As we approach the beatification of Archbishop Romero on the weekend of Pentecost, we offer the Novena to the Holy Spirit of St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori. Let us pray that the Holy Spirit will continue to accompany the Church, as it did during the Second Vatican Council and in meetings of the Latin American Bishops in from Medellin to Aparecida. We also remember the 40th anniversary of the first pastoral letter of Archbishop Romero, “The Holy Spirit in the Church”, this Monday 18 May.

Friday, May 15 - DAY 1: We pray for the gift of fear of God

Novena prayer: “Divine Consoler, I adore You as my true God, with God the Father and God the Son. I adore You and unite myself to the adoration You receive from the angels and saints. I give You my heart and I offer my ardent thanksgiving for all the grace which You never cease to bestow on me. O Giver of all supernatural gifts, who filled the soul of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with such immense favors, I beg You to visit me with Your grace and Your love and to grant me the gift of holy fear, so that it may act on me as a check to prevent me from falling back into my past sins, for which I beg pardon.”

Reflection: “Mary is the tenderness that is anxiously seeking for a solution.  Mary is in the midst of our country that at times appears like a dead end street, hoping that God will come to save us.  Hopefully we will imitate this Poor Servant of Yahweh and experience the fact that without God we can do nothing because God is the hope of our people and only Jesus Christ, the Divine Savior, can be the Saviour of our nation.”  —Archbishop Romero, December 24, 1978

Saturday, May 16 - DAY 2: We pray for the gift of piety

 

Novena prayer: “Divine Consoler, I adore You as my true God, with God the Father and God the Son. I adore You and unite myself to the adoration You receive from the angels and saints. I give You my heart and I offer my ardent thanksgiving for all the grace which You never cease to bestow on me. O Giver of all supernatural gifts, who filled the soul of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with such immense favors, I beg You to visit me with Your grace and Your love and to grant me the gift of piety, so that I may serve You for the future with increased ervor, follow with more promptness Your holy inspirations, and observe your divine precepts with greater fidelity.”

Reflection: “How can we, as men and women, live without praying?  How can a person spend a whole life without thinking of God?  How can a person leave empty that capacity for the divine and never fill it?”  —Archbishop Romero, August 13, 1978

Sunday, May 17 - Day 3: We pray for the gift of knowledge

I give You my heart and I offer my ardent thanksgiving for all the grace which You never cease to bestow on me. O Giver of all supernatural gifts, who filled the soul of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with such immense favors, I beg You to visit me with Your grace and Your love and to grant me the gift of knowledge, so that I may know the things of God and, enlightened by Your holy teaching, may walk, without deviation, in the path of eternal salvation.”

Monday May 18 - Day 4: We pray for the gift of strength

 

Novena prayer: “Divine Consoler, I adore You as my true God, with God the Father and God the Son. I adore You and unite myself to the adoration You receive from the angels and saints. I give You my heart and I offer my ardent thanksgiving for all the grace which You never cease to bestow on me. O Giver of all supernatural gifts, who filled the soul of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with such immense favors, I beg You to visit me with Your grace and Your love and to grant me the gift of fortitude, so that I may overcome courageously all the assaults of the devil, and all the dangers of this world which threaten the salvation of my soul.”

Reflection: “If our Archdiocese has become a diocese of conflict then there should be no doubt that this has occurred because of the desire of our diocese to be faithful to the new evangelization.  As a result of the Second Vatican Council and the meetings of the Latin American bishops, we are being invited to carry out a fearless process of evangelization that leads us to make a commitment.”  —Archbishop Romero, March 11, 1979

Tuesday, May 19 - Day 5: We pray for the gift of counsel

 

Novena prayer: “Divine Consoler, I adore You as my true God, with God the Father and God the Son. I adore You and unite myself to the adoration You receive from the angels and saints. I give You my heart and I offer my ardent thanksgiving for all the grace which You never cease to bestow on me. O Giver of all supernatural gifts, who filled the soul of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with such immense favors, I beg You to visit me with Your grace and Your love and to grant me the gift of counsel, so that I may choose what is more conducive to my spiritual advancement and may discover the wiles and snares of the tempter.”

