Given the critical phase that the beatification process of Archbishop Óscar A. Romero of El Salvador is passing through, Super Martyrio offers this private novena for the successful conclusion of the process.  This is an enhanced version of the Novena to the Magi in anticipation of the Epiphany that is proper to the season.  As calendared, it begins on the Feast of St. Thomas Becket, the last bishop killed at the altar before Abp. Romero (in 1170) and concludes the day the Three Kings are celebrated in Latin America.

Memory of Saint Thomas Becket, Bishop and Martyr

Novena prayer: “O holy Magi! You were living in continual expectation of the rising of the Star of Jacob, which would announce the birth of the true Sun of justice; obtain for us an increase of faith and charity, and the grace to live in continual hope of beholding one day the light of heavenly glory and eternal joy. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.”

Reflection: “[T]he Epiphany is guiding us with the star of the Magi, with the perspective of a clarity that comes from God in order to save people.  As we search for liberation we cannot enclose ourselves within earthly and temporal limitations.  The true liberation that the Church proclaims and with which she accompanies the liberating efforts of humanity places these efforts in a global context and orients them toward salvation.”  —Archbishop Romero, January 7, 1979

Jesus, Eternal Shepherd, You have made Archbishop Oscar Romero a living example of faith and charity, and have granted him the grace to die at the foot of the altar in a supreme act of love for You. Grant us, if it is Your will, the grace of his beatification. May we follow his example of love for Your Church, for Your Word and the Eucharist; and may we love You in the poorest and the neediest. We ask this through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, Queen of Peace. Amen.”

Novena prayer: “O holy Magi! who regarded neither the severity of the season, nor the inconveniences of the journey that you might find the newborn Messiah; obtain for us the grace not to allow ourselves to be discouraged by any of the difficulties which may meet us on the way of salvation. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.”

Reflection: “As the Kings from the East followed their star and found Jesus who filled their hearts with great happiness, so too we, in these hours of uncertainty, shadows and darkness, must continue to follow our star, the star of faith.  It is our fidelity to this faith that will enlighten all people.”  —Archbishop Romero, January 8, 1978

Novena prayer: “O holy Magi, who, when deserted by the star in the city of Jerusalem, sought humbly, and without human respect, from the rulers of the Church, the place where you might discover the object of your journey; obtain for us grace to have recourse, in faith and humility, in all our doubts and perplexities to the counsel of our superiors, who hold the place of God on earth. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.”

Reflection: “The Church declares that people can be happy only when, like the Magi, they adore the one true God: when they have freed themselves from false idolatries and come with a pure Christian faith to adore the Christ that we must all adore with more integrity.”  —Archbishop Romero, January 7, 1979

Novena prayer: “O holy Magi, who were gladdened by the reappearance of the star which led you to Bethlehem; obtain for us from God the grace, that, remaining always faithful to Him in afflictions, we may be consoled in time by His grace, and in eternity by His glory. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.”

Reflection: “That which like the sun comes now and illuminates and guides the steps of the Magi and the steps of all people is faith; faith that is rooted in the heart, faith that gives us joy as a result of knowing Christ. Memory of the Holy Name of Jesus 

Novena prayer: “O holy Magi, who, entering full of faith into the stable of Bethlehem, prostrated yourselves on the earth, to adore the newborn King of the Jews, though he was surrounded only by signs of poverty and weakness; obtain from the Lord for us a lively faith in the real presence of Jesus in the blessed Sacrament, the true spirit of poverty, and a Christ-like charity for the poor and suffering. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.”

Reflection: “We can see that the Magi, with the symbolic gifts of incense, gold and myrrh, bring the pain and sorrows and the concerns of their people to beg salvation from the only one who can give it.  So it is in our own history.  Each Sunday when I speak of the specific events of the week, I am only a poor adorer of the Lord, telling him:  Lord, I bring you what the people produce, what the interaction of these people of El Salvador, rich and poor, rulers and ruled, bring forth.”  —Archbishop Romero, January 7, 1979

Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord 

Novena prayer: “O holy Magi, who offered to Jesus Christ gold, incense, and myrrh, thereby recognizing Him to be at once King, God, and Man; obtain from the Lord for us the grace never to present ourselves before Him with empty hands; but that we may continually offer to Him the gold of charity, the incense of prayer, and the myrrh of penance and mortification. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.”

