Given the successful Novena launched in this Blog at year’s end, the faithful followers of Archbishop Romero are invited to participate in a second Novena offered for his beatification. This Novena of Our Lady of Candelaria (Candlemas/the Lady of the Presentation), would have much pleased Archbishop Romero. Along with the prayers of the Novena, you will find reflections centered on the preaching of Abp. Romero in 1977, his most Marian year. This novena also recalls the Candelaria Novena prayed in Argentina in January-February 2013 which culminated with a Mass celebrated by the then Cardinal Bergoglio.

DAY 1: Sunday, January 25, 2015  

Novena prayer: “Immaculate Lady of the Presentation: you who being pure in the sight of God, were yet willing to be purified like a sinner to teach us the importance of living in God's grace, grant that we, in imitation of you, seek to give due importance to being purified in the eyes of God, even though we should humble ourselves to recognize our sins in confession. Amen.”

Reflection: “Mary is the first Christian. Mary is the model of a gospel that becomes life. Mary is the ideal of the Church. How much the Church desires in her work with people to make all men and women appear like Mary, the model person who allowed herself to be redeemed, the model person who says to God as he presents his plan of salvation: Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.”  —Archbishop Romero, December 19, 1977

Romero Beatification Prayer: “Oh! Jesus, Eternal Shepherd, You have made Archbishop Oscar Romero a living example of faith and charity, and have granted him the grace to die at the foot of the altar in a supreme act of love for You. Grant us, if it is Your will, the grace of his beatification. May we follow his example of love for Your Church, for Your Word and the Eucharist; and may we love You in the poorest and the neediest. We ask this through the intercession of [the Virgin of Candelaria]. Amen.”

Novena prayer: “Immaculate Lady of the Presentation, who, being full of holiness have nevertheless presented yourself at the temple to fulfill the Law of God, grant that we, in imitation of you, come to love our church and consider it more each day as a place to approach God. Amen.”

Reflection: “At the time of his presentation the various laws of Moses were fulfilled: the circumcision of the first male child and the purification of his mother who, even though she was immaculate, wanted to give us this gesture of obedience to God’s law, as well as a gesture of humility and respect for what God had stipulated.  Here in the Cathedral, we venerate this beautiful image of the Virgin of the Presentation. I would like everyone in the Capital and in the Diocese to remember that this was the first image of the Virgin that our people venerated.”  —Archbishop Romero, February 5, 1978

Memory of Saint Angela Merici 

Novena prayer: “Immaculate Lady of the Presentation: you who did not hesitate to put your son Jesus into the hands of Simeon, knowing how he prayed in the temple for the grace of seeing the Redeemer grant that we too may sigh to have Christ in our heart so that you may hand it to God. Amen.”

Reflection: “My beloved sisters and brothers, we have reflected and asked the Virgin Mary to enable us to understand the mystery of her child.  She has summed all of this up through my humble word:  My child is nothing more and nothing less than the manifestation of men to men:  their dignity and the greatness of God which they bear as images of God.  Know how to be worthy of this seal that each person bears.  And finally Mary says:  this child that is in my arms is the most beautiful image of the Church that will be prolonged for centuries and that will bring the life of God into the midst of human deficiencies, into the midst of the poverty of the manger in Bethlehem.”  —Archbishop Romero, December 25, 1977

Memory of St. Thomas Aquinas, Doctor of the Church

Novena prayer: “Immaculate Lady of the Presentation: You who upon presenting your son Jesus in the temple heard the announcement of your pain and accepted it as the will of God, grant, that we shall not become that prophesied sword and our sins the cause of your pain. Amen.”

Reflection: “This image is a great treasure, not the image, but the trust in this mother who can say to all mothers who suffer that no one has suffered like her. During her lifetime, no other mother has carried within herself the prophecy that Mary carried from the time that she cradled her son in her arms. No other mother has heard at the beginning of the life of her son a prophet proclaim a disgraceful, bloody end to his life. If a mother were to hear during her child’s infancy that this son would be tragically murdered and that a sword would pierce her heart, then, my sisters and brothers, the whole life of this mother would be one of suffering, a Calvary.”  —Archbishop Romero, December 1, 1977

Novena prayer: “Immaculate Lady of the Presentation, You who neither upon presenting yourself in the temple nor at any time thereafter invoked your condition as Mother of God, demonstrating the importance and value of humility, let us put aside everlasting self-concern and based on your example may we grow in appreciation of humility. Amen.”