Reflection: “The preacher not only teaches, but learns.  You teach me.  Your attention is also for me the Holy Spirit’s inspiration.  Your rejection would be for me God’s rejection ...  Thanks to God, the Church in El Salvador can speak and we pray that this voice of the Church can continue to speak out.  When the Church speaks, she must proclaim the truth, otherwise it would be better for her to remain silent.”  —Archbishop Romero, July 16, 1978

Wednesday, May 20 - Day 6: We pray for the gift of intelligence

 

Novena prayer: “Divine Consoler, I adore You as my true God, with God the Father and God the Son. I adore You and unite myself to the adoration You receive from the angels and saints. I give You my heart and I offer my ardent thanksgiving for all the grace which You never cease to bestow on me. O Giver of all supernatural gifts, who filled the soul of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with such immense favors, I beg You to visit me with Your grace and Your love and to grant me the gift of understanding, so that I may apprehend the divine mysteries and by contemplation of heavenly things detach my thoughts and affections from the vain things of this miserable world.”

Thursday May 21 - Day 7: Let us pray for the gift of wisdom

 

Novena prayer: “Divine Consoler, I adore You as my true God, with God the Father and God the Son. I adore You and unite myself to the adoration You receive from the angels and saints. I give You my heart and I offer my ardent thanksgiving for all the grace which You never cease to bestow on me. O Giver of all supernatural gifts, who filled the soul of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with such immense favors, I beg You to visit me with Your grace and Your love and to grant me the gift of wisdom, so that I may rightly direct all my actions, referring them to God as my last end; so that, having loved Him and served Him in this life, I may have the happiness of possessing Him eternally in the next.”

Reflection: “All those longings for justice, peace, and well-being that we experience on earth become realized for us if we enlighten them with Christian hope.  We know that no one can go on forever, but those who have put into their work a sense of very great faith, of love of God, of hope among human beings, find it all results in the splendors of a crown that is the sure reward of those who labor thus, cultivating truth, justice, love, and goodness on earth.  Such labor does not remain here below but, purified by God’s Spirit, is harvested for our reward.”  —Archbishop Romero, March 24, 1980

Friday, May 22 - Day 8: Humble petition

 

Novena prayer: “Most Holy Spirit, the Paraclete, Father of the poor, Consoler of the afflicted. Light of hearts, and Sanctifier of souls, look upon us who lie prostrate in Thy presence, adoring Thee with the profoundest worship. A thousand times we bless Thee, and with the seraphim before Thy throne we cry Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus! We firmly believe that Thou art eternal God, consubstantial with the Farther and the Son. We hope in Thy goodness, to save and sanctify our souls. We love Thee, O divine love, with all our affections, and above all created things; for Thou art infinite goodness, and alone worthy of all love. How ungrateful have we been towards Thee! how deaf to Thy holy inspirations! how often have we offended Thee by actual sins! O blessed Spirit, we beg pardon of Thee with tears in our eyes, and it is our greatest unhappiness to think that we have ever offended Thee, our chief good.”

Reflection: “What beautiful coffee groves, what fine wheat, sugar cane and cotton fields, what farms, what lands God has given us!  Nature is so beautiful!  But we see it groan under oppression, under wickedness, under injustice, under abuse, and the Church experiences its pain.  Nature looks for a liberation that will not be mere material well-being but God’s act of power.  God will free nature from sinful human hands, and along with the redeemed it will sing a hymn of joy to God the Liberator.”  —Archbishop Romero, December 11, 1977

Saturday, May 23 - Day 9: Offer and invocation

 

Novena prayer: “I offer you my heart as cold as it is, and I beg you to let you a ray of your light and a spark of your fire enter it, so as to melt the ice of its iniquities. You are a divine spirit, strengthen me against the evil spirits; you are a fire, enlighten me with the fire of love; you are a light, let me know what is eternal; you are a dove, grant me the habits of purity; You are a breath of sweetness, dissipate the storms that raise passions in me; you are a language, teach me the way of relentless praise; you're a cloud, cover me with the shadow of your protection. Author of all heavenly gifts! I beg you, give me life by your grace, sanctify me with your love, and govern me with your wisdom, Adopt me as your child and save me with your infinite mercy, that I never cease to bless, to praise you and to love you, throughout my life on earth and later in Heaven for all eternity.”

