commissions investigating El Salvador, including one by the Organization of American States which confirmed the persecution of the Salvadoran Church, as well as letters of solidarity in support of Romero, and additional memos by Romero, which John Paul accepted. (BROCKMAN, Supra., 166-167.) Romero returned to El Salvador feeling validated by John Paul, and would cite his encouragement to defend his pastoral line: “just like John Paul II told me: ‘boldness and prudence’.” (July 20, 1979 Hom.) In fact, Romero cited John Paul repeatedly to demonstrate the validity of his actions: facing criticisms that he was too involved in politics, Romero was happy to highlight “The Pope’s travels to six countries, his participation in the Conference of Latin American Bishops, his visit to the United Nations, his messages to government leaders in which he spoke on behalf of those persons who are dispossessed, as well as about peace and human rights.” (December 23, 1979 Hom.) On doctrinal matters, Romero declared his complete adherence to John Paul’s pastoral line. (See, e.g., April 22, 1979, March 9, 1980 homilies).

Pope John Paul and Archbishop Romero met again in January 1980, less than a year after their first encounter. Romero refuted the charge by some that the tone of the meeting was hostile: “He did not scold me as some have said but rather it was a dialogue about criteria,” he said, “like when Paul went up to Jerusalem to speak with Peter about the content of his preaching.” (February 1980 Hom., Supra.) The Pope encouraged Romero: “ ‘Continue to defend social justice and promote love for those who are poor’.” (Ibid.) But he warned him to be careful about possible ideological entanglements. Romero assured the Pope that he was mindful of the need for balance and Romero felt that John Paul approved of everything he said. (BROCKMAN, Supra., 225.) At the end of the meeting, John Paul embraced Romero and told him that he prayed every day for El Salvador. “I felt here God’s confirmation and his force for my poor ministry,” Romero wrote. (Ibid.)

That March, Archbishop Romero declared, “My sisters and brothers, the greatest glory of a pastor is to live in communion with the Pope.” (March 2, 1980 Hom.) “For me,” he added, “this communion with the Pope, is the secret of the truth and gives efficacy to my preaching.” That same month, of course, he would be martyred. In the years following, John Paul recalled Romero on countless occasions, including the first anniversary of the assassination, in which John Paul invoked Romero in St. Peter’s Square; and at the memorial for 20th century martyrs in the Colosseum, when the Parkinson’s stricken Pontiff hand-wrote Romero’s name on a draft list of those to be honored. But John Paul’s most enduring tribute may be his 1983 war time visit to El Salvador, and the unscheduled detour to Romero’s grave in the shuttered Cathedral, in which he called Romero a “zealous pastor, whom love of God and service of brethren drove to surrender his life in a violent manner, while he celebrated the Sacrament of forgiveness and reconciliation.” (Remarks at San Salvador Cathedral, March 6, 1983—in Spanish.)

Tre giorni dopo l'improvvisa morte del “Papa del sorriso”, Oscar Romero ha onorato il Pontefice caduto. Archbishop Romero said outright that Pope Paul VI (pontificate: 1963-1978) was the man “who continually enlightens my thinking [on] ... matters [of the social doctrine of the Church]”, and he elegized the Pontiff as having struck the right balance between secular and spiritual concerns—“a man who understood the present time and never betrayed the eternal Word.” (November 19, 1978 Homily.) —This is a series on Romero’s fidelity to the popes and their social teachings.— “Your bishop, my sisters and brothers,” Romero told his flock, “is in communion with Peter who today is called Paul VI.” (April 9, 1978 Hom.) Paul’s papal infallibility, Romero preached, “assures people that the doctrine of Paul VI is the doctrine of Peter and the doctrine of Jesus Christ,” and Romero’s communion with Paul should assure them, “that the doctrine that the humble Archbishop of San Salvador preaches to the people is also the truth.” (July 2, 1978 Hom.)

Under the pontificate of Giovanni Battista Montini, Msgr. Romero had been created a bishop in 1970, appointed the ordinary in Santiago de Maria in 1974, elevated to a prestigious post as a consultor on Paul’s Pontifical Commission on Latin America in 1975, and appointed Archbishop of San Salvador in 1977. When Romero visited the Pontiff in late March 1977 after taking over the Archdiocese of San Salvador, it was a crowning moment. The Pope “singled him out among the others present at the audience and introduced him to the group.” (James BROCKMAN, Romero: A Life. New York: Orbis Books, 1989, p. 20).