Reflection: “When Mary, the virgin, the most spiritual being of Yahweh, sings her praises to God who will free those who are humble and poor there appears to be a political dimension to her words: The hungry he has filled with good things and the rich he has sent away empty. Mary also proclaims words that today might be considered words of insurrection: He has thrown down the rulers from their thrones but lifted up the lowly. This is the political dimension of our faith, a faith that was lived by Mary and also lived by Jesus.”  —Archbishop Romero, February 17, 1980

Memory of St. Martina, martyr 

Novena prayer: “Oh Blessed Lady of the Presentation: we pray that you obtain for us from your beloved Son Our Lord Jesus Christ the grace to imitate your virtues, keep the commandments and be repelled by the horror of mortal sin. So one day we will rejoice eternally in heaven. Amen.”

Reflection: “In the sight of God we are mischievous children who have disfigured his eternal plans. But thanks to God, there is someone who has perfectly accomplished his plans, someone who responds with the words that we heard in this morning’s gospel: Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word. There is no alienation here. Alienation is characteristic of those persons who say: I will not serve you. I will act according to my own desires. Such people are living the darkness of their being. The Council says that when people sin: the thread that unites them with their Creator fades away and is broken and ruined or as Jesus said: every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. Every sinner is a branch that is cut off. On the other hand, Mary tells the Lord that she is a branch that is firmly attached to the tree: I do not want to separate myself from you. I want to bear fruit, that which you give me, that which is in your mind. May it be done to me according to your will. This is the story of salvation.”  —Archbishop Romero, December 24, 1978

Novena prayer: “Immaculate Lady of the Presentation: aware of our weaknesses, we come to you, so that you may obtain for us the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, to be able to lead a life worthy of our Christian vocation, to imitate your virtues and thus obtain the reward of eternal life. Amen.”

Reflection: “This Church that is on pilgrimage among the persecutions and sorrows of the earth looks to Mary and contemplates in Mary her immortal destiny. She is encouraged to suffer all these pains and persecutions because she knows that God, through this pain (like he did with Mary’s pain), is molding those living stones for that glorious temple where God will reign forever in majesty and beauty.”  —Archbishop Romero, August 15, 1977

Novena prayer: “Immaculate Lady of the Presentation, through your virginal purity, your immaculate conception and your prerogative as Mother of God, obtain for me from your beloved son, humility, serenity, purity of heart, body and spirit, holy perseverance in what is good, the gift of prayer, a holy life and glorious eternity. Amen.”

Reflection: “Mary is the first stone of that glorious edifice upon which God is going to build his temple for all eternity. Thus Mary is the beginning and the model that the Church Mary is called the prima redenta, the first person to be redeemed, the model of all those redeemed, the one who has been redeemed par excellence, the most beautiful flower of redemption, the abundance of the crucified Christ on the cross. The blood of Christ could not spring forth from a more beautiful rock than Mary, his own mother.”  —Archbishop Romero, December 19, 1977

Feast of the Presentation of the Lord

 Novena prayer: “Immaculate Lady of the Presentation; by your obedience to the Father, aware of our pride and arrogance, we beseech you to assist us to accept the will of God, so that our whole life may become a renewed Yes to the will of the Eternal Father. Amen.”

Reflection: “The Virgin of the Presentation will be seen as the patroness and the sign of the love of a people who were born to be a people of Mary, a people for Mary, and a people of Christ.”  —Archbishop Romero, April 9, 1978

Dada la exitosa Novena lanzada en este Blog para fin de año, se invita a los fieles seguidores de Mons. Romero a participar en una segunda Novena ofrecida para pedir su beatificación.  Esta Novena de la Virgen de la Candelaria, hubiera complacido mucho a Mons. Romero.  A la par de las oraciones de la novena, van reflexiones desprendidas principalmente de la predicación de Mons. Romero en 1977, el año más mariano de su arzobispado.  Esta novena también hace recuerdo de la Novena de Candelaria rezada en Argentina en enero-febrero del 2013 que culminó con una Eucaristía celebrada por el entonces Cardenal Bergoglio.