Reflection: “Th[e] kingdom of God certainly has no need of our material goods but we recognize that God, who is the origin of our coffee crops, our canals, our cotton, our wealth and all the wealth of the world, has a right to all of these things.  So we generously offer these things to God.  Perhaps it is better to say that we offer all of this to God in the same way that the Three Kings placed gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh before the child Jesus.  Everything that the world produces belongs to God.”  —Archbishop Romero, January 8, 1978

Novena prayer: “O holy Magi, who, when warned by an angel not to return to Herd, traveled back to your country be another road; obtain for us from the Lord, the grace that, after having found Him in true repentance, we may avoid all danger of losing Him again. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.”

Reflection: “The Vatican Council states that each person has a depth to his/her being, their conscience, which is like a secret room where God descends to speak with individuals and where these individuals then decide their destiny. Let us go down, like the Magi, to the depths of our being and find Christ there in our hearts!  Let us not look for him outside of ourselves but let us look for him within ourselves.  In this way we will find that we are able to speak about the role that we are to undertake during this historic time in El Salvador.  We have much to give because God is with each one of us.”  —Archbishop Romero, January 6, 1980

Novena prayer: “O holy Magi, who were first among the Gentiles called to the knowledge of Jesus Christ, and who persevered in the faith till your deaths, obtain for us of the Lord the grace of living always in conformity to our baptismal vows, ever leading to a life of faith; that like you we may attain to the beatific vision of that God Who now is the object of our faith. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.”

Reflection: “[T]he Magi ... are the first persons in a long processional line and we, gathered here in the Cathedral or in our communities where we are reflecting together on this message … we continue the process, we are the magi today, the magi of 1980.  The Magi of twenty centuries ago were the first ones who received this knowledge of Christ:  blessed are the people, blessed the women and men who find this revelation of Jesus!”  —Archbishop Romero, January 6, 1980

Dada la fase crítica de que el proceso de beatificación de Monseñor Óscar A. Romero está cruzando, Súper Martyrio ofrece esta novena privada por la buena conclusión del proceso.  Esta es una versión de la Novena a los Reyes Magos en la anticipación de la Epifanía que es apropiada para estos tiempos.  Como programada, comienza en la fiesta de Santo Tomás Becket, el último obispo asesinado en el altar antes de Mons.  Romero (en 1170) y concluye el día que se celebran los Reyes Magos por toda la América Latina.

Oración de la novena: “¡O Santos Magos!  Ustedes vivían en la continua expectativa de la aparición de la estrella de Jacob, que anunciaría el nacimiento del verdadero Sol de justicia;  que nosotros obtengamos un aumento de fe y de caridad, y de la gracia de vivir en la esperanza continua de contemplar un día la luz de la gloria celestial y eterna alegría.  Gloria al Padre y al Hijo y al Espíritu Santo, como era en el principio, ahora y siempre, por los siglos de los siglos”.

Reflexión: “La Epifanía nos está orientando con la estrella de los magos, con la perspectiva de una claridad que viene de Dios para salvar a los pueblos que no podemos circunscribir únicamente a límites terrenales, temporales, la liberación que buscamos. Jesús, Pastor Eterno: Tú hiciste de Monseñor Óscar Romero un ejemplo vivo de fe y de caridad, y le concediste la gracia de morir al pie del altar en un acto supremo de amor a Ti. Concédenos, si es Tu voluntad, la gracia de su beatificación. Haz que sigamos su ejemplo de amor por tu Iglesia, por tu Palabra y la Eucaristía; y te amemos en los más pobres y necesitados. Oración de la novena: “¡O Santos Magos!,  que no consideraron ni la gravedad de la temporada, ni los inconvenientes del viaje de manera que buscaban encontrar al Mesías recién nacido;  obtengan para nosotros la gracia de no dejarnos desanimar por cualquiera de las dificultades que podríamos encontrar en el camino de la salvación.  Gloria al Padre y al Hijo y al Espíritu Santo, como era en el principio, ahora y siempre, por los siglos de los siglos”.