Reflection: “The Church has no desire to make denunciations.  I, more than anyone else, experience a repugnance for having to speak these things --- but I believe that it is my duty to do this, my duty to speak the truth.  Thus we must keep our eyes wide open, our feet firmly planted on the earth and our hearts filled with the gospel and God.”  —Archbishop Romero, August 27, 1978

Acercándonos a la beatificación de Monseñor Romero en el fin de semana de Pentecostés, ofrecemos la Novena al Espíritu Santo de San Alfonso María de Ligorio.  Oremos para que el Espíritu Santo siga acompañando a la Iglesia, como lo hizo durante el Concilio Vaticano II y en las reuniones de los obispos latinoamericanos desde Medellín a Aparecida.  También recordamos el 40 aniversario de la primera carta pastoral de Monseñor Romero, “El Espíritu Santo en la Iglesia”, este lunes 18 de mayo.

Viernes, 15 de mayo - DÍA 1: Oramos por el don del temor de Dios

Oración de la Novena: “Divino Consolador, te adoro como mi verdadero Dios, con Dios el Padre y Dios el Hijo.  Te adoro y me uno a la adoración que recibes de los ángeles y los santos.  Te doy mi corazón y yo ofrezco mi agradecimiento ardiente por toda la gracia que Nunca dejas de otorgar sobre mí.  Tu que das todos los dones sobrenaturales, que llenaron el alma de la Santísima Virgen María, Madre de Dios, con tal inmenso favor, Te ruego que me visites con su gracia y tu amor y me concedas el don del santo temor, de modo que podrá actuar en mí como un control para evitar que caiga de nuevo en mis pecados pasados, por los cuales pido perdón”.

Reflexión: “María es la ternura que busca angustiada una solución. María está en nuestra patria como en un callejón sin salida pero esperando que Dios ha de venir a salvarnos. Oración de la Novena: “Divino Consolador, te adoro como mi verdadero Dios, con Dios el Padre y Dios el Hijo.  Te adoro y me uno a la adoración que recibes de los ángeles y los santos.  Te doy mi corazón y yo ofrezco mi agradecimiento ardiente por toda la gracia que Nunca dejas de otorgar sobre mí.  Tu que das todos los dones sobrenaturales, que llenaron el alma de la Santísima Virgen María, Madre de Dios, con tal inmenso favor, Te ruego que me visites con su gracia y tu amor y me concedas el don de la piedad, de modo que Te pueda servir en el futuro con fervor incrementado, seguir con más rapidez Tus santas inspiraciones, y observar con mayor fidelidad Tus preceptos divinos”.

Oración de la Novena: “Divino Consolador, te adoro como mi verdadero Dios, con Dios el Padre y Dios el Hijo.  Te adoro y me uno a la adoración que recibes de los ángeles y los santos.  Te doy mi corazón y yo ofrezco mi agradecimiento ardiente por toda la gracia que Nunca dejas de otorgar sobre mí.  Tu que das todos los dones sobrenaturales, que llenaron el alma de la Santísima Virgen María, Madre de Dios, con tal inmenso favor, Te ruego que me visites con su gracia y tu amor y me concedas el don del conocimiento, para que yo conozca las cosas de Dios y, iluminado por Tus santas enseñanzas, pueda caminar, sin desviación, en el camino de la salvación eterna.”

Lunes 18 de mayo - DÍA 4: orar por el don de la fortaleza

Oración de la Novena: “Divino Consolador, te adoro como mi verdadero Dios, con Dios el Padre y Dios el Hijo.  Te adoro y me uno a la adoración que recibes de los ángeles y los santos.  Te doy mi corazón y yo ofrezco mi agradecimiento ardiente por toda la gracia que Nunca dejas de otorgar sobre mí.  Tu que das todos los dones sobrenaturales, que llenaron el alma de la Santísima Virgen María, Madre de Dios, con tal inmenso favor, Te ruego que me visites con su gracia y tu amor y me concedas el don de la fortaleza, para que yo pueda superar con valentía todos los asaltos del diablo, y todos los peligros de este mundo que amenazan la salvación de mi alma”.