Oración de la novena: “Virgen Inmaculada de la Candelaria: tú que siendo purísima a los ojos de Dios, quisisteis ser purificada como los pecadores para enseñarnos la importancia de vivir en gracia de Dios: haz que también nosotros, a imitación tuya, procuremos dar la debida importancia a vivir limpios a los ojos de Dios, aunque debamos humillarnos para reconocer nuestros pecados en la confesión. Amén”.

Reflexión: “María es la primera cristiana, María es el modelo de un evangelio que se hace vida, María es el ideal de la Iglesia. Cómo quisiera la Iglesia en su trabajo con los pueblos hacer que todos los hombres, y todas las mujeres sobre todo, se parezcan a María, el modelo del alma que se deja redimir, el modelo del alma que le dice a Dios en sus proyectos de salvación: he aquí la esclava del Señor; hágase en mi según tu palabra”.    —Mons. Oración por la Beatificación: “¡Oh! Jesús, Pastor Eterno: Tú hiciste de Monseñor Óscar Romero un ejemplo vivo de fe y de caridad, y le concediste la gracia de morir al pie del altar en un acto supremo de amor a Ti. Concédenos, si es Tu voluntad, la gracia de su beatificación. Haz que sigamos su ejemplo de amor por tu Iglesia, por tu Palabra y la Eucaristía; y te amemos en los más pobres y necesitados. Oración de la novena: “Virgen Inmaculada de Candelaria, que estando llena de santidad te has presentado lo mismo al templo para cumplir con la Ley de Dios: haz que también nosotros, a imitación tuya, lleguemos a querer nuestro templo y considerarlo cada día más como lugar de nuestro acercamiento a Dios. Amén”.

Reflexión: “celebramos esa presentación del Niño Jesús en el templo, 40 días después de haber nacido, para cumplir aquellas leyes de Moisés: la circuncisión del varoncito primogénito y la purificación de la madre que, aunque era inmaculada, pero nos quiso dar ese gesto de obediencia a la ley de Dios y de humildad, de acatamiento a lo que Dios dispone. Aquí en Catedral veneramos esta preciosa imagen de la Virgen de la Presentación. Yo quisiera que todos los de la capital y todos los de la Diócesis tuviéramos presente que fue la primera imagen de la Virgen que veneramos en nuestro pueblo”.    —Mons. Romero, 5 de febrero de 1978

Oración de la novena: “Virgen Inmaculada de Candelaria: tú que no dudaste de poner a tu hijo Jesús en las manos de Simeón, sabiendo como rogaba en el templo por la gracia de ver al Redentor: haz que también nosotros suspiremos por tener a Cristo en nuestro corazón y así tú puedas entregarlo a Dios. Así sea”.

Reflexión: “Queridos hermanos, hemos reflexionado pidiéndole a la Virgen María que nos haga comprender el misterio de su niño y ella nos ha resumido a través de mi humilde palabra: Mi niño no es otra cosa, ni nada menos, que la manifestación de los hombres al hombre mismo: su dignidad, su grandeza de Dios, que llevan como imágenes de Dios. Sepan ser dignos de esa impronta que cada hombre lleva; y en tercer lugar, este niño en mis brazos, nos dice María, es la imagen bella de la Iglesia que se prolongará por los siglos llevando la vida de Dios entre deficiencias humanas, entre pobrezas de cuna de Belén”.    —Mons. Oración de la novena: “Virgen Inmaculada de la Candelaria: Tu que al presentar a tu hijo Jesús en el templo oíste el anuncio de tus dolores y lo aceptaste como la voluntad de Dios, haz, que no seamos nosotros aquella espada y nuestra maldad la causa de tus dolores. Así sea”.