Reflexión: “Como los Magos de Oriente siguieron su estrella y se encontraron con Jesús llenándose de inmensa alegría su corazón, nosotros también, aun en las horas de la incertidumbre, de las sombras, de la oscuridad como las tuvieron también los Magos, no dejemos de seguir esa estrella, la de nuestra fe. Oración de la novena: “¡O santos Magos!, que, cuando fuiste abandonados por la estrella en la ciudad de Jerusalén, buscaste humildemente, y sin respeto humano, de los gobernantes de la Iglesia, el lugar donde podrían descubrir el objeto de su viaje;  obtengan para nosotros la gracia de recurrir, con fe y humildad, en todas nuestras dudas y perplejidades a los consejos de nuestros superiores que tienen el lugar de Dios en la tierra.  Gloria al Padre y al Hijo y al Espíritu Santo, como era en el principio, ahora y siempre, por los siglos de los siglos”.

Reflexión: “La Iglesia proclama que solamente podrá ser feliz el hombre cuando adore, como los Magos, al único Dios verdadero: cuando liberándose de todas sus falsas ideologías del Oriente venga con la fe limpia del cristianismo a adorar a este Cristo que hemos de adorar cada vez con más integridad”.  —Mons. Oración de la novena: “¡O santos Magos!, que se alegraron por la reaparición de la estrella que los llevó a Belén;  obtengan para nosotros de Dios la gracia, que, permanezcamos siempre fiel a él en las aflicciones, podamos ser consolados en el tiempo por su gracia, y en la eternidad por su gloria.  Gloria al Padre y al Hijo y al Espíritu Santo, como era en el principio, ahora y siempre, por los siglos de los siglos”.

Reflexión: “Lo que ahora viene a fulgurar, a iluminar como sol, los pasos de los magos y los pasos de todos los hombres, es la fe que nace en el corazón y la alegría de haber conocido a Cristo; y saber que él nunca falla, y que en todas las crisis y aún en los fracasos, siempre queda flotando la alegría de no haber fracasado por haber puesto la confianza en aquel que puede salvarnos”.  —Mons. Oración de la novena: “¡O santos Magos!, que, entrando llenos de fe en el establo de Belén, se postraron en la tierra, para adorar al recién nacido Rey de los Judíos, a pesar de que estaba rodeado sólo por los signos de pobreza y debilidad;  obtengan del Señor para nosotros una fe viva en la presencia real de Jesús en el Santísimo Sacramento, el verdadero espíritu de la pobreza, y una caridad como la de Cristo por los pobres y por los que sufren.  Gloria al Padre y al Hijo y al Espíritu Santo, como era en el principio, ahora y siempre, por los siglos de los siglos”.

Reflexión: “Esos magos, trayendo en el símbolo del incienso del oro y de la mirra, los dones; y junto con los dones el dolor, las angustias, las preocupaciones concretas de sus pueblos para pedir la salvación al único que puede dar, se refleja también en nuestra historia. Oración de la novena: “¡O santos Magos!, que ofrecieron a Jesucristo oro, incienso y mirra, de ese modo reconociéndolo ser a la vez rey, Dios y Hombre;  obtengan del Señor que nos conceda la gracia de nunca presentarnos ante él con las manos vacías;  pero que podemos ofrecer continuamente a Él el oro de la caridad, el incienso de la oración, y la mirra de la penitencia y la mortificación.  Gloria al Padre y al Hijo y al Espíritu Santo, como era en el principio, ahora y siempre, por siglos de los siglos”.

Reflexión: “Es un reino de Dios que ciertamente no necesita nuestros bienes materiales; pero que nosotros al reconocer que es Dios el autor de nuestros cafetales, de nuestros cañales, de nuestras algodoneras, de nuestras riquezas y de las riquezas de todo el mundo, tiene derecho a todas estas cosas; y se las damos con la generosidad, mejor dicho, con el reconocimiento de que Él es el dueño de todo como los Magos que depositaban a su cuna incienso, oro, mirra. Todo lo que el mundo produce es de Dios. Y la riqueza de la Iglesia como reino de Dios es pensar que toda la idiosincrasia de todos los pueblos del mundo son de Dios, y que Dios ha hecho en esta tierra un reino rico como no hay otro reino. Oración de la novena: “¡O santos Magos!, que, cuando fueron advertido por un ángel no volver al Rebaño, viajaron de regreso a su país por otro camino;  obtengan para nosotros del Señor, la gracia de que, después de haberlo encontrado en el verdadero arrepentimiento, podamos evitar todo peligro de perderlo de nuevo.  Gloria al Padre y al Hijo y al Espíritu Santo, como era en el principio, ahora y siempre, por los siglos de los siglos”.