Reflexión: “Si nuestra Arquidiócesis se ha convertido en una diócesis conflictiva, no les quepa duda, es por su deseo de fidelidad a esta evangelización nueva; que del Concilio Vaticano II para acá y en las reuniones de Obispos latinoamericanos están exigiendo que tiene que ser una evangelización muy comprometida, sin miedo”.     - Monseñor Romero, 11 de marzo 1979

Martes, 19 de mayo - DÍA 5: Oramos por el don del consejo

Oración de la Novena: “Divino Consolador, te adoro como mi verdadero Dios, con Dios el Padre y Dios el Hijo.  Te adoro y me uno a la adoración que recibes de los ángeles y los santos.  Te doy mi corazón y yo ofrezco mi agradecimiento ardiente por toda la gracia que Nunca dejas de otorgar sobre mí.  Tu que das todos los dones sobrenaturales, que llenaron el alma de la Santísima Virgen María, Madre de Dios, con tal inmenso favor, Te ruego que me visites con su gracia y tu amor y me concedas el don del consejo, para que yo pueda elegir lo que es más propicio para mi avance espiritual y pueda descubrir las artimañas y trampas del tentador”.

Reflexión: “No sólo el predicador enseña, el predicador aprende, ustedes me enseñan. La atención de ustedes es para mí también inspiración del Espíritu Santo; el rechazo de ustedes sería para mi también rechazo de Dios ...  Gracias a Dios que en la Iglesia en El Salvador, todavía puede hablar, pero que no se trate de apagar esta voz; porque si habla, tiene que decir la verdad, y si no, mejor no hablar”.     - Monseñor Romero, 16 de julio 1978

Miércoles 20 de Mayo - DÍA 6: Oramos por el don de la inteligencia

Oración de la Novena: “Divino Consolador, te adoro como mi verdadero Dios, con Dios el Padre y Dios el Hijo.  Te adoro y me uno a la adoración que recibes de los ángeles y los santos.  Te doy mi corazón y yo ofrezco mi agradecimiento ardiente por toda la gracia que Nunca dejas de otorgar sobre mí.  Tu que das todos los dones sobrenaturales, que llenaron el alma de la Santísima Virgen María, Madre de Dios, con tal inmenso favor, Te ruego que me visites con su gracia y tu amor y me concedas el don de la inteligencia, para que yo pueda contemplar los misterios divinos y por la apreciación de las cosas celestiales desprenda mis pensamientos y afectos de las vanidades de este mundo miserable”.

Jueves 21 de mayo - DÍA 7: Oremos por el don de la sabiduría

Oración de la Novena: “Divino Consolador, te adoro como mi verdadero Dios, con Dios el Padre y Dios el Hijo.  Te adoro y me uno a la adoración que recibes de los ángeles y los santos.  Te doy mi corazón y yo ofrezco mi agradecimiento ardiente por toda la gracia que Nunca dejas de otorgar sobre mí.  Tu que das todos los dones sobrenaturales, que llenaron el alma de la Santísima Virgen María, Madre de Dios, con tal inmenso favor, Te ruego que me visites con su gracia y tu amor y me concedas el don de la sabiduría, para que yo pueda dirigir acertadamente todas mis acciones, en referencia a Dios como mi último fin;  de manera que, después de haberlo amado y servido en esta vida, pueda tener la dicha de poseerlo eternamente en la próxima”.

Reflexión: “Todos esos anhelos de justicia, de paz y de bien que tenemos ya en esta tierra, los tenemos formados si los iluminamos de una esperanza cristiana porque sabemos que nadie puede para siempre y que aquellos que han puesto en su trabajo un sentimiento de fe muy grande, de amor a Dios, de esperanza entre los hombres, pues todo esto está redundando ahora, en esplendores de una corona que ha de ser la recompensa de todos los que trabajan así, regando verdades, justicia, amor, bondades en la tierra y no se queda aquí, sino que purificado por el espíritu de Dios, se nos recoge y se nos da en recompensa”.     - Monseñor Romero, 24 de marzo 1980

Viernes, 22 de mayo - DÍA 8: petición Humilde

Oración de la Novena: “Santísimo Espíritu Santo, Paráclito, padre de los pobres, Consolador de los afligidos.  Luz de los corazones, y Santificador de las almas, míranos a nosotros, postrados ante Tu presencia, adorándote a Ti con la adoración más profunda.  Mil veces Te bendecimos, junto a los serafines ante tu trono que cantan ‘Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus!’ Creemos firmemente que Tú eres Dios eterno, consustancial con el Padre y el Hijo.  Esperamos en tu bondad, para que salves y santifiques nuestras almas.  Te amamos, oh amor divino, con todos nuestros afectos, y por encima de todas las cosas creadas;  Tú eres bondad infinita, y solo Tu eres digno de todo amor.  ¡Qué ingratos hemos sido hacia Ti!  ¡Qué sordos a Tus santas inspiraciones!  ¡Cuántas veces te hemos ofendido con nuestros pecados verdaderos!  O bendito Espíritu, suplicamos Tu perdón con lágrimas en los ojos, y es nuestra mayor tristeza pensar que Te hemos ofendido a Ti, el Bien Mayor que tenemos”.