Reflexión: “Es el tesoro más grande, no precisamente la imagen, sino la confianza en esa madre que le puede decir a todas las madres que sufren que nadie ha sufrido como ella, porque ninguna de ustedes, madres, ha llevado durante toda su vida una profecía como la llevó María, desde que su niño se acunaba en sus brazos. Ninguna de ustedes, madres, ha oído en los albores de la vida de sus niños a un profeta que les anunciaba el fin desgraciado, sangriento, de sus hijos, porque si una madre como María oye en la infancia de su niño que va a morir trágicamente y que por él su corazón de madre será traspasado por una espada, hermanos, toda la vida de esa madre es calvario y es sufrimiento”.    —Mons. Oración de la novena: “Virgen Inmaculada de Candelaria: Tú que ni al presentarte en el templo ni nunca después pregonaste tu condición de Madre de Dios para demostrar la importancia y valor de la humildad, haz que deje de importarnos el sempiterno figurar y a ejemplo tuyo crezca en nosotros el aprecio de la humildad. Así sea”.

Reflexión: “María, la Virgen, la más espiritual de Yahvé, comprende así, y cuando canta a su Magnificat que Dios libera a los humildes, a los pobres, también resuena esta dimensión política cuando dice textualmente: Dios despacha vacíos a los ricos y colma de bienes a los pobres...  María también llega a decir una palabra que diríamos hoy insurreccional: ¡Derriba del trono a los poderosos cuando éstos ya son un estorbo para la tranquilidad del pueblo...! Esta es la dimensión política de nuestra fe: la vivió María, la vivió Jesús.”.    —Mons. Romero, 17 de febrero de 1980

Oración de la novena: “Oh Virgen Santísima de la Candelaria: te suplicamos que nos alcances de tu hijo amado Nuestro Señor Jesucristo la gracia de imitar tus virtudes, cumplir los mandamientos y tener horror al pecado mortal. Así un día gozaremos eternamente contigo en el cielo. Así sea”.

Reflexión: “Eso somos para Dios, niños malcriados que le hemos trastornado sus proyectos eternos. Pero he aquí que hay, gracias a Dios, alguien que sí ha sido el proyecto realizado a perfección: aquella que en el Evangelio de hoy aparece diciendo: He aquí la esclava del Señor, hágase en mi según su palabra. Esto no es alienación. Alienación es la del que dice como Satanás: No te serviré, voy a ir a hacer mi capricho, porque éste se hunde en las tinieblas de su nada. Todo pecador es una rama cortada. En cambio María le dice al Señor, como la rama pegada al tronco: No me quiero separar de ti. Quiero llevar fruto, el que tú me das, el de tu savia, el de tu pensamiento. Oración de la novena: “Santísima Virgen de la Candelaria: conscientes de nuestras debilidades acudimos a ti, para que nos alcances la gracia de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo, de poder llevar una vida digna de nuestra vocación cristiana, imitar tus virtudes y conseguir así el premio de la vida eterna. Así sea”.

Reflexión: “Esta Iglesia que todavía peregrina entre persecuciones y dolores en la tierra, mira a María y en ella contempla su destino inmortal y se anima a sufrir todos los dolores y persecuciones, porque sabe que a través de este dolor, como el dolor de María, Dios está labrando las piedras vivas de aquel templo glorioso en el cual Dios fungirá para siempre toda su majestad y toda su belleza”.    —Mons. Oración de la novena: “Virgen Inmaculada de la Candelaria: por tu pureza virginal, tu inmaculada concepción y tu prerrogativa de Madre de Dios, alcánzame de tu amado hijo, la humildad, la serenidad, la pureza del corazón, de cuerpo y de espíritu, la santa perseverancia en el bien, el don de la oración, una santa vida y gloriosa eternidad. Así sea”.

Reflexión: “María, que ya está en el cielo como primera piedra de aquel edificio glorioso con que va a construir Dios su templo para toda la eternidad.  María, se le llama por eso «prima redenta», la primera redimida, el modelo de los redimidos, la redimida por excelencia, la flor más hermosa de la redención, el lujo de Cristo crucificado en la cruz. Oración de la novena: “Virgen Inmaculada de la Candelaria; por tu obediencia al Padre, conscientes de nuestra soberbia y orgullo, te suplicamos nos ayudes a aceptar la voluntad de Dios, para que toda nuestra vida no sea otra cosa que un renovado Si, al querer del Padre Eterno. Así sea”.