Reflexión: “Dice el Concilio que cada hombre tiene en la intimidad de su ser, su conciencia como una cámara secreta donde Dios baja a hablar con el hombre y donde el hombre decide su propio destino. ¡Que bajáramos hoy, como los magos, a la intimidad a encontrar a Cristo aquí, en el corazón¡ ¡No lo busquemos afuera busquémoslo adentro y veremos que allí podemos hablar del papel que podemos desempeñar en esta hora histórica de El Salvador! Oración de la novena: “¡O santos Magos!, que eran entre los primeros gentiles llamados al conocimiento de Jesucristo, y que perseveraron en la fe hasta sus muertes, obtenga para nosotros del Señor la gracia de vivir siempre en conformidad con nuestros votos bautismales, que nos lleve cada vez a la vida de fe;  y que podamos alcanzar la visión beatífica de Dios que ahora es el objeto de nuestra fe.  Gloria al Padre y al Hijo y al Espíritu Santo, como era en el principio, ahora y siempre, por los siglos de los siglos”.

Preghiera della Novena: “O Santi Magi che viveste in continua attesa della stella di Giacobbe che doveva ammirare la nascita del vero Sole di giustizia, otteneteci la grazia di vivere sempre nella speranza di veder spuntare su di noi il giorno della verità, la beatitudine dei Paradiso.”

Riflessione: “L'Epifania ci guida con la stella dei Magi, con la prospettiva di una chiarezza che viene da Dio per salvare la gente.  Cercando la liberazione non possiamo racchiudere noi stessi all'interno di limitazioni terreni e temporali. La vera liberazione che.. la Chiesa annuncia e con cui accompagna gli sforzi liberatori dell'umanità mette questi sforzi in un contesto globale e li orienta verso la salvezza”. —Mons. Riflessione: “Così, come i Re dall'Oriente seguivano la loro stella e trovarono Gesù che riempiva il loro cuore con grande felicità, anche noi, in queste ore di incertezza, ombre e tenebre, dobbiamo continuare a seguire la nostra stella, la stella della fede. Riflessione: “La Chiesa dichiara che le persone possono essere felici solo quando, come i Magi, adorano l'unico vero Dio: quando si sono liberati dalle false idolatrie e sono dotati di una fede cristiana pura per adorare il Cristo che tutti dobbiamo adorare con più integrità”. —Mons. Riflessione: “Possiamo vedere che i Magi, con i doni simbolici di incenso, oro e mirra, portano i dolori e le preoccupazioni del loro popolo a chiedere la salvezza dal l'unico che può dare. Riflessione: “Il regno di Dio non ha davvero bisogno dei nostri beni materiali, ma ci rendiamo conto che Dio, che è l'origine delle nostre colture di caffè, i nostri canali, il nostro cotone, la nostra ricchezza e tutta la ricchezza del mondo, ha il diritto di tutte queste cose. Riflessione: “Il Concilio Vaticano II afferma che ogni persona ha una profondità alla sua / il suo essere, la loro coscienza, che è come una stanza segreta dove Dio scende per parlare con le persone e dove questi individui poi decidere il loro destino. Andiamo giù, come i Magi, nelle profondità del nostro essere e trovare Cristo nei nostri cuori! Cerchiamo di non cercarlo fuori di noi, ma guardiamo per lui dentro di noi. Riflessione: “I Magi  sono le prime persone in una lunga fila processionale e noi, qui riuniti nella cattedrale o nelle nostre comunità in cui stiamo riflettendo insieme su questo messaggio ... continuiamo il processo, siamo i Magi di oggi, il magi del 1980. i Magi di venti secoli fa erano i primi che hanno ricevuto questa conoscenza di Cristo: beato il popolo, Beati i donne e gli uomini che trovano questa rivelazione di Gesù”. —Mons. 2014 was a watershed year for Archbishop Óscar A. Romero and his sainthood cause.  After several years parked on a shoulder of the canonization highway, Romero’s cause is finally on the “fast track” and, this year, officials sought to make up for lost time.  The happy results may not be known until next year but, make no mistake, the heavy lifting was done in 2014.