But, Romero had started out as a tenuous follower of a man he called “the most reforming Pontiff in history.” (O.A.R., El Papa del equilibrio [The Pope of Balance], DIARIO DE ORIENTE, vol. 30858, p. 1, June 26, 1973, available here—in Spanish.) Looking back on the first decade of Paul’s pontificate in 1973, Romero marveled, “How far he has taken us already!” (DIARIO, Ibid.) The next year, Romero was still aghast at Paul’s prodigious reforms. The Second Vatican Council (the internal Church reforms launched by John XXIII in the 1960s), Romero noted, “had only been the starting point for Paul VI. He has been and continues to be,” Romero wrote, “the most intrepid driver of that ambitious and broad reform program” of Vatican II. Óscar Romero had gone along with Paul’s reforms because of Romero’s personal obedience to the Church, because he had met the Pope and was drawn in by his personality and, most of all, because of the masterful integrity of Paul’s teachings, especially his social magisterium. As Pope Benedict has stated, Paul VI, “identified the heart of the Christian social message” («CARITAS IN VERITATE,» ¶13). Romero cited Pope Paul VI often in his homilies, pastoral letters, and other preachings. Although it would not be practical to catalog all of the references, Romero liked to cite Paul’s «EVANGELII NUNTIANDI,» especially, for the proposition that liberation, though necessary, cannot be divorced from transcendence (See, e.g., Oct. 23, 1977; Apr. 30, Jun. 4, and Sep. 10, 1978; and Aug. 5 and 26, 1979 homilies). Romero cited «POPULORUM PROGRESSIO» frequently—and, often, at length—to justify his actions (See, e.g., Jul. 10 and Oct. 9, 1977; Jan. 1, and 15, Feb. 5 and 26, and Sept. 24, 1978 homilies). He also quoted from Paul’s «OCTAGESIMA ADVENIENS» (See, March 5, 1978 Hom.)

In addition to citing Paul’s principal social documents, Romero also pointed to other examples from the Pope’s public ministry. “When we spoke privately,” Romero told the faithful, “the Pope said to me: ‘We preach not only with words because our preaching must also be a testimony of our whole life’.” (July 2, 1978 Hom.) And so, Romero cited Paul’s visit to the Holy Land to urge the faithful to imitate the humility of the Holy Family. (December 30, 1979 Hom.) Romero used Paul’s visit to the U.N. to underline the thought that the Church has something to offer to political leaders because the Church is “an expert in humanity.” (March 2, 1980 Hom.) Romero cited Paul’s humanism (July 17, 1977 Hom.), and pointed to Paul’s appeal for the life of Aldo Moro to denounce kidnappings and killings by the Left in El Salvador (May 21, 1978 Hom.). He even pointed to Paul’s condemnation of contraception as an argument for social justice: “ ‘How sad the fate of human beings to have to deprive people of participating in the banquet of life because they do not know how to share. It is not a question of depriving people from entering the banquet of life but rather one of serving the tables in a way that everyone receives some bread’.” (February 24, 1980 Hom.)

The admiration was mutual, because Paul VI consistently was supportive of Romero:

When Paul VI first met Romero in 1974, when Romero became Bishop of Santiago de Maria, Romero showed him where Santiago de Maria was on a map, and Paul promised to pray for the tiny diocese. (O.A.R., Como signo de Comunión con el Papa [A Sign of Communion with the Pope], DIARIO DE ORIENTE, vol. 30930, p. 1, November 23, 1974, available here—in Spanish.) Paul gave him $5,000 as a gift for the diocese, and the Pontifical Commission gave Romero an additional $3,000, plus a complete set of Vatican publications dating back to 1909. (BROCKMAN, Op. Cit., p. 53.) The Pontiff told the new bishop: “Continue onward, follow your line, follow your style, don’t be afraid to profess and teach what you have learned in the magisterium of the Church.” (DIARIO, Ibid.)
In October 1975, Romero met with Paul again, and “told him how much we Salvadorans love him and respect him,” when his turn came to greet the Pontiff. Romero gave the Pope a record of Salvadoran folkloric music, which the Pope promised to listen to. In March 1977, Romero met with the Pope, after the assassination of Fr. Rutilio Grande, and after Romero started his archbishopric on a decidedly strong note of denunciation. When Romero attempted to explain his actions, “The Pope took both of Romero’s hands in his and urged him: ‘Courage! You are the one in charge!’ ” (BROCKMAN, Supra., p. 20.)
The final meeting between Archibishop Romero and Pope Paul VI took place on June 21, 1978. The Pontiff told Romero “that he understood how difficult his work as archbishop was and that it was often misunderstood.” (BROCKMAN, Ibid., p. 131.) This meeting, Romero noted, “left me with the satisfaction of a confirmation in my Faith, in my service, in my joy to work and to suffer with Christ, for the Church, and for our people.” (His Diary, June 21, 1978.)

Archbishop Romero followed Pope Paul's leadership on development and social justice, he looked to the Pope for confirmation, and the Pope approved of his faithful discliple’s ministry.