Reflexión: “¡Qué hermosos cafetales, qué bellos cañales, qué lindas algodoneras, qué fincas, qué tierras, las que Dios nos ha dado! ¡Qué naturaleza más bella! Pero cuando la vemos gemir bajo la opresión, bajo la iniquidad, bajo la injusticia, bajo el atropello, entonces, duele a la Iglesia y espera una liberación que no sea sólo el bienestar material, sino que sea el poder de un Dios que librará de las manos pecadoras de los hombres una naturaleza que junto con los hombres redimidos va a cantar la felicidad en el Dios liberador”.     - Monseñor Romero, 11 de diciembre 1977

Oración de la Novena: “Te ofrezco mi corazón, frío como es, y te ruego que dejes entrar en el un rayo de Tu luz y una chispa de Tu fuego, a fin de derretir el hielo de sus iniquidades.  Tu eres un espíritu divino, fortaléceme contra los malos espíritus;  Tu eres un fuego, ilumíname con el fuego del amor;  Tu eres una luz, hazme saber lo que es eterno;  Tu eres una paloma, concédeme los hábitos de la pureza;  Tu eres un soplo de dulzura, disipa las tormentas que levantan mis pasiones;  Tu eres un lenguaje, enséñame el camino de alabanza incesante;  Tu eres una nube, cúbreme con la sombra de su protección.  ¡Autor de todos los dones celestiales!  Te ruego, que me des la vida por Tu gracia, me santifico con Tu amor, y me gobierno con Tu sabiduría, adóptame como Tu creatura y sálvame con su misericordia infinita, que nunca deje de bendecirte, de alabarte y amarte, a lo largo de mi vida en la tierra y más tarde en el cielo por toda la eternidad”.

Reflexión: “La Iglesia no tiene un afán, una pretensión de estar aquí sólo hablando por denunciar. ¡Yo soy el que siento más que todos los repugnancia de estar diciendo estas cosas,- pero siento que es mi deber, que no es una espectacularidad sino que simplemente una verdad! Y la verdad es la que tenemos que ver con los ojos bien abiertos y los pies bien puestos en la tierra., pero el corazón bien lleno de evangelio y -de Dios”.     - Monseñor Romero, 27 de agosto 1978

Novena allo Spirito Santo

Ora che ci avviciniamo alla beatificazione di monsignor Romero nel fine settimana di Pentecoste, offriamo la Novena allo Spirito Santo di sant’Alfonso Maria de’ Liguori.  Preghiamo che lo Spirito Santo continuerà ad accompagnare la Chiesa, come ha fatto al Concilio Vaticano II e in occasione delle riunioni del Vescovi latinoamericani da Medellin ad Aparecida. Ricordiamo anche il 40 ° anniversario della prima lettera pastorale di Mons. Romero, “Lo Spirito Santo nella Chiesa”, questo Lunedi 18 maggio.

Venerdì 15 maggio — 1° GIORNO: Preghiamo per il dono del timore di Dio

Preghiera della Novena: “Spirito Santo, divino consolatore! Io ti adoro come mio vero Dio, come Dio Padre e Dio Figlio.  Io ti offro il mio cuore e ti rendo atti di grazia per tutti i benefici che hai riversato e che riversi ancora senza sosta sul mondo. Tu che sei l’Autore di tutti i doni soprannaturali e che hai riempito d’immenso piacere l’anima della Beata Madre di Dio e di tue le consolazioni, Maria, io ti prego di visitarmi per la tua grazia e di accordarmi il dono del tuo santo timore, affinché mi serva da freno per non cadere mai più nei miei errori passati, per i quali chiedo mille volte perdono.”