Reflexión: “Nuestra Señora de la Presentación; la bonita imagen que tenemos aquí, la primera imagen de María que se veneró en El Salvador … que sea la patrona y el símbolo del cariño de un pueblo que nació para ser de María, y por María, de Cristo”.    —Mons. Romero, 9 de abril de 1978

Dato ill successo della Novena lanciata in questo blog a fine anno, i fedeli seguaci di monsignor Romero sono invitati a partecipare in una seconda Novena offerta per la sua beatificazione. Questa Novena di Nostra Signora della Candelaria (Candelora / la Signora della Presentazione), avrebbe molto piaciuto Mons. Romero. Insieme con le preghiere della Novena, troverete riflessi dalla predicazione di Mons. Romero nel 1977, il suo anno più mariano. Questa novena ricorda anche la Novena della Candelaria pregato in Argentina nel gennaio-febbraio 2013, che culminò con una messa celebrata dal allora cardinale Bergoglio.

1° GIORNO: Domenica 25 gennaio 2015 

Preghiera della Novena: “Immacolata Signora della Presentazione: Tu che essendo pura agli occhi di Dio, erano ancora disposti ad essere purificata come una peccatora per insegnarci l'importanza di vivere in grazia di Dio, fa 'che noi, a imitazione di te, cerchiamo di dare la giusta importanza ad essere purificati agli occhi di Dio, anche se dovremmo umiliarci a riconoscere i nostri peccati in confessione. Amen.”

Riflessione: “Maria è la prima cristiana. Maria è il modello di un Vangelo che diventa vita. Maria è l'ideale della Chiesa. Quanto la Chiesa desidera nel suo lavoro con la gente per rendere tutti gli uomini e le donne appaiono come Maria, il modello di persona che si è lasciata redenta, il modello di persona che dice a Dio come egli presenta il suo piano di salvezza: Ecco, io sono il serva del Signore. Avvenga di me secondo la tua parola”. —Mons. Romero, 19 dicembre 1977

Preghiera per la beatificazione: “O! Gesù, Pastore eterno, Tu hai fatto Mons. Oscar Romero un esempio vivente di fede e di carità, e gli hanno concesso la grazia di morire ai piedi dell'altare in un supremo atto di amore per Te. Concedici, se è tua volontà, la grazia della sua beatificazione. Possiamo seguire il suo esempio di amore per la Tua Chiesa, per la Tua Parola e l'Eucaristia; e possiamo amarti nei più poveri ei bisognosi. Preghiera della Novena: “Immacolata Signora della Presentazione, che, essendo piena di santità avete presentato al tempio per adempiere la Legge di Dio, fa 'che noi, a imitazione di te, impareremo ad amare la nostra chiesa e considerla ogni giorno di più come un luogo di avvicinarsi a Dio. Amen.”

Riflessione: “Al momento della sua presentazione varie leggi di Mosè sono state soddisfatte: la circoncisione del primo figlio maschio e la purificazione della madre, che, anche se lei era immacolata, ha voluto darci questo gesto di obbedienza alla legge di Dio, come pure come un gesto di umiltà e rispetto per ciò che Dio aveva stipulato. Qui, nella Cattedrale, veneriamo questa bella immagine della Madonna della Presentazione. Vorrei che tutti nella capitale e nella Diocesi di ricordate che questa è stata la prima immagine della Vergine che la nostra gente venera”. —Mons. Romero, 5 febbraio 1978

Preghiera della Novena: “Immacolata Signora della Presentazione: Tu che non hai esitato a mettere tuo figlio Gesù nelle mani di Simeone, sapendo come pregava nel tempio per la grazia di vedere il Redentore concede che anche noi possiamo sospirare per avere Cristo nel nostro cuore in modo che si può consegnare a Dio. Amen.”

Riflessione: “Miei cari fratelli e sorelle, abbiamo riflettuto e ha chiesto alla Vergine Maria, per permetterci di comprendere il mistero del suo bambino. Ha riassunto tutto questo attraverso la mia umile parola: Il mio figlio è niente di più e niente di meno che la manifestazione degli uomo agli uomini: la loro dignità e la grandezza di Dio, che portano come immagini di Dio. Saper essere degno di questo sigillo che ogni persona porta. E infine Maria dice: questo bambino che è tra le mie braccia è la più bella immagine della Chiesa che verrà prolungata per secoli e che porterà la vita di Dio in mezzo a carenze umane, in mezzo alla povertà della mangiatoia a Betlemme”. —Mons. Memoria di san Tommaso d'Aquino, dottore della Chiesa

Preghiera della Novena: “Immacolata Signora della Presentazione: Tu che nella presentazione del tuo figlio Gesù nel tempio ascoltato l'annuncio del vostro dolore e ha accettato come la volontà di Dio, non siamo noi la spada e la causa del vostro dolore. Amen.”