1.“Positio Super Martyrio” Submitted to Congregation for the Causes of Saints

The biggest story this year happened out of public view, but its significance for Romero’s beatification cause cannot be understated.  It was certainly the most significant thing ever reported on this blog.  Late in the year, Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, the postulator of Archbishop Romero’s sainthood cause, formally submitted the “Positio Super Martyrio”—the “Position Paper on the Martyrdom,” a book-length study of Romero's life based on the documentation from the diocesan phase and other sources, which contains all the information on which the ultimate decision will be made.  This is truly the point where we can actually say “case closed;” nothing further to be added or detracted.  Decision looms.   [MORE]

2. Pope Francis Comments on the Cause

Pope Francis is believed to be a tremendous supporter of the canonization, quietly prodding the process along behind the scenes.  Although he is considered to be a loquacious Pontiff, the Holy Father has been assiduously mum on Romero—until August when, flying back from Korea, he was asked directly about the cause.  “For me, Romero is a man of God,” said the Pope, putting the kibosh on the old accusations that Romero was an activist.  After the Pope hinted that the postulators should move swiftly, the final papers advancing the cause were submitted within a couple of months (see item #1 above). 3. Salvadoran Church takes the lead

When the acknowledgments are passed out for the successful conclusion of Archbishop Romero’s beatification process, a large portion of the credit should go to the Salvadoran Church.  In August, the Church inaugurated a “Romero Triennium,” counting down the 3 years until the 100th anniversary of Romero’s birth and going public with the goal of having Romero canonized by then.  The church even sent a high ranking delegation of bishops to ask Pope Francis for his blessing.  To think that there was a time when only one man in the bishops’ conference was friendly to Romero!  [MORE]

4. Salvadoran government does its part

For years, the obstacle for Abp. Romero’s beatification was the perception in the Church that Romero had been hijacked by the Left.  Keenly aware of that concern, the leftist ruling party in El Salvador has walked a fine line under Pres. Salvador Sánchez Cerén, a former guerrilla, providing solid support for the beatification process but avoiding provocative statements or gloating.  For its part, the opposition has also been largely cooperative, offering muted support for the cause (but see item #9 below).  [MORE]

5. San Salvador Airport named after Abp. Romero

A reflection of the kind of year Romero had in 2014 is that we rank the naming of his country’s international airport after him as our #5 story.  A couple of years ago, not only would this have been the top story, but several of the other stories in our top ten would be the supporting narrative.  In addition to the airport, the great hall of the presidential palace was named after Romero.  Add the street abutting the Cathedral and a new modern traffic artery also named after Romero and it is clear that this martyr has left a giant-sized mark on his diminutive country.  [MORE]

6. False starts

Expectation regarding the anticipated beatification of Archbishop Romero was so high in 2014 that, not once but twice, a false announcement was prematurely circulated in the international press.  The first time, “fevered speculation” was triggered when the Auxiliary Bishop of San Salvador commented that the Archbishop had major news to report.  That announcement turned out to be simply a recap of a meeting with the Pope about Romero (see item #3)—big news to be sure, but not the major announcement many had expected.  More recently, a famous Liberation Theologian was responsible for another misfire.  Let’s hope the third time’s the charm!  [MORE]

7. Fr. Rutilio Grande’s Canonization Cause

No doubt the commencement of the beatification process for Fr. Rutilio Grande, whose 1977 assassination first put Abp. Romero on a collision course with the Salvadoran government, would be immensely satisfying to Romero.  But Fr. Grande’s cause is also important to Romero’s eventual canonization, as Fr. Grande was a Jesuit along the lines of Pope Francis—more about popular piety and embedding himself in the periphery than about ideological manifestos from academia.  Not surprisingly, Francis appears to be thoroughly familiar with Fr. 8. Liberation rapprochement

Although not limited strictly to 2014, a story that’s been brewing for the last two years is the sense that reconciliation is coming to the sometimes tense and testy relationship between the Vatican and the Liberation Theology current in Latin America.  In February, the “Father of Liberation Theology,” Fr. Gustavo Gutiérrez received a warm welcome in the Vatican, and Leonardo Boff, another leading figure in the movement, was reportedly contacted by Pope Francis.  Although not directly involving Romero, these stories signal a friendlier climate with respect to the Church’s role in Latin America.  [MORE]