Riflessione: “Maria è la tenerezza che cerca afflitta una soluzione. Maria sta nella nostra patria come in un vicolo cieco, ma aspettando che Dio venga a salvarci. Imitiamo questa povera di Jahweh e sentiremo che senza Dio non possiamo nulla, che Dio è la speranza del nostro popolo, che solo Cristo, il Divino Salvatore, può essere il salvatore della nostra patria”. —Mons. Preghiera della Novena: “Io ti offro il mio cuore tutto freddo com’è, e ti supplico di farvi entrare un raggio della tua luce e una scintilla del tuo fuoco, così da fondere il ghiaccio tanto duro delle sue iniquità. Tu sei uno Spirito divino, fortificami contro gli spiriti malvagi; tu sei un fuoco, illuminami col fuoco dell’amore; tu sei una luce, fammi conoscere le cose eterne; tu sei una colomba, donami delle abitudini pure; tu sei un soffio pieno di dolcezza, dissipa i temporali che sollevano in me le passioni; tu sei una lingua, insegnami la maniera di lodarti senza sosta; tu sei una nuvola, coprimi con l’ombra della tua protezione. Autore di tutti i doni celesti! Romero beatification update #17

The wait was long but, today, there are only nine days left in the history of the universe during which we will refer to Oscar Romero simply as “Archbishop Romero.”  It will be “Blessed Oscar Romero” after May 23 and that date is so close that workers have started to put up the dais that will be used for the beatification ceremony (photo).  The choir that will sing during their ceremony is in their final rehearsals and the finishing touches are being put on all the plans for the event.

The objective of this post is simple: to help you pick the best spot to watch the ceremony from if you will be in San Salvador for the beatification.  There will be large crowds.  We don’t know exactly how many people will show up, but the size of the theater of action will be larger than New York City’s Central Park.  That is the size of the area that will be closed off to traffic, though the crowds will be concentrated mainly on Alameda Roosevelt, which runs west from Downtown San Salvador to the Divine Savior Plaza where the beatification will take place, and on Paseo General Escalon which runs further west from Divine Savior to a roundabout called Redondel Masferrer.  There are also two offshoots north and south from Divine Savior Plaza, making the figure of a large, sideways cross.  Throughout this expanse, you can watch the ceremony on large television screens and Eucharistic stations will be available as well.

What are the choice spots?  I personally am liking the part of the scheme that organizers are calling “Sector K.”  [Maps.]  This is the eastern-most end of the west-to-east transverse, where Alameda Roosevelt is bounded by Rosales Hospital on the north and Cuscatlan Park on the south.  The organizers have labeled the various spaces based on how crowded they will be: red is the most crowded, orange less so, yellow less crowded, and green is the most sparse.  Sector K is rated yellow.  I also like it because it’s by Cuscatlan Park, which can provide a cool, shady spot in a pinch.  Plus, you can check out the Monument to Memory and Truth, with its Vietnam Wall-like listing of civil war victims (including Archbishop Romero).  If you or someone you are traveling with is disabled, there will be special facilities provided at Magico Gonzalez stadium, which is in Sector J, which is immediately west of Sector K.  Being at the edge closest to downtown, this may also be the easiest place to get in and out of the event zone from.

What—you’re feeling more adventurous?  Then, by all means, head to the place they are calling “Ground Zero”—the Divine Savior Plaza and environs.  If you are lucky enough to have an invitation, because you are a member of the clergy or a head of state, a member of the communities selected to represent those Romero cared about, a member of the press or of a registered foreign delegation, then you will be lucky enough to be among the 6,000 or so who will be placed on the monument’s grounds (“Sector A”).  Good luck getting in and out of the area during the ceremony, which runs from about 7 am to 1 pm!  If you don’t have a VIP invite, you can still muscle your way into the surrounding streets, where over 60,000 souls will be tightly packed around the square (“Sector F”).  A better option might be the northern and southern offshoots from the Plaza (“Sectors E and G”).  I personally like Sector G (to the North) because it has access to San Jose de la Montana Seminary, where all the priests will go, and to the Divine Providence Hospital where Archbishop Romero lived and died, further afield.

A final assumption: you’re not really all that interested in the Church’s massive Romero fest, but you want to say you were there for the historic event.  You just want to check it out.  In that case, “Sector B” might be for you.  This is the western-most run of Paseo General Escalon, heading up towards the San Salvador volcano.  This is the only part of the grid that organizers have labeled in green with respect to crowding—it will be pretty sparse.  You will be behind the beatification ceremony (the altar will be facing east), but you can still watch on the giant television screens found here, as well.  When it comes time to go, or if you decide to check out early, it should not be difficult to get out from this way, but you will be further from everything.