Riflessione: “Questa immagine è un grande tesoro, non l'immagine, ma la fiducia in questa madre che può dire a tutte le mamme che soffrono che nessuna ha sofferto come lei. Durante la sua vita, nessun altra madre ha portato in sé la profezia che Maria ha portato dal momento che cullava il figlio in braccio. Nessun altra madre ha sentito all'inizio della vita di suo figlio un profeta che proclama un vergognoso, sanguinoso fine alla sua vita. Riflessione: “Agli occhi di Dio siamo figli birichini che hanno deturpato i suoi piani eterni. Ma grazie a Dio, c'è qualcuna che ha perfettamente compiuto i suoi piani, qualcuna che risponde con le parole che abbiamo ascoltato nel Vangelo di questa mattina: Eccomi, sono la serva del Signore. Riflessione: “Questa Chiesa che è in pellegrinaggio tra le persecuzioni e le sofferenze della terra guarda a Maria e contempla in Maria il suo destino immortale. Riflessione: “Maria è la prima pietra di quel glorioso edificio su cui Dio sta per costruire il suo tempio per tutta l'eternità. Così Maria è l'inizio e il modello della Chiesa; Maria è chiamata la prima Redenta, il modello di tutti coloro redenti, colui che è stato riscattato per eccellenza, il fiore più bello della redenzione, l'abbondanza del Cristo crocifisso sulla croce. Plans for the beatification of Archbishop Oscar A. Romero, expected this year, took some definition after the Pope Francis “essentially ruled out travelling to El Salvador” and joked that “There will be a war between Monsignor Paglia and Cardinal Amato” over which of the two will beatify Archbishop Romero.

If we rule out the possibility that the pope will celebrate the beatification (Francis also spoke of a “beatification”—and not a “canonization” as some had speculated), this opens the door to the possibility that the ceremony will be much sooner than the September time frame contemplated when we thought it might be the pope who led the ceremony. Even without any verified facts, we can imagine three possibilities:

A.         March 24th (the 35th anniversary of Archbishop Romero’s martyrdom)

B.         August 15th (Archbishop Romero’s birthday / Feast of the Assumption)

C.        Another Date 

Without knowing more, it seems most logical to schedule the beatification of Archbishop Romero around one of the dates already celebrating his memory. Otherwise, there will be three Romero celebrations in El Salvador this year! In particular, it may make sense to schedule the beatification around the March anniversary of his martyrdom. The problem is that it does not leave much time to make preparations. But on the other hand, the 35th anniversary entails its own planning, which can be simply incorporated into what the beatification requires. For the anniversary, there will be a large Mass in San Salvador, processions, seminars, pilgrimages, etc. They don’t call it San Salvador’s “little Holy Week” for nuthin’. If March is not possible, August may make some sense also.

So far, there is no announcement. However, as John Allen noted: in his words, “Francis seemed to take for granted that [Romero’s] beatification will come soon.” We await official word, but those are the considerations.

Update: speaking at at Santa Clara University on January 20, Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez, a close adviser to Pope Francis remarked, “you know that, God willing, Archbishop Romero will be beatified in the second part of the year” (emphasis added).  For you tea-leaf readers.

On the subject of pilgrimages for the 35th anniversary, some organizations have already announced delegations to El Salvador for the celebrations. This blog will gather all the details. The following have been announced so far:

Finally: Who are Amato and Paglia?

Cardinal Angelo Amato is the Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, the highest authority in the Church for authorizing saints (after the Pope). Amato is Italian, but speaks Spanish and English. Pope Francis commented on him in Korea as “a good man, who is called Angel [Angelo].” In a speech to the congregation, Amato remembered as a highlight a beatification in the Ecuadorian Amazon in 2012, where the Indians of the area made him drink a “chicha” made by the tribal elders with saliva by chewing leaves. Amato reveled in relating that after taking a deep drink, he told the Indians: “Now I am one of thee!” On the other hand, when Amato was secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, he had to sign the Notificatio against Jon Sobrino.