9. San Salvador names street for d’Aubuisson

The one hiccup on El Salvador’s official support for the beatification cause came late in the year, when the Mayor of San Salvador, still reeling from a failed bid to capture the country’s presidency, announced that he was renaming a major street in San Salvador after Roberto d’Aubuisson, the man who ordered Abp. Romero’s assassination.  This is a story in progress and it is hard to say where it will go.  Possibilities include: (1) support for Romero defeats the move; (2) rightwing plan moves forward, becomes thorn in the side of beatification and possible papal visit; (3) the affair triggers dialogue and progress toward reconciliation.  One can only hope!  [MORE]

10. A Romero statue in Rome

The Romero Foundation is funding the erection of an Abp. Romero statue in “Giardino El Salvador” (El Salvador Gardens) in the EUR district of Rome.  The monument could help gain Romero a prominent place among modern saints if his statue near the center of the Church’s “headquarters” attracts a following among Romans and visitors to the Eternal City.  Romero already has statues in several cities, including London (at Westminster Abbey, no less), Los Angeles and, of course, San Salvador.  [MORE]

2014 fue un año decisivo para Mons. Óscar A. Romero y su causa de santidad. Después de varios años estacionada en un arcén de la carretera de la canonización, la causa de Romero está finalmente en la “vía rápida” y, este año, los funcionarios trataron de recuperar el tiempo perdido. Los resultados felices talvez no se conozcan hasta el próximo año, pero, no nos engañemos, el trabajo pesado se hizo en 2014.

1. El “Positio super martyrio” es entregado a la Congregación para las Causas de los Santos

La noticia más importante de año sucedió fuera de la vista pública, pero su importancia para la causa de beatificación de Romero no puede ser subestimada. Fue sin duda lo más importante que se ha reportado en este blog. A finales del año, el arzobispo Vincenzo Paglia, el postulador de la causa de santidad de monseñor Romero, presentó formalmente la “Positio super martyrio”, un estudio de extensión de libro sobre la vida de Romero elaborado a base de la documentación de la fase diocesana y otras fuentes, que contiene toda la información en que se tomará la decisión final. Este es realmente el punto en que en realidad podemos decir “caso cerrado”; no hay nada más que agregar ni restar. Solo queda el juicio final.  [MÁS]

2. Francisco comenta la Causa

Se cree que el Papa Francisco es un gran impulsador de la canonización, empujando discretamente el proceso detrás de las escenas. A pesar de que se considera que es un Pontífice locuaz, el Santo Padre ha sido asiduamente callado sobre Romero hasta en agosto cuando, volando de regreso de Corea, se le preguntó directamente sobre la causa. “Para mí, Romero es un hombre de Dios”, dijo el Papa, poniendo fin a las viejas acusaciones de que Romero era un activista. Después de que el Papa dio a entender que los postuladores deberían tomar prisa, el papeleo final que avanza la causa fue presentado dentro de un par de meses (véase el punto anterior # 1).  [MÁS]

3. Iglesia salvadoreña toma la delantera

Cuando se entreguen los reconocimientos por la conclusión exitosa del proceso de beatificación de monseñor Romero, una gran parte del crédito debe ir a la Iglesia salvadoreña. En agosto, la Iglesia inauguró un “Trienio Romero”, contando los 3 años hasta el 100 aniversario del nacimiento de Romero y dejo saber su objetivo de tener a Romero canonizado para entonces. La iglesia incluso envió una delegación de alto nivel de obispos a pedir la bendición del Papa Francisco.  ¡Y pensar que hubo un tiempo en que sólo uno de la conferencia episcopal tenía apertura para con Romero!  [MÁS]

4. Gobierno salvadoreño hace su parte

Por muchos años, el obstáculo para la beatificación de Mons. Romero era la percepción de la Iglesia que Romero había sido secuestrado por la Izquierda. Plenamente consciente esa inquietud, el partido gobernante de izquierda en El Salvador ha caminado una línea muy fina bajo el Pdte. Salvador Sánchez Cerén, un ex guerrillero, proporcionando un sólido apoyo para el proceso de beatificación, pero evitando declaraciones provocativas o regodeo. Por su parte, la oposición también ha dado en gran parte su cooperación, ofreciendo un apoyo medio mudo a la causa (pero véase el punto # 9 abajo).  [MÁS]