Final tips, check out the maps, and pick your spot now.  (Detailed diagrams are also found on the Beatification’s Flickr photostream.)  It may be difficult to find assistance on the appointed day.  Businesses will be closed, as San Salvador residents will have a paid day off on Friday and Saturday; while all Salvadorans will be off from work on Saturday, the day of the event.

La espera ha sido larga, pero, hoy por hoy, faltan sólo nueve días para que termine la parte de la historia del universo en que nos referimos a Oscar Romero simplemente como “Monseñor Romero”. Va a ser “Beato Oscar Romero” después del 23 de mayo y esa fecha está tan cerca que los trabajadores han comenzado a erigir el templete que se utilizará para la ceremonia de beatificación (foto). El coro que cantará durante la ceremonia está en sus ensayos finales y los toques finales también se están dando a todos los planes para el evento.

El objetivo de esta nota es sencillo: ayudarle a elegir el mejor lugar para ver la ceremonia si va a estar en San Salvador para la beatificación. Habrá grandes gentíos. No sabemos exactamente cuántas personas llegarán, pero el tamaño del teatro de la acción será más grande que el Central Park de Nueva York. Ese es el tamaño de la zona que será cerrada al tráfico vehicular, aunque las multitudes se concentrarán principalmente en la Alameda Roosevelt, que se extiende al oeste desde el centro de San Salvador hacia la Plaza Divino Salvador del Mundo, donde la beatificación tendrá lugar, y sobre el Paseo General Escalón que se extiende más al oeste del Divino Salvador al Redondel Masferrer. También hay dos vástagos norte y sur desde la Plaza Divino Salvador, haciendo la figura de una gran cruz de lado. A lo largo de esta extensión, se podrá ver la ceremonia en grandes pantallas y habrá también estaciones de Eucaristía.

¿Cuáles son los mejores locales para situarse? A mí personalmente me está gustando la parte del esquema que los organizadores llaman el “Sector K.” [Mapas.]  Este es el extremo más oriental de la transversal de oeste a este, donde Alameda Roosevelt está limitada por el Hospital Rosales en el norte y el Parque Cuscatlán al sur. Los organizadores han marcado los diferentes espacios en base a lo lleno que estarán: el rojo es el más concurrido, naranja no tanto, amarillo con menos gente, y el verde es el más liviano. El Sector K es amarillo. También me gusta porque está el parque Cuscatlán, que puede proporcionar un lugar fresco y sombreado en un apuro. Además, usted podrá visitar el Monumento a la Memoria ya la Verdad, con su lista estilo Vietnam Wall de las víctimas de la guerra civil (incluyendo Mons. Romero). Si usted o alguien con quien viaja es inválido, habrá facilidades especiales en el estadio Mágico González, localizado en el Sector J, que se encuentra inmediatamente al oeste de Sector K. Estando en el borde más cercano al centro de San Salvador, también puede ser este el más fácil lugar para entrar y salir de la zona del evento.

Un supuesto final: no está realmente tan interesado en la masiva Fiesta Romero de la Iglesia, solo quiere poder decir que estuvo allí para el evento histórico. Sólo quiere dar un vistazo. En ese caso, el “Sector B” podría ser para usted. Está en el tramo más occidental del Paseo General Escalón, en dirección hacia el volcán de San Salvador. Esta es la única parte de la red que los organizadores han marcado en verde con respecto a las muchedumbres—serán bastante escasas. Va a estar detrás de la ceremonia de beatificación (el altar estará viendo hacia el este), pero todavía se puede ver en las pantallas gigantes que se encuentran aquí, también. Cuando llegue el momento de irse, o si usted decide salir temprano, no debería ser difícil salir de este lado, pero sí estará más retirado.

Consejos finales: deles un vistazo a los mapas, y escoja su lugar con anticipación.  (Diagramas detallados también se encuentran en la galería Flickr por la Beatificación.)  Puede ser difícil encontrar ayuda el día señalado. Las empresas estarán cerradas, y los residentes de San Salvador tendrán un día de asueto el viernes y el sábado; mientras que todos los salvadoreños tendrán asueto el sábado, el día del evento.