Monsignor Vincenzo Paglia is the postulator of Archbishop Romero’s Cause, assigned that task by John Paul II in 1996, and a tireless Romero champion for all these years. He is also Italian, but speaks Spanish and English as well. He has long been spiritual counselor to the Catholic movement Sant'Egidio, which is dedicated to working for peace. Paglia served for a time as a kind of special delegate of Pope Wojtyla to troubled areas. Since 2012, Paglia is also the President of the Pontifical Council for the Family, one of the leading advisers to Pope Benedict XVI and now Francis.

Simply by virtue of his being a cardinal, the “war” would be won by Amato.  (Amato is presiding all six other beatifications set so far this year.)

Los planes para la beatificación de Mons. Oscar A. Romero, esperada para este año, tomaron algo de definición después que el mismo Papa Francisco “prácticamente ha eliminado la posibilidad de viajar a El Salvador” y ha bromeado de que “Habrá una guerra entre monseñor Paglia y el Cardenal Amato” sobre  cuál de los dos estará a cargo de beatificar a Mons. Romero. 

Al excluir la posibilidad de que sea el papa quien celebre la beatificación (el Sumo Pontífice también habló de una “beatificación”—y no de una “canonización” como muchos habían especulado), el papa abrió las puertas a la posibilidad de que la ceremonia sea mucho más luego que el septiembre que se contemplaba cuando se pensaba que sería el papa quien la celebrara.  Sin tener aún datos concretos, podemos imaginarnos tres posibilidades:

A.            El 24 de marzo (35 ° aniversario del martirio de Mons. Romero)

B.            El 15 de agosto (cumpleaños de Mons. Romero/Fiesta de la Asunción de la Virgen)

C.            Otra Fecha 

Sin saber más, lo más lógico parece programar la beatificación de Mons. Romero  en una de las fechas en que ya se estará celebrando su memoria: sino, ¡habrán tres celebraciones Romero en El Salvador este año!  En particular, puede tener mucho sentido programar la beatificación en torno a la celebración del aniversario de su martirio en marzo.  El problema es que no deja mucho tiempo para hacer preparativos.  Pero, por otro lado, el 35 ° aniversario ya supone su propia planificación, que puede ser simplemente anexada a lo que la beatificación requiere.  Para el aniversario, ya habrá una gran misa en San Salvador, procesiones, seminarios, peregrinaciones, etc.  No por nada le llaman “la pequeña Semana Santa” en San Salvador.  Si no se puede hacer para marzo, agosto también puede tener sentido.

Actualización: hablando en la Universidad de Santa Clara el 20 de enero, el cardenal Oscar Rodríguez, un asesor cercano al Papa Francisco comentó: “saben que, si Dios quiere, Monseñor Romero será beatificado en la segunda parte del año” (el subrayado es mio). Para nuestros adivinos.

Por el momento, no hay anuncio.  Sin embargo, como bien señaló John Allen: en sus palabras, “Francisco parecía dar por sentado que la beatificación [de Romero] vendrá pronto”.  Esperamos palabra oficial, pero esas son las consideraciones.

Finalmente: ¿quiénes son Amato y Paglia?

Monseñor Vincenzo Paglia es el Postulador de la Causa de Mons. Romero, asignado esa tarea por San Juan Pablo II en 1996, y un incansable campeón de Romero por todos estos años.  También es Italiano, pero habla español.  Ha sido por mucho tiempo el consejero del movimiento católico Sant’Egidio, que se dedica a trabajar por la paz.  Paglia fungió por un tiempo como una especie de delegado especial del Papa Wojtyla a zonas conflictivas.  Desde el 2012, Paglia es también el Presidente del Pontificio Concilio para la Familia, uno de los principales consejeros de los papas Benedicto XVI y ahora Francisco.

Por la sencilla razón de ser Cardenal, la “guerra” la ganaría Amato.  (Amato presidirá todas las otras seis beatificaciones programadas al momento para este año.)