5. Aeropuerto de San Salvador nombrado por Mons. Romero

Un reflejo del tipo de año que Mons. Romero tuvo en el 2014 es que hemos colocado la denominación del aeropuerto internacional de su país en su nombre en la posición # 5 de esta lista. Hace un par de años, no sólo esto habría sido la historia principal, sino que varias de las otras historias en nuestro top 10 serían notas relacionadas. Además del aeropuerto, el salón de honor de la casa presidencial fue nombrado en homenaje a Romero. También la calle contigua a la Catedral y una nueva arteria moderna de tráfico lleva el nombre de Romero, dejando claro que este mártir ha imprimido una marca de tamaño gigante en su diminuto país.  [MÁS]

6. Inicios falsos

Las expectativas por la beatificación de Monseñor Romero eran tan altas en 2014 que, no una sino dos veces, un falso anuncio se distribuyó de forma prematura en la prensa internacional. La primera vez, una especulación febril se disparó cuando el obispo auxiliar de San Salvador comentó que el Arzobispo tenía una noticia importante que informar. Ese anuncio resultó ser simplemente un resumen de una reunión con el Papa sobre Romero (ver punto # 3)—sin duda una grande noticia, pero no el anuncio que muchos habrían esperado. Más recientemente, un famoso teólogo de la liberación fue responsable de otro disparo perdido. ¡Esperemos que la tercera sea la vencida!  [MÁS]

7. Causa de canonización P. Rutilio Grande

Sin duda, el inicio del proceso de beatificación del padre Rutilio Grande, cuyo asesinato en 1.977 puso a Mons. Romero en curso de colisión con el gobierno salvadoreño, sería de gran satisfacción para Romero. Pero la Causa del P. Grande también es importante para la eventual canonización de Romero, ya que el P. Grande era un jesuita en la línea del Papa Francisco—más extendido a la piedad popular y la encarnación en la periferia y no de hacer manifiestos ideológicos desde el mundo académico. No es de extrañar, que Francisco parece estar completamente familiarizado con el caso del P. Grande.  [MÁS]

8. Acercamiento Liberación

Aunque no se limita estrictamente al 2014, una historia que se ha estado desarrollando durante los últimos dos años es la idea de que la reconciliación está llegando a la relación a veces tensa y irritable entre el Vaticano y la corriente de la Teología de la Liberación en América Latina. En febrero, el “Padre de la Teología de la Liberación”, el P. Gustavo Gutiérrez recibió una cálida bienvenida en el Vaticano, y se dice que Leonardo Boff, otra figura destacada en el movimiento, fue contactado por el propio Francisco. Aunque no implique directamente a Romero, estas historias señalan un clima más amigable con respecto al papel de la Iglesia en América Latina.  [MÁS]

9. San Salvador nombra calle por d'Aubuisson

El único tropiezo en el apoyo oficial de El Salvador a la causa de beatificación llegó a finales de año, cuando el alcalde de San Salvador, todavía aturdido por un fallido intento por capturar la presidencia del país, anunció que iba a renombrar una calle principal en San Salvador en honor a Roberto d'Aubuisson, el hombre que ordenó el asesinato de Mons. Romero. Esta es una historia en curso y es difícil decir dónde irá. Las posibilidades incluyen: (1) el apoyo a Romero derrota este movimiento; (2) el plan de la derecha sigue adelante, se convierte en piedra en el zapato de la beatificación y la posible visita del Papa; (3) el asunto desencadena el diálogo y el progreso hacia la reconciliación. ¡Sólo se puede esperar!  [MÁS]

10. Estatua de Romero en Roma

La Fundación Romero está financiando la construcción de una Estatua Mons. Romero en “Giardino El Salvador” (Jardín de El Salvador) en el distrito EUR de Roma. El monumento podría ayudar a ganar para Romero un lugar destacado entre los santos modernos si su estatua cerca del centro de la “sede” de la Iglesia atrae a los romanos y visitantes de la Ciudad Eterna. Romero ya tiene estatuas en varias ciudades, incluyendo Londres (en la Abadía de Westminster, nada menos), Los Ángeles y, por supuesto, de San Salvador.  [MÁS]

Mientras tanto, este blog completó su octavo año publicando acerca de la causa de beatificación del cuarto Arzobispo de San Salvador.
